Fenris had always considered himself a lone wolf among the pack when it came to the club life. Though now that his best friend had found an ol’ lady of his own, he had started entertaining the idea for himself. He never took stock in the old adage ‘be careful what you wish for’ but then Aspen was suddenly standing in front of him with those big, hard-to-resist green eyes and he was smitten. Aspen’s life had been turned upside down and inside out through a series of unbelievable and unfortunate events – and the hits just kept on coming. She wasn’t sure if her luck was turning or getting worse when she woke up in the badass biker’s bed, but Fenris knew… She was just at the apex of the curve in the road her life had taken.

This third book in the Pacific Northwest chapter of the Sacred Hearts Motorcycle Club features Fenris, who has shown up as a secondary character in the previous two books. He is Norwegian, with a Norse ancestry, with many interesting Norse traditions shared by him and his father, Vyking. Fenris uses Odin’s name in oaths, and he references the Vikings from time to time as in, “All I could do was keep this longship on an even keel and hope that the gods smiled upon me.” He references Havamal, Odin’s Rune Poem. And he plays Wardruna, a Norwegian music group. These idiosyncrasies give Fenris depth; they help build his character.

Fenris has been thinking that he might be envious of his brothers, DT and Maverick, who have found good women to share their lives. He was working as a bouncer in a bar when he ended up helping a patron who had been ditched by her friend and possibly drugged. Fenris takes her home where he lives with his father, Vyking, a retired MC member. Aspen is that patron and she has more issues and problems than any of the three women we have already met within the MC family…and that’s saying a lot…!

Aspen is hiding out from her husband; they are going through a divorce. This woman has so much trouble, grief, and worry! She’s consumed by it, and it consumes far, far too many pages. At the 93% completion mark, she is still whining (and I quote), “I don’t understand why I’m just so unlikable.” Really??? She’s gone through the entire book, had a big ol’ biker on his knees for her, had the entire MC helping her, found an employee who respects and likes her, made new friends…and…still she’s moaning and groaning like a third grader that nobody likes her. It got excruciatingly old.

Fenris and Aspen are completely mismatched, and I am truly flummoxed about why they get along. Aspen is needy, helpless, malleable, miserable, and deeply put upon by a mixture of tragic life events and personal makeup. Fenris is a little crazed (as we’ve witnessed in the previous two books) and yet is long on patience as he must constantly reassure Aspen that she will be all right, that her world is not ending. And that’s the story. That’s the plot.

There are a LOT of errors, as there have been in the previous two books. They make reading this book unnecessarily difficult. An editor and a proofreader could have made short work of all these roadblocks that rip a reader right out of the story. For instance:
 “It would leave my brother’s in a lurch.” The word, “brothers” is plural as used here and does not need a stray apostrophe. The sentence should read, “It would leave my brothers in the lurch.”
 “…the prosecutors office….” In this example, we need an apostrophe since the office belongs to the prosecutor. This should read, “…the prosecutor’s office….”
 “So, you’re Mavericks…” Aspen is about to say Marisol is Maverick’s Old Lady. Maverick should be a possessive noun, so the sentence should read, “So, you’re Maverick’s….”
 There are misplaced commas, such as: “That’s just what we, did.” The comma is superfluous, but still pauses the reader for no reason. The sentence should read, “That’s just what we did.”
 Occasionally, there will be an unusual word separation at the end of a printed line. “Keyring” is one of these words that is hyphenated strangely: “keyr-ing”
 “…they’re on their way to asses.” That’s pretty funny, but in context, that should read, “…they’re on their way to assess.”
 “You got once chance to fix it.” That should read, “You got one chance to fix it.”
 “Dump Truck was an analytical short.” There’s nothing short about Dump Truck. That should be, “Dump Truck was an analytical sort.”
 “He came buy to check on a batch….” Wrong homophone: that should read, “He came by to check on a batch….”
 “…what’s knew with you?” Another incorrect homophone; it should read, “…what’s new with you?” So, knew-new-gnu are all homophones and there are many examples of incorrect homophone choices in this book. Makes me wonder if the book were dictated and not verified for correctness?
 “…as to bend her that direction.” That should read, “…bend her in that direction.”
 Sometimes conversations are hard to follow because of the way quotation marks are used. Here’s an example:
“This is Dump Truck and this is his lady, Little Bird.”
“Hi,” Little Bird smiled and raised her hand curling her fingers in a wave.”
“Nice to meet you, Aspen.”
That “Hi” wasn’t Little Bird speaking. It was Aspen. The next line is Little Bird responding to Aspen.
 In chapter 18, DT (Dump Truck) insists that Aspen get some safer riding gear. Fenris responds, “I don’t disagree…but breakfast first, yeah?” Then two pages later, Fenris is thinking, “Dump Truck was right, though. We needed to eat first….” Did Fenris forget that he, himself, had suggested breakfast, not DT? Or did the writer forget?
 On occasion there is a slip in tense, generally between past and present tenses. Here’s an example: “In order for the rest of my boys to see in Aspen what I did, they need to see Aspen. The needed to talk with her….” This paragraph is in past tense except for the one time, “they need to see Aspen.” That should remain in past tense to conform to the rest of the paragraph; it should read, “…they needed to see Aspen.”
 Another mid-sentence change in tense: “I hooked my boot in the chair Little Bird had been in and sit my a** down….” The paragraph is in past tense, so this sentence should read, “I hooked my boot in the chair Little Bird had been in and sat my a** down.”
 There’s also a switch in pronouns: “Every man among us has our demons.” This sentence says that every man among them has the same demons that the speaker’s group has. Within context, this is not what the writer means. Every man is facing his own demons, not some other people’s demons. The sentence should read, “Every man among us has his demons.” Or, perhaps, more succinctly, “We all have our demons.”
 “’You’re a shy girl,’ he said, looping his hand into the crook of his arm.” This is Vyking, Fenris’ father, speaking to Aspen. I think it’s an error because he is next patting her hand and leading her into the MC clubhouse. It is an odd thing to link one’s own hand into the crook of one’s own arm.
 I believe the writer is using an incorrect word: “I was mollified. I felt as though Tic’s glaring daggers at me behind Fen’s back wasn’t warranted. I wasn’t doing anything wrong.” Mollify means to appease someone’s anger or anxiety. That is not at all what is going on here. Aspen is narrating and her anxiety is amping up, not down. Tic is not mollifying her.
 “Bring me and IPA and a Cider for my lady….” That should be, “Bring me an IPA...”

Sometimes I like the odd way Ms. Downey puts words together. For example:
 “We took our time overlooking the menus….” The phrase is “looking over the menus,” but I like the word, “overlooking.” It’s funny.
 “…folding them closed….” Again, speaking of menus, it is an odd word choice, but funny. “Closing them” would sound more natural, but this unusual description of closing a menu is humorous.

Fenris and Aspen have sex, lots and lots of sex. That is, after all, the purpose of the book. And there is no mention – not once – of using a condom. Fenris, we are given to believe, is sexually active. Aspen most likely is not, so she may not be on any form of birth control. That’s foolish and disrespectful of one’s partner in this day and age.

And the husband, what happened to him? What happened to their divorce? There is an unnamed person who may have been her husband, referenced at the end of the book, but we are not given any information about this man who seems intimidated by her new-found self-confidence, but we aren’t told or shown.

There is a chapter labeled “Epilog,” but it is not an epilogue. It is an advertising blurb for the next book in the series and it looks more interesting than this book was. This book, like the previous two in the series, is seriously good at the beginning. Ms. Downey’s beginning chapters are 5-star material. There are also fewer errors in the first set of chapters. But something happens around the middle of the book and the tale becomes mundane, repetitive and sex scenes seem to be added to replace a plot or storyline. The errors pile up, too, and the book becomes difficult to slog through.

I found myself irritated by two nonfunctioning Kindle features: the “Search” feature is not working at all, and X-Ray is not turned on. These are two elements that are helpful by emulating the ability to use sticky notes to earmark and return to a hard copy book page, as well as delve deeper into a book via “X-Ray.” (So handy!)

I rated this book 2.5 stars and rounded up because the beginning chapters were excellent. But the repetition of Fenris’ and Aspen’s thoughts dragged the book down and extinguished the storyline. The errors were detrimental to a good read; they made the reader pause and try to figure out what the writer was trying to say. Again, the “Epilog” chapter is a peek at the next book and I admit, I’m smitten. These chapters labeled “Epilog” are beguiling and suck me right in. I’ll definitely look at the next book. [Insert “Sigh” here….]

Apex of the Curve is the third book in A.J. Downey’s Sacred Hearts MC Pacific Northwest series. It is a spin-off of her original Sacred Hearts MC series and after a stint in Florida with Kraken, she finally ventured to one of the Sacred Hearts chapters and this one is in the Pacific Northwest that I absolutely love, love, love! After Dump Truck and Little Bird and Mav and Marisol’s stories I was so ready for Fenris and even though we had gotten the beginning of his story as the epilogue at the end of Mav and Marisol’s … I had no idea that she would take us down the road she did … sometimes I simply bow reverently for her imagination …
Apex of the Curve pulled out my heart and made me cry my eyes out and wish for someone like Fenris. I think all of us can recognise ourselves to certain extent in Aspen, the Little Leaf. I could feel her hopelessness, her despair, her loneliness … her goodness and her bravery … and Fenris AND his father Vyking and their goat farm … do I need to add anything here? I walked away from the story with renewed knowing that we all come to the apex of the curve in our road and we can keep hoping that someone like Fenris will be just around the curve … for us …

I was so looking forward to Fen’s book. Something about his Viking savagery mixed with a romance sounded super hot. This book was really well written and I loved all of the Viking life details. The relationship between Vyking and Fenris was interesting and most often really funny. Aspen was interesting, though again kinda a weak female character. I loved seeing more of DT, Mav, Dahlia, and Little Bird. Tic Tac was a jerk again, and I’m hoping he gets a book so we can better understand why he is the way that he is. My problem with this book was that it was just too sweet with very little action. This is more of a personal preference thing and not a failing of the book at all. I wanted grittier and darker with Fenris being more alpha intense. Again, a really well written and fun story - but too sweet for me to rate it a 4/5 stars.

When I reviewed the previous book in the series, 'Wind Therapy', I noted that the best thing about it was the final chapter. It was the opening chapter to "Apex of the Curve" - and the best things about this novel are the first and last chapters.
In between is a yawn-inducing romance between the hard-bitten and cynical road warrior Fenris and the soon to be divorced innocent Aspen. Not much happens for long periods except for "Am I good enough for her?" and "Can I live with an outlaw?" moments.
It desperately needs a tighter edit as it is littered with mistakes ("He was heavy into drugs - meth or heroine," "I opened the door after an intrepid", "We took our time overlooking the menus" and "Rain, shine, mist or even hale."
It did introduce me to the rather odd Norwegian group Wardruna - I am still undecided about their music.
2 Stars.

Holy moly

Now Reaver has always been my man but oh my! Fenris has taken number 1 spot!
We have seen fen over the first couple of books and he has intrigued me no end! Viking God and owns a goat farm with his dad,he also works as a bouncer at a local bar.
He meets Aspen when she comes to the bar with a friend, who by end of the night has left Aspen on her own and in a state, fen takes her back to his seeing that shes been possibly drugged.
What follows is a epic and sad love story, kicked and kicked again by the death of her mother, then brother followed by a cheating husband, fenris turns out to be just what Aspen needs.

Best by far in the series and can’t wait for more

What can I say, but they get better and better! Characters are realistic and relatable and we all need a Fen in our life and we all have times in our lives when we feel like Aspen. Loved the story, and Fen’s father Viking is a great secondary character that brings even more life to the story. Love to see life outside the clubhouse walls but the boys bring club life into all they do. Fabulous read and definitely can’t wait for the next in the series!

Great book

This isn't your typical MC read, the guys are a little rough around the edges, not entirely legal in their dealings, but the Brotherhood seems to have a heart of gold where women are concerned.Thoroughly enjoyable characters with an interesting story. Who ever heard of a Viking biker who raises goats, and makes his own mead. How about a girl downtrodden by life, she is strong in some respects, but life just keeps burning her, this woman get saved in more ways than one by this Viking biker. This book is well worth your time to read.

Fenris and Aspen

Fenris meets Aspen when she out with a friend, at a bar he bounces at. The friend leaves her to go off with a man. Fenris knows she is highly intoxicated and can't protect herself so he takes he home to sleep it off. She crafts dishware and pottery and sends him some pieces as a thank you for taking care of her. She had a story of it it it one devastating thing is another. She has known more loss and heart ache, and it just keeps coming.
Great read. Can't wait for more.

Great read

Aspen's world has come crashing down on her. Her mother died and exactly one month later her brother dies. On the day of his funeral she learns her husband is having an affair with a man so that leads to a divorce. Her friend convinces her to go out one night only she gets slipped a drug while her friend leaves with two guys. Fenris works part time as a bouncer. Closing time hits and Aspen is so out of it she can't function. Fen takes pity on her and takes her home. It's the start of an incredible relationship. Their story makes for some awesome reading.

SO GOOD!

I love this author, and this series! So Imagine my surprise when she announced that she was writing a series on a second chapter, I stood up and did the PP Dance. Not only was it everything I loved about the original series and characters but a whole new cast to fall in love with as well. Highly recommend for anyone who enjoys MC romance with some suspense thrown in and great characters you can't wait to read more about!

Apex of the Curve

Awesome read.. I absolutely loved Fenris and Aspen (little leaf’s) story ❤️❤️❤️ her life fell apart, one loss after the another and she was all out of reasons to care. Step up Bouncer (Fenris)(MC Brother) left alone by a friend and drugged, Fenris helps Aspen out by taking her home, cleaning her up and looking out for her and that’s the beginning of a beautiful love story.100% recommend this book to everyone ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Good addition

This book is a good addition to this series. The characters were good and the plot was just a bit different. Not your typical MC book. This book was more about the ups and downs of the main female character. It was a good book, but I missed the action that is normally in these books.

Wow

Great story. Start to finish with a lot of real life daily struggles for some. This story had me crying, laughing, grinning and even somber. This is a must read but I would start at the ones before this one. It is a stand alone but .....start at the beginning.

Fenris!

This was an excellent addition to 5his steamy series. Ferris falls head over heels for Leaf pretty much at first sight. There was a little drama with some sexy scenes. My only complaint was that Leaf was a little too whiny and cried too much.

I loved Fen and Aspen's story. I loved how he helped her and at the same time she was helping him without even knowing it. I loved seeing them grow into a couple. I can't wait to read Mace's story.

I devoured this book in just two days. The world-building is masterful, and I couldn't put it down. Both characters are realistic, with flaws and strengths. Together they are perfect for each other. Can't wait to read the next one that comes out.

good MC romance

Honestly, I liked this one the best if the series so far. The second book, Mav’s story, kinda turned me off - but the epilogue with Fen brought me back. This book does him justice. And Aspen is just a doll.

But I'm not sure about music because a person who can't identify Bob Seger in like three notes won't last long with me.
