This book is a compilation of poems that describe the world in the simple terms of Jekyll and Hyde. It simply shows what this world is like with opposites and romance.
I went to see this thinking that a musical of Jekyll and Hyde has to be hokey. I was pleasantly surprised. Both the book and the music are really quite good.
The book for this musical manages to escape the trap to which so many fall prey and amazes without the necessity of being seen performed. However, a live performance of this show is NOT to be missed! The text of this show manages to convey all of the awe of a performance and even pulls on the heart strings with the tangled love stories throughout.
Linda Eder raised this music to a new level. Oddly enough the character of Dr Jeckyll/Hyde is the boringest one. The love songs, particularly the ones sung by Eder, are the cream of the show. They are true gems.
I have loved this music since the original cast album released in 1994. The script is a little limited, and very different from the book, but I don't mind because the music is so lovely and haunting. It tells the story well and I am excited to finally perform it later this fall.
