I bought this book without realizing that it was part three of a trilogy (set in different time periods, with different protagonists, but linked through the history of one particular house), and so I read it without having read the other two. So it's possible that several things would have been less confusing if I had read the other two first. As it was, though, I found a few things extremely hard to understand. Then again, the protagonist Karol is as confused as the reader is for most of the book, so that's probably just a matter of the magical realism aspects of the story. All in all, it was a decent read, and worth spending the relatively short time it takes to get through a 190-page novel.
