This historically accurate novel portrays the life of the famed leader of the Sioux Indians, including his encounter with General Custer at Little Big Horn and his death in South Dakota. Reprint.
There was once a time in America when Native Americans roamed their land free without a thought of it being taken away. Then, settlers in search of riches destroyed the Native American way of life. The book Sitting Bull described this very well. It is a biography of the very intelligent Lakota war chief, Sitting Bull. The book was written by Bill Dugan in 1994 as part of a 5 book series about war chiefs.
Not only was Sitting Bull written about a great war chief, it also described the struggle of his people during the expansion to the Northwest by Eastern settlers searching for prosperity. It talked about Sitting Bull’s childhood and how influential his father was on him. It then uniquely covered how Sitting Bull got his name, as well as how he became a medicine man. The book did a great job of showing the needed change the Sioux Native Americans had to make in order to stay in their area. In addition, many wars and battles were introduced. Not only wars with other tribes like the Crows and the Hohe but also battles with the U.S. Army like the Battle of The Little Big Horn with General Custer.
In my opinion, this is a great book to read and should be recognized in historical curriculum. Before reading this book, I was ignorant. My thought was, why didn’t the Native Americans just go to the reservations? Didn’t they have everything they would need to live a good life? This book opened my eyes to the reality of the reservations, and how hard it was to live on one. If you think like I used too, you need to read this book. It will change your whole thought process about Native Americans. Kids like me need to know the Native American perspective as written in Sitting Bull.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes reading about history, action, or Native Americans. I am rating this book five out of five because of the way it made me feel during, and after reading It. Sitting Bull taught me a lot about the Native American struggle and I hope you learn about it too.
This was a really good read, which surprised me since the cover made it look like a fairly cheesy novel. It was exceptionally well researched, with the author showing that he clearly knows what he is talking about. There were a couple of shortcomings, though, that made this less than a 5 star read. The supporting characters often seemed exceptionally flat, with just Sitting Bull standing out as a vibrant, living character. That really held back the novel's potential, as everybody just seemed to be a backdrop rather than supporting people. He also switches from novel to "history lesson" randomly, which can seem rather awkward when reading through it. Much in the same vein, he doesn't actually write out battles and events in a fictional setting; he, instead, summarizes them down to a few paragraphs, written like they came out of a history book. He could have done better in that regard, as battles and conflict are often a great chance to throw in descriptive detail. He choose to skip over them almost completely. All in all, though, it's a great book about the life of Sitting Bull.
