The continuing adventures of Luca Torelli, a cold-hearted gangster in the 1930s, and those in his merciless orbit. Abuli portrays the characters with humor and poignancy, and Jimmy Palmiotti's translations provide a true sense of New York in the 1930s. Jordi Bernet's art, of course, is lovely, but Torpedo is Bernet's masterpiece -- the closest the graphic novel medium has ever come to The Godfather.

Enrique Sánchez Abulí (born 20 February 1945) is a Spanish comics author, well known for his participation in the Spanish comics industry. His most famous work is the darkly comical gangster comics saga Torpedo in collaboration with Jordi Bernet.

He is son of the also writer Enrique Sánchez Pascual.

You really need a touch of comedy when every character in your story is a complete ass. You need to crank it over the top enough that no one could possibly think you're condoning or supporting this sort of a thing, or encouraging your readers to admire these people. Torpedo nails this - many other stories do not.

The short stories and the big one in this second volume are even better than the first. Although you see this type of stories in gangster movies for the last 70 years, it holds a special feeling in comics form. It's one of the best gangster/crime comic out there, surely the best from the european scene of comics.

Melhor que o anterior. As histórias são menos cliché, o humor (muito à base das calinadas recorrentes do protagonista) está mais presente e em melhor qualidade, e até o titular da série começa a ter um bocadinho mais de profundidade além de "filho-da-puta amoral". A arte, como sempre, é óptima.

The collection of stories in the second volume of the Catalan Communications editions of Torpedo 1936 aren't quite as strong as the ones from the first volume, but it's still mostly enjoyable. The adventures of mob hitman and general lowlife Luca "Torpedo" Torelli continue here as he finds more ways to demonstrate how despicable he is. The comics are wholly unapologetic with the depiction of Torpedo who is crass and malevolent with limited redeeming qualities. It's a refreshing change of pace from the standard anti-hero storytelling within the same subgenre, even if at times the Torpedo stories can be a bit too unrelenting. The slight black humor from the initial stories seems a bit more downplayed here which makes this a bit more dreary and too self-serious of a read. I still really enjoy Jordi Bernet's illustrations, but I do hope the future Torpedo tales have a bit more light-heartedness to tone things down a bit more.

Wie der erste Band: Eine Geschichte für Geschichte sehr stilvolle, amüsante und dabei rabenschwarze Angelegenheit. Ein, zwei Durchhänger gibt es natürlich, gerade die längere Story zum Schluss fällt da etwas ab. Das nimmt aber nei gravierende Ausmaße an und ist schnell vergessen.

Sem mudar muito o registo das histórias do primeiro volume, continuamos a ter violência, misoginia, machismo, calinadas, humor negro... Interessante do ponto de vista artístico e do ponto de vista histórico para a banda desenhada europeia. Vale a pena ler, apesar de a determinada altura se tronar "cansativo" de tão iguais que vai sendo as histórias. "Salvam-se" as que trazem algo de novo (como por exemplo, a infância do protagonista). De resto, mais do mesmo.

Este segundo volume abre com a história em que Luca Torelli e Rascal se conheceram, uma história em que Rascal se safou por um triz de ir desta para melhor, ao demonstrar a sua capacidade de disparar uma arma. As duas histórias que se seguem apresentam Torpedo em missões falhadas por circunstâncias que lhe são alheias – duas missões frustrantes que o levarão a direccionar a raiva em vários sentidos.

Sem pudor em usar as mulheres com as quais se cruza, ou em disparar a torto e a direito sobre quem cruza o seu caminho indevidamente, Torpedo nem sempre tem a vida fácil. Em Um Salário de Medo, história passada em 1929, a economia estagnada leva Torpedo a procurar outras ocupações, neste caso como condutor de uma carrinha que levava bebidas alcóolicas. O seu companheiro deixa-se enrolar por uma rapariga e cabe a Torpedo levar com as consequências de um transporte com falhas demasiado graves.

A última história do volume apresenta um duro episódio da infância de Luca Torelli, que explica como perdeu o irmão, resultado da violência doméstica a que os pai submetia rotineiramente. Trata-se de uma história que explica o contexto em que Torpedo cresceu, um meio pobre e carregado de violência, onde terá de se virar.

Este segundo volume apresenta história de um só desenhador, captando o tom mafioso, por vezes contraditório de Torpedo, numa sucessão de episódios que exploram a degradação moral da personagem.

I've never seen editions more bungled than in this series

The art is solid. The guys are perfectly evil, the guns are rendered very realistically and the women are beautiful even though he only draws one type with insanely thin waists and mammoth breasts but they don't appeal to me in anything but their faces and legs.

The story is as violent as you'll find and Luca is no stranger to raping women so this is for those who don't let real life scruples effect what they read. IT'S DIRTY.

Seguir a Torpedo es seguir las aventuras del asesino a sueldo más maldito y adorable de toda el hampa italoamericana. ¿A sueldo? Y, claro, a veces le pagan, aunque la mayoría de las veces sus asesinatos, violaciones y faltas sean simple venganza o incluso accidentes. Y es que quien la hace se la paga... aunque a veces toooodo sea un gran error. Torpedo es disfrutas del schadenfreude a concho.
