Rentt finds himself going back to Maalt rather faster than he had planned, and everything's on fire. The vampire Nive has been hunting has made his move, but no one understands the full extent of his plans until it's too late . . .

Yet again, Rentt's situation feels like it's being retconned with things like "more frequent destructive impulses as of late." Which is never set up. We never really see any of this, and are just told afterwards. It makes the overall story feel like it needed a lot more editing.

The situation with the vampire was at least interesting. It's not the first vampire we've met, but this is the one where the story finally starts to dig into what a "proper" vampire looks like, and some of the issues they deal with. I was not at all fond of what happened with Rina. It just feels so much like forced harem antics.

The short story at the end is AWFUL. Random guy does random evil thing and then immediately starts talking about all his motives and reasons at the first question. And the victim! "But when I heard what you had to say, I thought, hey, maybe I deserve to die. So I kept quiet." Like this series has never been excellent, but it's never been THIS bad.

So overall a very mixed volume. I rate this book Neutral.

Action packed and barely long-winded

This volume picks up right on the tail end of the last volume, which was right in the middle of conflict. The whole volume just about focuses on the events happening in MAALT. The final chapter has a little bit of tying up loose ends and giving you an idea of where the stories heading in the future. There were some revelations that I had predicted ahead of time confirmed but that was kind of becoming more and more obvious since the last volume anyways. Because of the nature of how much action was going on, the usual complaint I have of the authors long-winded redundant explaining filler was not as prevalent. Instead it focused on high descriptive combat, which was worth reading. The bonus chapter at the end was total waste of time though. Very weak sauce.

Spoiler ahead: Pour Rina! I mean I know she might be a potential fan fave and personally I liked her a lot because of her initial contribution to RENTT ' s development. But this was not the way I wanted to see her become a semi-permanent fixture in the story. I'm not sure how I feel about it...

To be honest, I am a bit hesitant to rate this 4 stars. Don't get me wrong, much like earlier volumes it is a good story with interesting characters, an interesting world and a decent amount of plot progress (for a light novel anyway). The new details on normal vampires is of particular interest. Rina's reaction at the end felt a bit odd compared to Rentt's relatively low key monster urges (they are mentioned in earlier volumes, just not often and in rather offhand manner), but that might be because her origin has more in common with regular vampires which we know are more dependent on blood than Rentt ever was. The side story at the end felt a bit abrupt, although considering the alchemist and Rentt had been more or less friends for some time it was at least somewhat believable. The real issue though, is that it is very short even for a light novel, about half the size of a typical one if that. So, if you like the series up till this point I see no reason why you wouldn't like this one, I did, but it is very short.

Garbage

Read the series up to this point and it's only gotten worse. Each book is drastically shorter, they're full of filler crap, and no major progression is made. I won't be buying anymore

Yu seems all over the place with this book, rather esoteric but leaning in high fantasy tropes too heavily can make a story predictable. I didn't see it coming.
