K.A. Silva has always loved Halloween and all things dark and spooky, and this comes through in every book of theirs, whether it's about scarecrows and witches or a nerdy cryptid of the northwoods. They love blending genres, particularly urban fantasy, romance, and at least a touch of horror. A happy transplant to the Upper Midwest, they enjoy having 4 actual seasons, especially autumn and, yes, winter. Inspirations include Ray Bradbury, Neil Gaiman, and Ambrose Bierce. Nonbinary/transmasc, pronouns they/he.
A mix between contemporary magical realism and a romantic fantasy book; surprisingly sharp characters with more depth than the whimsical cover art made me expect. The antagonists were a tad one-note and cartoonish by comparison, but sadly I've met racist people that single-minded, so it's not a stretch to call them realistic foils vs our central witch.
A recommended book and a new author from whom I'll be looking for more books to read!
This is a wonderful book. The characters are well developed, the plot is unique and engaging. The real.strength.of the story is the atmosphere. The magical, ramshackle farm comes to life beautifully, it's Autumnal environment drawing you in so that you can almost taste the pumpkin spice muffins.
