The GRE subject tests are among the most difficult standardized exams. Rather than testing general problem-solving skills, they require highly specialized knowledge.
The experts at The Princeton Review have thoroughly research each subject test to provide students with the most thorough, up-to-date information available. Students don’t need to relearn the entire histories of their fields—just what they need to know to earn high scores on the exams.
Each guide includes one full-length practice exam, complete with comprehensive explanations for every solution.
The Princeton Review is an education services company providing tutoring, test preparation and admission resources for students. It was founded in 1981. and since that time has worked with over 400 million students.
Eh. It's OK. Several ridiculous errors in equations and whatnot that have apparently been known about but not corrected since the first edition. The problems aren't completely like those of the actual tests, but they are OK.
The book is very helpful for those who are preparing to take the GRE Math Subject Test. However, there is some errors in the text, such as typos and insufficient hypotheses in some practice questions.
This books contains some good exercises for the subject test. But finishing only this book is far from enough for a satisfactory score on the exam.
In addition, I need to mention that a lot of the material covered in the differential equations chapter will not be tested on the exam, and I have never seen those problem on real exams and practice exams. So readers should be aware.
Despite the little problem, I still think this is a must-read book for the gre subject test in mathematics.
Don't let the 4-star rating fool you. I did have problems with the book, but I didn't feel they warranted docking the score. Cracking the GRE Math Subject Test is a test preparation textbook prepared by The Princeton Review. The edition I have is the Third Edition. Why did I buy this book, though? I am not taking the GRE, but the mathematics involved interests me.
First, I will list the positives. The book rockets through the material at a breakneck pace. It goes over the subjects smoothly and explains all the concepts and symbols used. There are example problems and workable problems with solutions. I recognize the problems from the level of Calculus I reached. The book forces the material into memorable chunks, making note-taking easy.
The book is not perfect. If other reviewers are to be believed, there are gross errors in the text. I did not read the book that closely and didn't attempt to solve every problem. The book is over twenty years old at the time of writing this review. I don't know if the company that administers the GRE made any changes, but you shouldn't rely on one source of information.
Furthermore, they could use the errors as a point to make you buy new texts or a subscription service to a website containing up-to-date material. My cynicism knows no bounds today.
I enjoyed the book. Thanks for reading my review, and see you next time.
A good and concise review of undergraduate mathematics. Don't expect to have deep concepts explained at any great length - if any of this is new to you, you will need to seek out a real textbook on the subject. But this book is excellent at compiling all the key definitions, formulas, and example problems you will need to study well for the exam. I think :)
This book really helped me preparing for the GRE math subject test. It's well written and concise and helpful, but the sections on abstract algebra and topology need to be strengthened -- I got a problem on topology wrong in the test as a result of this.
Good for a book with practical questions for each type of math question on the Math Subject Test, but the test was very toned down compared to the real thing.
Totally worth it! If you're taking this exam and find yourself stressing over the sheer volume of things you need to study, this book breaks it down into concise sections that you can focus on.
