Good fun but outdated. Even though the book sought to confront gender norms I still felt uncomfortable with some of the messages. A lot of emphasis on the idea of beauty and husbands. Similarly the relationship of the king and queen where she is clearly more intelligent and yet needs to be underhand anf submissive in order to bolster his ego. Although the intention seems to be to show how the main character doesn't need to be beautiful or have a husband, I still felt that if I read it as a child it would have perpetuated these ideas. That said I did enjoy it, I just wouldn't read it to children today.
I am clearly reading anything just to achieve my goal for this year. So far, this is the least interesting children's story I have read. I wouldn't recommend or buy it to anyone.
As srongly sugguested by the title, this is a story about a strong princess. The setting is fairy tale + irony. The main character is strong and heroic, but human and flawed. The action and adventure involve numerous bad guys (and onfe particularly nasty princess).
Chapters are short, good for early readers who tire quickly.
One of my favourite books as a kid, this is a short, fun and easy read about a princess who learns karate and uses it to try and solve her problems, with comedic consequences.
