I have used Holly from Hatteras: A Tale of Saving Lives in my North Carolina classroom. Stories about the state children live in give them a sense of where they live and many of the children I have taught have visited the Island of Hatteras and seen the lighthouse, so this is a favorite. It is appropriate for older elementary children. Holly the girl in the story has very poor eyesight but her hearing is exceptional, so this is an opportunity to teach children that when people have what appears as a disability, they often have other abilities that are better than average.
