I like this book more than the Daniel Boone book because he actualy did something worth writing about! =) He was very brave when fighting in Texas and he stood up for what he believed in and was a congressman!
I've always wanted to learn more about Davy. It was sad to learn that he would rather run away from home than face the punishment from his father for skipping school. This book could inspire a lot of discussion about duties of children to parents and how parents should treat children.
A book that is self-explained in the title: David Crockett, from his boyhood full of mischief and wonder to his later struggles as a frontiersman, soldier, and politician.
The early chapters of his childhood flew by, but they were magical. They captured a simpler time of running through woods and meadows, diving into rivers, and joining in celebrations full of food and laughter. Even though these were tumultuous times, the descriptions are so vivid that I could almost feel the warmth of those summer gatherings.
David, of course, doesn’t want school—he wants freedom, music, and adventure. His stubbornness and refusal to do chores made me smile, even as I shook my head at him. Later, when he sets out on cattle drives, the tone shifts. The book really conveys the mix of exhilaration and exhaustion in his travels, along with the deep comfort of stumbling on a fire burning in an abandoned cabin after a long day.
I especially liked the episode where Davy flees from the man trying to keep him in service. He braves a snowstorm, relies on the kindness of passing friends, and somehow manages to keep moving forward. These moments show his resilience, but also how dependent he was on the people he met along the way.
Later on, the book dives into the conflicts between settlers and Native Americans, and eventually Texas’s fight for independence. What struck me most is how Davy always fought for what he believed in, even if his views shifted—first against, then for Native people, and later for Texas itself.
If I have one big complaint, it’s that the side characters aren’t really developed, and the story jumps around a lot in time. I often wished for more intermediate chapters to slow things down and give the story more depth.
Still, it’s a lively and engaging portrait of a man who was stubborn, restless, and determined to live life on his own terms.
It reads a bit choppy but it was still interesting. Davy was a great storyteller, hunter and congressman and known for his coonskin hat. Davy’s motto was “Be always sure you’re right and then go ahead!” He was headstrong at times, and not perfect in his behavior, but was very well liked and respected. Perhaps he should have stayed home more instead of going off to fight or as a congressman. He fought valiantly for freedom and died at the Alamo.
This is the children's version of the history of Davy Crockett and despite being interesting, it is a bit too short and lacks a bit of detail. It is, however, quite entertaining and can be read in a sit (I don't know why it took me so long), so you can get an idea of Crockett's biography.

Really great book highlighting who Davy Crockett was. Be prepared to have conversations with your children about the history of tensions between people groups. Even though some derogatory language was used, it was a great discussion starter with my kids.
I like the way the story and writing style flowed. I initially didn't realize this book was based on a historical figure, and had picked it up thinking it was a short story of an adventurous kid on a journey. A good mix of humor and seriousness.
Nice intro to Crockett. the stories set in his youth are the best, as they give you a nice feel for the time period. As we get further along, the stories get vague and less interesting.
The story of Davy Crockett's life could fall under a folk tale category just as easily as it could a biography or history text. One of the greatest things about the man who was Davy Crockett was that there really was a man who was Davy Crockett! Many legends and tales, often inflated, are told about him. Even in his lifetime, he had to shrug off stories of himself wrestling bears, fighting indian wars, and battling the wild lands.
This book highlights certain aspects of his life. His youth in Tennessee, his congressional service, and the debts he had that led him to Texas and the Alamo are present in this work.
I would like to use this book to study the differences between legends and history. I can imagine starting a lesson by sharing the myths surrounding Davy Crocket, and then have the students read about the real history behind him. I think he is a fascinating character to study and it would be a blast for a grade 3 and up lesson.
This book is a good, informative book for children who can read at about a 3rd grade level. Because it is a children's book, a majority of it describes Davy's childhood and the experiences that shaped his character. The adult portion of his life as told in this book skips around quite a bit, which would make it more difficult for a young reader to follow. I noticed as I read it aloud to my students, they were much less interested in the last half of the book.
Davy was a great man and this was a good way to learn more of him. A hero, indeed. This is another book I read with my son who would give this book a 5 star. And why wouldn't he when Crockett could shoot better than anybody else and stare down a bear.
