Russell Marion Nelson is the 17th president and prophet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). Prior to his service as head of the Church, President Nelson served as president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. He is also a retired American physician and cardiothoracic surgeon.
A native of Salt Lake City, Utah, Nelson received his B.A. and M.D. degrees from the University of Utah (1945, 1947). He is a member of honorary scholastic societies Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha. He served his residency in surgery at Mass. General Hosptial in Boston and at the University of Minnesota, where he was awarded his Ph.D. degree in 1954. Shortly after medical school, he began working with the team of doctors which created the first heart-lung machine. In 1951, the machine was used in the first open-heart operation on a human being. Four years later, Nelson was the first doctor in Utah to perform successful open-heart surgery using a heart-lung machine.
Nelson served a two-year term of medical duty in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, being stationed in Korea, Japan, and at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Later he worked for a year at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts.
Nelson returned to Salt Lake City in 1955 and was initially on the academic staff of the College of Medicine at the University of Utah, where in November of that year he performed the first cardiac operation in Utah utilizing cardiopulmonary bypass. That operation was performed at the Salt Lake General Hospital (SLGH) on an adult with an atrial septa defect.
In March 1956, Nelson performed the first successful pediatric cardiac operation at the SLGH, a total repair of tetralogy of Fallot in a four-year-old girl. In 1959, he joined the staff of the Salt Lake Clinic, became associated with the LDS Hospital, and continued to make major contributions to the development of the thoracic specialty both in the clinical sciences and as the second director of the residency program.
Nelson's surgical volume was sufficiently large that it was a critical component of the residents' experience. He was an innovative and facile surgeon responsible for many improvements in cardiac operations. He also established a research laboratory at LDS Hospital.
By the late 1960s, Nelson's experience with artificial aortic valve implantation was such that he was able to report a large series of patients with an exceptionally low operative mortality.
In a unique combination of spiritual and professional obligations, Nelson performed heart surgery on LDS Church president Spencer W. Kimball.
The glory if God is intelligence, or, in other words, light and truth. ~Doctrine & Covenants 93:36
There is no conflict between science and religion. Conflict only arises from an incomplete knowledge of either science or religion, or both.
365 days of a spiritual thought directly from the prophet improved the quality of my thoughts and even my actions on some days. I know what kind of person I want to be, even though I still fall woefully short most days. But there were some very timely and faith promoting nuggets that even answered concerns I was having at the time, or at least soothed the worst of my doubts or anxieties. There is no way reading this book would not positively impact the reader. It’s just so positive and hopeful. Highly recommend!
“The gift of resurrection is the Lord’s consummate act of healing. Thanks to Him, no condition is hopeless. Thanks to Him, brighter days are ahead, both here and hereafter. Real joy awaits each of us—on the other side of sorrow.”
I knew insight from President Nelson would be great, but this book is a true gem. Each quote could be a whole sermon and I learned so much reading and pondering his words and the scriptures included.
This was my 3rd year to read it, and am excited to start reading it again for 2024! It has been such a blessing to my life over and over again.
December 31, 2022: What I wrote a year ago is true today! December 31, 2021: an ideal way to finish off my 2021 year reading. I loved this book! There were so many days that my daily reading from this book was exactly what I needed. How I love inspired insights and wisdom of President Russell M Nelson.
Content: 5 stars. What I'm looking for right now: much less. The one verse and one quote per day could be fantastic, but I found the format doesn't match how I want to study right now. 4 stars because I was quite disappointed that there were not references for the quotes. I often wanted to go look them up.
2025: This was now what I wanted. Absolutely beautiful and inspiring. I incorporated this into my deeper study. And yes, I did sometimes go look up references and write them in the margin.
I loved this! Each day begins with a scripture and then the prophet's insightful commentary. Many of the messages were just what I needed to hear. Be aware that the kindle version has some issues and takes you back to a blank page at the beginning almost every time you come back to it. Just sync to page read and it will take you to where you left off.
Oh, how I have enjoyed reading a short page each day this year! It gives you a little something to ponder about. The scripture and quote were often just what I needed that day. I love President Nelson so much. I can't get myself to put the book away. I think I will just start it again tomorrow and read it throughout next year as well. It really has brought me daily joy.
A beautiful "daily devotional" type book with great reminders. Each day includes a scripture and words from the prophet. If the reader wishes to read scripture daily scripture and is running short on time, this is a great way to do that. :)
Inspiring. Uplifting. Strengthening. Powerful. Loved it.
This ia an excellent daily devotional with scriptures and portions of talks by President Russell M. Nelson of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I read two of the devotionals each day as part of my scripture study. Excellent thoughts in this little book.
I really rate this book at 4.7 of 5 stars. I love President Nelson's hopeful words and insight. He truly is inspired. This was given to me as a gift, and I treasure it. It will be read again by me for sure. He exudes hope and faith. Definitely a keeper on my shelf.
This was a great way to study scriptures and the counsel of president Nelson. Each day of the year has a scripture and a related quote. We missed some days when we weren’t home but enjoyed the book and read most of it.
President Nelson is great at digging deeper into each scripture he used and making it meaningful for us in this day! Always was lifted upon reading this daily devotional.
The book is pretty much exactly what you would expect by reading the cover. What better way to end the day than a little thought from Russell M. Nelson.
I finished up this daily devotional a bit early. I loved the scriptures and quotes from President Russell M. Nelson that I could read and ponder every day.
This was meant to be read over the space of a year. Since I read it in just a few days, I'm sure I didn't take time to really ponder each message the way I should have.
Book I have loved started many times. Completed today. Such wonderful insights and Love. How I love our Prophet Russell M Nelson and all he teaches us by word and example.
