Olavi Paavolainen was a Finnish essayist, journalist, travel book writer, and poet. He often went under the pseudonym of Olavi Lauri. Paavolainen was the central figure of the literary group Tulenkantajat (The Flame Bearers) and one of the most influential literary opinion leaders between the two world wars in Finland. He represented liberal and Europe oriented views of culture and had an eclectic eye for new ideas.

In the late 1920s Paavolainen praised urban life, technology, and roaring cars in his works centering around modernism as the Italian Futurist poet F.T. Marinetti (1876-1944) had done two decades earlier. In the 1930s and 1940s he published a number of works that controversially criticised the members of the Nazi cabinet in Germany and later the Continuation War (1941-44) between Finland and the Soviet Union.

Paavolainen matkustaa pakoon Euroopan henkistä tilannetta vuonna 1937... Etelä-Amerikkaan.

Tavallaan jatkoa "Kolmannen valtakunnan vieraana"-kirjalle. Kannattaa lukea tässä järjestyksessä.

Valitettavasti elämme nykyään minusta hieman samanlaista aikaa kuin 37. Ristiriidat Euroopassa pahenevat.

A travel account and description about a young author traveling on a ship from Finland to Poland to Tenerife to Brazil to Argentina to the jungles of Amazonas. Published in 1937, the has a military undertone of a threat of a new war, at least when the author is in Europe. The South-America episode offers interesting anti-colonial thoughts - I don't know how new at the time - while also using the racial language that was the norm at the time.

The book is written with enchanting vocabulary and poetic depth and at times it almost read like a poem. The haunting e descriptions of the beauties of the oceans and nights skies and stars were enthralling.
