How will a man who doesn’t believe in fairy tales ever hope to recognize when he’s found the love of a lifetime?
Locryn Barnes knows what it means to be a fixer for Torus Intercession. Torus is the place that people in need turn to for everything from bodyguards to chaperones, and God knows Loc is the kind of man who’d rather play human shield against a bullet than spend even a moment of his life as a glorified babysitter. Which is why he tells a prospective client, in no uncertain terms, that he’s not the right fixer for the job when Torus is tapped to play what amounts to a life coach for a spoiled, burned out, fresh-out-of-rehab rock star.
Nick Madison has been living on the edge since he was seventeen—drugs, booze, men, women . . . you name it, Nick has done it. Now, at twenty-six, aimless and on the verge of losing everything, he can’t seem to give a damn. When he wakes up one afternoon, hungover and strung out, to find a stranger in his house ordering everyone around like he owns the place, Nick is sure he’s woken up in his own little corner of purgatory. When he realizes why Locryn Barnes has invaded his life, Nick is determined to prove he doesn’t need anyone’s help, least of all from the walking, talking definition of infuriating.
Through weeks of recovery, of rebuilding his life and facing his past, Nick comes to realize that Loc is not the enemy. Nick has met every challenge and is finally ready to spread his wings and fly, but not alone, which means another daunting challenge to face. Now, Nick needs to convince the fixer that the rock star is his happily-ever-after. Which could prove to be Nick’s biggest challenge yet.
Mary Calmes believes in romance, happily ever afters, and the faith it takes for her characters to get there. She bleeds coffee, thinks chocolate should be its own food group, and currently lives in Kentucky with a six-pound furry ninja that protects her from baby birds, spiders and the neighbor’s dogs. To stay up to date on her ponderings and pandemonium (as well as the adventures of the ninja) follow her on Twitter @MaryCalmes, connect with her on Facebook, and subscribe to her Mary’s Mob newsletter.
Everyone that knows me, also knows that I love the hell out of Mary Calmes. Her books are some of my most re-read books ... (Matter of Time and Timing series, and let's not forget Marshals).
Now I really liked the first book and I think the second book absolutely rocked. This one though, I felt as something was missing. Now it could be just a case of it's me and not the book. I guess the whole "famous star" did nothing for me. I never really felt as though Nick was some kind of celebrity. I just found him a bit bratty... He wasn't one of my favorite Mary characters and that was a bit disappointing. I liked the characters in Croy's story so much more!!
The story also moved really slowly and the idea that some hired "Fixer" can come into your life and just completely take over every single part... it felt a bit unbelievable. Now usually I don't mind suspending my disbelief, especially when it comes to a Mary Calmes book, but in this case, it bothered me a bit. But like I said.. it could be just me.
So yeah, I enjoyed reading this one, because it is still a Mary book after all... but I didn't enjoy it as much as the previous two books. So I am going with 3 stars for this one.
I have very very high hopes for Owen and Jared's book and I really hope they will get the next book in the series... oh and that time flies because I can't wait ;)
Also me: Yeah and this one hit the beats from her older books that we loved. The main couple meet almost at the get-go. Distinct side characters. There's a wide-shouldered Sam Kage-esque paragon. It's enemies to lovers like Timing. The narrator isn't a good guy that everyone loves™️, he's more like Arman ... What on earth are you doing?
Possible Trigger - Some graphic description of animal cruelty that had already happened years ago.
How will a man who doesn’t believe in fairy tales ever hope to recognize when he’s found the love of a lifetime? Loc is the kind of man who never thought that he would spend even one moment of his life as nothing more than a glorified babysitter. That's exactly why he told his prospective client, in no uncertain terms, that he's diffidently not the right "fixer" for this job when Torus Intercessions is hired to play what amounts to a life coach for a spoiled, burned out, fresh-out-of-rehab, young rock star.
The rock star, Nick Madison, has been living "on the edge" since he was seventeen. Now, at twenty-six, he finds himself to be aimless and close to losing everything, what's worse is that he can't seem to bring himself to care. He wakes up one afternoon, hungover and strung out, to find that a stranger has taken over his house, ordering everyone around like he owns the place. Nick is fairly sure he's woken up in his very own, private corner of Hell. Nick is positive that he doesn't need anyone's help, least of all from the walking, talking definition of infuriating, hot as hell, man that has taken over his house and his life. Nick has met every challenge and is finally ready to spread his wings and fly, but not alone, which means another daunting challenge to face. Soon though, Nick finds that he needs...desperately wants... to convince the "fixer" that he's there to stay... that he...the big rock star...is meant to be his "happy ever after", which may prove to be Nick's biggest challenge yet.
There is good bit of humor when we meet Loc's mother a little more than half -way through the story. What a genuine "class act" she is!
This is my favorite of the series so far. I was a little worried, Loc definitely had a reputation and a lot to live up to from the first two books. He never came across as very likeable and I feel any time this is a setup for a future character it doesn’t always work that well.
It worked. Loc was of course, way more than he seemed.
I feel like this book made the most sense to me. The setup. This screamed Fixer. I loved how the story started and Loc got on the job and took care of business.
I loved the progression of the job and more. All the interactions and the healing.
And all that kept going, I couldn’t put the book down truthfully, and then, well, in Mary fashion it went a little off the rails. I still held on tight and enjoyed the ride, but the last 20% of the book was nutso! I grew slightly tired of Loc’s, what should we call it, insecurity? It became very tiresome and I was so very happy when he finally got it. And well, the crazy in Kentucky, well, it was CRAZY.
Overall, like I said, this was for sure my favorite of the series. The job was the most believable. I can see this being a thing and Loc was perfect for the job.
I am not really a fan of celebrity romances, not at all really, but this one really worked. I also normally have issue with addiction in my stories but this story, well, it was Mary and not gritty so it also was very readable to me.
This was a great way to spend a sleepy day after Halloween, a rainy Sunday and the first day of the time change.
It's amazing. Mary Calmes took a side character I didn't like in the past and managed to make him interesting enough that I was fully rooting for Loc and his HEA.
I don't think any other author could have pulled this plot off, but the side characters, the tertiary characters, the action, the drama...all of it's why I love these stories.
This story was really different from the usual (recent) Mary but at the same time had such a reminiscent quality to it that made it so very Mary. For once this story had actual story and actual characters and an actual coupling. Not words on page written in a flat monotone delivered by a MC that sounds eerily similar to a lot of her other works.
Also in what felt like forever there were no secondary characters fawning all over the MC which was a plus. No one was there constantly telling the oblivious MC that they were great and awesome and super smart and loveable and so on and so on.
This story had depth. It was sequence of events that happened over time and not her usual 24 to 72 hrs where declarations of love were made and moving trucks were called. Nick and Loc got to know each other, see each other at what they deemed their worst and worked toward a relationship that had sustainability. This was a happy little surprise and I really enjoyed it. 🥰
I enjoyed myself, but this author makes bizarre choices and the story was full of a lot of weird things.
1. the whole falling in love with your fixer/client. There's so much "you are completely responsible for my new healthy choices and now I rely on you for the rest of my life". It did NOT seem healthy. 2. this is the second book of hers I've read and there is way too much "I need someone to manhandle me and you're the only one who does" 3. the endless family drama 4. the manwhore nature of the main characters in this author's books. Like, I don't really enjoy knowing that a main character has slept around a LOT and it's not a fun fact for me.
So many other things.
But strangely, I also just enjoy myself so what do you do with that!?
I read some mixed reviews about this and as usual decided to disregard and give it a fair chance and ended up loving it! It's my new favorite of the series!!
I enjoyed how Locryn used his previously annoying belligerence to get Nick to turn his life around. It didn't hurt that the process to get Nick on the straight and narrow made me laugh so hard. Nick really was a brat and needed what he got.
I will admit that the drama in the last 20% had me laughing in sheer disbelief but as I said for the previous book, it worked for me and my current reading mood so it added to my entertainment rather than serve as an annoyance.
This was a great book and it should have been 5 stars. I loved it except in the middle of the book when Loc kept insisting he was not going to stay with Nick. It got so repetitive and boring I wanted to scream at him. Then he finally dropped it and admitted he loved Nick and the book got back to being wonderful. I still recommend this as a great book even if I did delete one star.
Even before this series was started, I’d noticed that the author often had characters who excelled at fixing things, so this is right up her alley. There’s something so deeply satisfying about seeing the hero come in, take charge, and make everything all better, even if it doesn’t come instantly or easily.
I’d been anticipating this story in particular because Locryn clearly had trust issues, and I’d wondered who would make it past his defenses. I wasn’t expecting how fiery the initial interactions between Nick and Loc would be, but it made sense that it wouldn’t be immediate smooth sailing. I loved the possessiveness that came out later in the story. It was a blast to read and will definitely be on my favorites shelf.
Seriously, at some point I will re-read her work, dissect it, and figure out why her characters pull at each and every one of my heartstrings. God, I just loved the mc’s, together and separately. This entire series has these flawed alpha males with equal parts strength and vulnerability that makes them irresistible and lovable. Loved this, and I have to read book four this instant. Highly recommend for those in the mood for a swoon-worthy romance that’s more closely reminiscent of ‘traditional contemporary romance’. At least in my opinion, I have the same emotions from a Nora Roberts book as I do Mary calmes. She delivers a romance that is nostalgic to me. ❤️All the hearts.
This feels as if it's unedited plotwise, or I'm really spacing out while reading it, because there are names thrown that mean nothing to me, some 'fighting' scene with Nick and a couple of his friends that are completely unfamiliar to me, a supposedly tug and pull between the two MCs that is not manifested on page... They're suddenly visiting Loc's mother together, when they're barely talking to each other, they barely have any rapport together but there're random phrases of 'he had very nice lips' that come out of the blue and generally, they're not making any sense as a couple.
Not feeling the chemistry between the MCs and not particularly liking either of them: Locryn's a high-handed, emotionally stunted man, and Nick is completely nondescript and bland. Pity because I liked the first book a lot and skipped the second because this one had better reviews :(
I enjoyed this one. Here we return to what worked for me in the first book, a bit a time getting to know you before getting together.
I wasn’t sure I was going to like Loc as he came across very badly in the first book, but I loved him. I loved his smart mouth and the fact that he was able to do his job and keep sight of what the goal was, even when Nick was being nasty. When he believed that he had read the situation wrong, I really felt for him.
I also loved Nick, he got himself into the situation he was in, but it couldn’t have been easy to have someone rule your life, and to be threatened with that happening all the time. I enjoyed watching him snap out of it and when the banter ramped up between the two it was fabulous.
The secondary characters again were well done, I really want Owens book soon.
If you have any aversion to Mary Calmes's style, this is an intense version of it.
Obviously, I enjoy her heroes and their people, but even I was slightly put off by all the appraising and yelling dialogue tags. The main reason this is four instead of five stars, though, is because the Loc seen previously and the Loc who is our MC here seem like different men. I'd have to read the three books again closer together to be sure, but he feels less confrontational, and that's cheating, if true. The off feeling is valid regardless.
Also regardless, I enjoyed the story anyway, including Loc's mom, and Nick's backstory and that fallout was, I thought, well done. I particularly appreciated that
The first half of this book was a 4 star book for me. Loc was a different character from some of Mary Calmes typical characters and although Nick was a spoiled brat I could see some of where he was coming from and understood both characters. I loved watching Loc work around Nick to get him to a place he could be healthy. However at about the 60% point it felt like the book was basically over and yet there was a lot to go. Then we really got into Nick "pushing so hard" on Loc that they were meant to be and Loc continually trying to convince himself and Nick they weren't. So much mush at this point that I was rolling my eyes. Add in all the crazy family drama and it diminished my enjoyment of this book. 4 star first half 2 star second half for an overall rating of 3.
Rating: 3.5 stars I really enjoyed this book. What brought my rating down a bit is the fact that I spent the whole first half of the book annoyed with Nick and then I spent the whole last half of the book annoyed with Locryn. I’m not really sure the two of them meshed fully as a couple. I also found the drama with Nick’s family a bit over the top. So overall, I did really enjoy the book. I just had a couple of issues with it that bothered me a bit throughout the story.
I wasn't really looking forward to MC Locryn's book as he didn't exactly cover himself in glory in book 1. BUT Mary Calmes pulled this off! This MC found his footing and excelled in this job with MC Nick. Lots of friction in the beginning (well, probably for half of it) then plenty of action and a lot of family crazy in the second. Kept me entertained which is all I can ask ;)
Narrated by Tristan James - 5 stars
Reread 21 May 2023 Loved it. Lots of action with an enemy to lovers theme.
Locryn/Loc, 32, a big man, strong and commanding, must intervene and keep a rockstar sober and healthy. He works at Torus Intersession. Nick, 26, a burned out, rehabbed rocker, is spoiled and out of control. He has a contract to fulfill, and needs help.
Loc has his assignment, to keep a rockstar from a relapse, and when he sees Nick, he’s got a lot to do. The man is a shell of himself, bedraggled on drugs and booze, and it’s serious. Loc takes over where others have failed, and first takes out the “trash.”
A new program, and lan is going to get his man back on track. Loc’s process is efficient and successful, because Nick begins to see the light, with proper meals, exercise, and more.
They visit Loc’s quirky Mom, who Loc adores, and soon, so does Nick. Nick is stronger now, looking better, and gaining his strength.
We get sexy scenes, but loc is reluctant to dive in head first, because he’ll be leaving eventually.
There is much to learn and we get great descriptions and fun characters, plus a fast paced tale. There is jealousy, conversations, deep thoughts revealed, and more hot sexy times with our two vers men.
Each story in the series can stand alone, but it’s great to know the background of the company men.
A cantankerous fixer and a recovering addict are at the heart of this third volume in Mary Calmes’s ‘Torus Intercession’ series. Locryn has intrigued me from the very beginning, because even to the few (very few) people who know him as more than just a colleague, it feels as if there is more under the mask he shields himself with. Watching Nick discover the many layers of Loc was extraordinarily entertaining.
The very first thing I learned about Loc was the immense love and truly awesome relationship he has with his mother. I knew immediately that no man who loved his mom with so much of his heart could ever be the a**hole and inconsiderate jacka** many had accused him of being. Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t a mother-son “oh boy, the umbilical cord doesn’t stretch that far” kind of relationship. No, this is one built on love, respect, and genuine caring for each other. The fact that Loc’s mom is a hippie extraordinaire makes the whole thing quite hysterical, and when she talks to him about her latest protest movement, or natural balance and alignment, etc., I was in stitches laughing so hard!
This was definitely the best of the series, IMO. Locryn was outstanding in many ways and was respected by many but he was not (again IMO) a typical Mary Calmes hero. I see him more like Ian in the Marshalls series. Big, strong, can give the evil-eye better than most, very intimidating, but inside? Loc longs for someone to love and preferably someone he can submit to--someone willing to be the aggressor in the bedroom.
He ultimately finds that man in his new client, rockstar Nick Madison, who has just left rehab and is hopeless, helpless, malnourished and in need of a fixer. Over time, the men become friends and eventually Nick manages to convince Loc that he is indeed the man for him.
I loved both characters, and the secondary characters, including Loc's mom, a throwback to the 70s. The story was interesting, dramatic, and yet full of family and family values. And there were some amazing sex scenes. And Mary Calmes knows how to write those. The best part to me is that when they happen they make sense. There's no gratuitous sex thrown at readers simply for titillation.
Definitely **4.5 stars** and I may even go back and raise that if I go a few more days on the cloud I'm currently riding. I'm looking forward to book four.
Fix It Up was amazing. I am LOVING this bodyguard/fixer series. Book three is Locryn's book, and I forgot how hard I fell for Loc & Nick during my original read. So imagine my surprise when I was on the edge of my seat through half the story LOL
Locryn keeps his soft, soft heart buried under a hateful and hardass exterior. He gets called in to guide Nick Madison into sobriety. Nick is a rockstar just out of rehab, and his record company is ✨️this close✨️ to putting him under a conservatorship. Locryn is the final chance for Nick to get himself figured out.
Loc comes in like a wrecking ball, making Nick's home a sanctuary, an oasis. Hires a maid and a chef and begins to set up a framework for Nick to live his best life.
Neither men expect to find their person/home in the other, but that's exactly what they get. This story is full of plot, and the steam picks up when Nick is back to 100%.
I truly have enjoyed every book in my reread, but there is just something about Locryn and Nick. They push and pull each other when their feelings are so obvious to literally EVERYONE... except each other.
I'm trying to read this book but can't get past how spoiled and entitled Nick is, and how much he wastes everything he has. Maybe it's everything going on around the world but this seems so out of touch.
I won't finish this one. Too bad because I actually really liked the second book. And locryn was interesting until he started acting holier than thou because people weren't doing enough, in his mind, to help the spoiled rich boy.
The one Mary Calmed i won't finish
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Mary Calmes always writes amazing heroes and Locryn is no exception. He was a fixer but his latest project, Nick, wanted more than just that. Watching these two work around until they met in the middle was a joy.
I tried! I'm done with this series. The author sticks with the same types of MC's through the series, with little tweaks. While I still really enjoy Jory from Matter of Time, none of the others have met that level for me.
