John "Jack" McManners CBE FBA was an English clergyman and historian of religion who specialized in the history of the Church and other aspects of religious life in 18th century France. He was Regius Professor of Ecclesiastical History at the University of Oxford from 1972 to 1984. He also served as Fellow and Chaplain of All Souls College, Oxford from 1964 to 2001.
John McManners' illustrations are impressive, but the text doesn't do anything for me. The text leans towards factual and historical instead of featuring actual stories. The author gives reference to stories, but doesn't actually tell any.
It's odd because as I was reading the book, the places the author mentioned seemed familiar to me. Perhaps people read Cuthbert and The Animals and get the itch to travel to that Celtic part of the world to check out the flora and fauna. Other than that, it's a pleasant, but not terribly fascinating short read.
