***Content warning for violent attempted rape. After giving it some serious thought, I've decided this is the end of the line for me and this series. Normally I tag this series as a comedy, but this volume was way too dark for that. It's like the first half and second half are two different novels because the tone is so different. But more importantly, what kind of an author writes such an exceedingly violent near rape and murder scene in a series that's ostensibly a romantic comedy? I've always read this series when I needed something lighthearted - a pick-me-up, if you will. This was far from that. And honestly, it's ruined the series for me.
The more I think about it, the angrier I get. Not only at the pure brutality of that scene, but also the thoughts the author puts in her head during the attack (like, "Maybe this is karma for looking down on him" and "I have to survive, so what's a little humiliation?"), and what happens in the aftermath, where Zagan chooses to protect the man's reputation because why should he ruin other people's good memories of him? This is not okay. It's actually pretty gross.
