Despite the title, this is a very cute book about four friends preparing for the season in Regency England. Three of the friends (girls) are somewhat jaded and want to form their own spinster club so that they can come and go as they please. The forth friend Alex is dejected because the girl that he thinks he likes won't give him the time of day and falls all over the known rakes. The four friends come up with a plan to make Alex look like a rake. They teach him how to dress and act so that he can try to win the girl. As Alex changes and becomes more attractive, one of the girls wonders if this is such a good idea. The other two start to wonder if they really want to be spinsters as they meet men who they find interesting. This is a really good clean period romance that wrestles with the questions of "why do women prefer bad boys?" and "is being a rake all it's cracked up to be?" I thought it was cleaver, creative and a fun, light read.

The Rake by Amy Watson
Elizabeth Carstairs, Lizzie, has grown up with her friends in the country, Alex, Sophy and Jane. This season it seems that Alex is taken by the beautiful Arabella, but as all young women, she seems to be taken in by the rakes. Thus the idea that if Alex becomes a rake, he’ll win his girl.

Alexander Masterson, Lord Partington or Sandy to his friends, is determined to win the most beautiful young lady from the ton. His three childhood friends pitch in and teach him to be a rake. Losing weight, tight clothes and a disinterested attitude.

The three girls have decided that spinsterhood is what is best for them. But in their heart of hearts, perhaps they’d prefer to be loved as well. Is it really worth winning the person of your dreams when you have to be someone you aren’t to get them?

Okay, so this book needs a line editor and proofreader. It suffers from typos, occasional poor grammar, and some writing glitches. In places, it's over the top silly.

And it's fun.

Charming. Enjoyable. Gigglingly funny. Yeah, predictable in places. Didn't care.

I'll be watching for Amy Watson's next book. I can put up with some typos and slap-dash writing. But life's too short to read dull books.

I really enjoyed this book. I liked the characters and enjoyed their friendship. The romance is clean for those who care. It definitely is charming and put a smile on my face. My only criticism is there were a few typos and the ending fell together a bit too quickly. But all in all it was a lovely book and I'd definitely recommend it.

I was laughing hysterically while reading this book. Very funny! Also very sweet and everyone gets a sweet ending. I would recommend this quick read to anyone who wants a bit of fun in regency England.

Regency romp in the park, very low key and nothing exciting happening but cute and quick. Why did she change the heroes nickname from sandy to alex so randomly though?

Not one I would reread.
