Hiç kimse durduk yerde Nil nehrinin geçit vermez bataklıklarına ve nerede olduğunu bilmediği bir "kaynağa" böylesine ölümüne dalmaz. Batı insanı dışında! Bu "merak" duygusunu dikkatlice düşünmek zorundayız.
Ekvator Hikayeleri içinde ilginç bulduğum ilk ayrıntı Zheng He'nin 1405-1433 yılları arasında Hint Okyanusu'na yaptığı büyük seferler sonrası Yongle'nin ölümüyle klasik Çin mantığının dış dünyadan korkması ve 1433'te Çin sefer gemilerini sonsuza kadar limana demirlemesiydi. Çin gemileri çürümeye mahkum edildikten 59 yıl sonra 1492'de Batı, Amerika'yı keşfetti ve 1520'de Macellan sayesinde ilk defa dünyanın çevresini dolanmayı başardı.

A collection of tales mostly about European conquest of equatorial locales in South America, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. I am not convinced of the veracity of most of these stories, especially given the dearth of references cited. However, if you take it just as a bunch of legends, it can be a fairly fun read. Just try to look at it for the adventure, and conveniently ignore the maltreatment of the locals (which is glossed over in the text anyway). You'll enjoy it much more that way.

Another book about geography without maps! I loved the stories in here and the breadth of the world and time that was covered, but maps would have been so wonderful in truly grasping how far some of these travelers went and exactly where. I'm pretty well-informed of the geographies of the Amazon and Congo, and it was still hard without a map in the book.

Kitabı yarım bırakmayı sevmememe rağmen, bu kitabı yarıda bırakmaya karar verdim. Kağıt kalitesi, boyutlar, yazı tipi, çeviri ve anlatım tarzı gibi çeşitli sebeplerden dolayı bazı kitaplara alışamıyorum. Artık ilgimi çekmeyen kitaplara vakit harcamaktan hoşlanmıyorum, bu yüzden kitabı bıraktım ve kütüphaneye iade ettim. Kütüphaneden kitap almanın güzel tarafı da beğenmediğiniz bir kitaba para ödememek.

Aslında yarım bıraktığım bu kitabın konusu ilginçti, ekvator çevresinde gelişen hikayeleri anlatıyormuş. İnsanlık tarihinin 1400'lü yıllara kadar ekvator çevresindeki bilgisi sınırlıymış, keşifler çağında ise bu bölgelere yoğun bir ilgi başlıyor. Zamanla keşfedilmemiş pek bir şey kalmamasına rağmen, bu keşifler utanç verici bir şekilde, oradaki medeniyetleri ve insanları görmezden gelerek devam etmiş. Afrika ve Güney Amerika medeniyetlerinin en büyük eksikliklerinden biri yazılı kaynaklara sahip olmamaları, bu yüzden kültürlerini gelecek nesillere aktarmakta zorluk çekiyorlar.

Sub-titled "Tales of the Equator" is just that - a book of tales that have been put together in book format. I found this book rather dry, and to be honest, one that didn't leave a lasting impression. I'll be glad to donate this one.

Some interesting stories, but very disjointed. Sketch maps of the places and voyage routes would have given needed context to the stories.
