‘Just start. Inspiration will come. You just have to start!’

Canadian author D.J. Callaghan makes a sensitive writing debut with MAKING AMENDS, a novel that explores mental illness and loss in a manner that invites the reader to understand the conflicts facing those afflicted in a fantasy novel format.

Before setting her story afloat, the author introduces the central character and suggests the forthcoming plot: ‘Jenna sat in the little coffee shop a few blocks from her home trying desperately to calm her fury. She racked her brain in an attempt to fully understand what was causing such a volcano of emotions. She loved Danny but sometimes she just couldn’t stand to be around him and even after sixteen years they still hadn’t been able to fine a way to work together. His condescending attitude always managed to rub her the wrong way. They had been to counseling several times to learn how to communicate with one another, and they did really well in the psychologist’s office. But left on their own they just didn’t seem to be able to work things out like reasonable adults…’

As the novel progresses the story appears to be that of a fracturing relationship, and that it is, except that the author uses this as a springboard to make the tone more spiritual, as the synopsis outlines: ‘When her marriage is on the brink of failure, Jenna the unbreakable starts to crack. And when she does, all heaven breaks loose. Jenna is one of those unstoppable people who walks through life without breaking stride even when the whole world is falling down around her. Her life has been filled with trauma, but she’s always risen above it. Until the day she no longer can. Her Brother Mac thought suicide would be the end of his pain. In the afterlife he finds not only is this not the case, but he now has to fix the traumas his actions have caused. But he’s not alone. Accompanied by Jenna’s guardian angel Mac saves his sister and embarks on a journey of discovery. With this celestial support team, Jenna is able get back on track and help her brother in his mission. In her newly fortified state, she joins forces with her spiritual cohorts and the trio dedicate themselves to helping others caught in the cross hairs of mental illness.’

Well written and with a degree of sensitivity rarely found in novels that lever mental illness as a scriptive tool, D.J. Callaghan succeeds in advancing her desire to enable understanding of the impact of the manifestations of loss.

A solid first novel by a budding writer - I'm curious how Jenna's hinted adventures with continue to progress, especially as the author continues to hone their skills. Jenna is compelling, the supernatural elements are interesting, and I like that the romance elements focus on reconciliation over something more dramatized.

This book is definitely out of my demographic (25M), but I don't regret reading it at all. I think for the target audience this would be a solid hit. I hope the writer continues with the potential sequels that feel foreshadowed here. I would buy something like this for my Mom.
