I was bought, and read much of, this book when it was first published back in 1998/99, and I remember finding it interesting and enjoyable at the time but not quite the thrill that other contemporary dystopia books (Irvine Welsh, for example) I was reading at the time had given me.

Re-reading it now, fifteen years after the Millennium night which all of these short stories revolve round, it felt even more detached from what I prefer to read and enjoy reading these days. I just found it too keen on shocking and challenging the reader with new names and twisted realities - the reasons why I gave up reading sci-fi and dystopic fantasy type novels many years ago. This was strange in comparison - the anticipated wildness of the last night of 1999.. compared with how mundane the night really was for most people (me included), and how little has changed even fifteen years later, in hindsight. Oddly, the futuristic fantasies in the book now feel dated.
