I suppose my initial expectations became somewhat deflated. I read some good reviews for this book, but for some reason, it didn't do it for me. While this book was okay, it seemed more erotic, almost kind of creepy than romantic. I think I probably expected more dialogue about the murder-suicide accusation of Dana's parents instead of around Chapter 17.
Reporter Dana Nichols, an only child, has come home to Hillsboro, Mississippi, determined to uncover the truth behind the tragedy of her parents' murder-suicide from long-ago. This comes on the heels of her grandmother's death. Her grandmother Georgia didn't believe Harry (Dana's father) killed Dana's mother Alicia. Something was being covered up and she knew Dana would eventually get to the bottom of it. Her father Harry accuses her mother Alicia of infidelity. Harry was found guilty of allegedly setting fire to their house after killing Dana's mother and tried to cover it up. But something is fishy about this murder-suicide plot.
Portions the narrative seemed a little choppy in some scenes. It felt too deliberate and at certain intervals and appeared to contain an overuse of adjectives. For two characters who were intelligent professionals, they quickly make love, quickly become engaged and quickly get married.
It didn't feel realistic. It also seems like some of the earlier chapters should have come later in the book.
I guess I expected more details and dialogue to be given about Dana's investigation instead of way too many lovemaking scenes. At the end of Chapter 24 is when we learn about the notes she'd taken about Harry Nichols trial, which his trial notes contained many discrepancies. She finds out her mother was pregnant when she was murdered, probably pregnant by another man, which turned out to be the case. Dana's snooping also led to death threats and to her husband Tyler Cole being falsely accused of rape by one of his patients to force Dana to drop her investigation.
Unbeknown to Dana, Ross Wilson, Sr. was Dana's actual father and the father of the baby Alicia Nichols was carrying because the father she knew, Harry Nichols was infertile. Lucinda Wilson, Ross' wife knew about his affair with Dana's mother and was behind her murder and Harry Nichols alleged suicide coverup while he was in prison on the wrongful conviction.

September 28, 2009Tyler Simmons Cole decided not to go into the Family Business, but instead he wanted to go into Medicine. OB/GYN was his field of choice. He was involved in a program that targeted areas where infant low birth weight was increasing. He wanted to give women who would not otherwise receive good pre-natal and post-natal care a chance to become mothers of healthy babies. This assignment took him to a small town called Hillsboro, Mississippi.
Tyler was not much on gossip, but the town's doctor killing his wife and then later himself. The doctor's daughter was in the house when he killed his wife. Tyler meets the infamous doctor's daughter as he rescues her from the town's known beggar. Tyler is instantly attracted to Dana.
Dana Nichols is an investigative report who came back to Hillsboro to bury her dear grandmother. She also wanted to put to rest the circumstances around her parents deaths. Dana an exact replica of her beautiful mother shocked some of the who hadn't seen her since her since she was a child.
Dana is taken by Tyler but is hesitant because of her past relationship. She didn't want to get involved with anyone because she was only going to be in Hillboro four months. Tyler had something else in mind for Dana.
I don't want to give everything away, but I do want to end my review with this:
I think Dana's fear of abandonment is evident in this story and Tyler was just the person to reassure her he wasn't going anywhere. He would protect her with his own life.
It is always good to reunite with family and friends. I hate we didn't get to see Matthew and Eve Sterling.
Ms. Alers is one of my ultimate favorite authors. I love the way she tells a story. She always, always, always references a scripture in her stories as does my other favorite author Brenda Jackson. They both are always on the mark with their scriptures and I love them for that.
The last installment for this family and friends saga is RENEGADE and from what I'm hearing this series will go out with a bang!

Poorly written, unrealistic plot, and overuse of the word "sultry." The ending really didn't connect to the rest of the story. Sorry. Definitely not my favorite. Romance novels aren't really my thing though. I'll just go back to murder/mystery...

I rarely give books a 5 but Ms. Alers wrote an exquisite love story with scenes that stilled me. She painted a picture with words and spoke a sexual language without one profane word. Bravo!

This book was just okay. You wait for the climax or the ending, and it just wasn’t there. The ending seems like an afterthought, the story was slow, and missed opportunities to expand on her investigation, and it just seemed like something was missing from the book.

Hoopla audiobook read.
As usual I haven't read the previous books in the series.
So ... Dana Nichols and Tyler Coleor.
It's like EVERYTHING happens in the last ~25 minutes.
A lot of focus is put on Tyler's family, which I'm guessing is because all the books that come before this - but it was cute to see him with his family and such.
Dana ... she's super cautious - which I get; things move FAST. But then she's also/still like that AFTER THEY'RE MARRIED so I was a bit less on board then.
Like... why'd you get married then?
They got married 2 weeks after meeting. O_O
I - of course I maybe thought that beyond being suspicious by nature but what has happened in the world ~of late/with certain high profile people in jails...
I liked that I didn't suspect the villain.
And the smear on Tyler. O_O
That was ... like FREAKING HUGE yet kinda just brushed off.
There's a lot lot lot of emphasis put on Tyler's age. He's 41! ... I think Dana is only 32 though?
I wish she'd have been a bit closer in age - I'd have been totally excited about it.
But I enjoyed this book, and am definitely looking forward to more by Alers.

Slow Read at first
At the beginning the story started very slow and very little excitement to read on. However I did continue reading hoping that the story would pick up which it did close to the end. This was not my favorite book in the series so far.

Love the Coles. love the fact that Tyler is a Dr. and not in the family business i love him and Dana together and glad Dana found out the truth about her family
