Clumsy, shy Mayuko has two true loves in being wrapped up in her futon, and listening to the latest from her favorite girl group, KBF47. She spends her lunches alone listening to their music and indulging in fan bliss, but on the one day she decides to practice one of their songs, who should catch her but the school's infamous lone wolf, Ooba-kun! Mortified, Mayuko is frozen in place... until Ooba-kun reveals he's a KBF47 fan, too! Their unlikely friendship gives Mayuko the confidence to grow, but the pair attracts attention, and not all eyes are friendly...! A charming tale of youth, friendship, and the power of shared fandom.
Mayuko has really bad social anxiety, not at the level of non-functional, but certainly bad enough to make every day a trial (if you’ve ever had social anxiety, her actions and attitude are painfully believable, trust me). She has a solitary life that mainly revolves around her love of the popular band KBF47 (whatever could that be a reference to...).
Enter Ohba, a kid who everybody assumes is a thug but has a good heart. After an awkward first meeting, Mayuko and Ohba make one another’s acquaintance again during Mayuko’s impromptu ‘dance like nobody’s watching’ performance during her lunch. The art in this part really nails the moment, making it all the more memorable - excellent work on the author’s part (although it IS easy to synch up music to an impactful reveal when you’re writing the lyrics yourself :P).
The rest of the book is the slowly evolving friendship between the two, as Ohba helps Mayuko out of her shell (and she has one both literally AND figuratively) and she does her best to become more than the person she is currently and learn how to be a good friend.
It’s just oozing with charm and it’s impossible to not root for Mayuko - she’s just so damn likeable. Ohba is a bit more aloof, but there’s clearly more going on there than we’re privy to just yet; there’s a bit of a pivot at the end that promises some interesting complications ahead.
This is just a solid, solid book and it’s nice to have something unabashedly positive without all the angst and miscommunication - just two personable people getting to know one another over a shared interest.
This is like sugar for my happy soul! IT IS SO ADORABLE! IT IS SO CUTE!
I am SOOOOOO happy I bought this a few months ago and finally picked up the last volume (digitally) to actually read the series.
This first volume did NOT disappoint! Mayuko is SUCH a sweet and relatable character! I found her story of wanting to have more confidence and hold her head high very much one that resonated with my younger self. Even as an adult, I still related to that desire of wanting to be brave even if people are watching you do something. <3
AND OHBA IS AMAZING!
I'll "bet" a new manga that he is the "mysterious guy" on tv and why he was able to help Mayuko the way he did!
But *hugs my Kindle* I LOVED this story! It is so clean and it's such a beautiful beginning to hopefully a romance, yes, but even deeper then that, a young woman making a new friend and learning to have a confidence to share the thing she loves: her favorite girl group, KBF47, through dance and song.
I am SOOOOOOO excited for volume two, but based on the ending of this volume, it looks like it will be people-trying-to-break-the-potential-ship-and-wreck-Mayuko's-new-confidence. #SoNOTHappyAboutThat
And all I can say to those "haters" is…GET AWAY FROM THESE PRECIOUS CHARACTERS!
HIGHLY recommend When We Shout for Love if you love sweet main characters, music/dancing, and clean, wholesome manga!
This first volume really gave me a lot of warm and fuzzy feelings, and it’s nice to see characters who struggle with anxiety and social issues. The story just lost me a bit with the main characters’ shared love of idols and dancing choreography. But it was still really cute!
3.75 Our MC is shy but she is working really hard to overcome it. Ohba is supporting her and helping her gain confidence by believing in her. I like that they are bonding over something that isn't typical (manger/player of sport). They both like dancing and the same music group. He sees her dancing and that is the catalyst for their friendship to blossom.
Love this story! Cute, draws you in and has a simple, fresh feel. Love it! Though I would like an older version of kenishiro ohba to appear in my life :-)
A promising start. She has terrible anxiety and inferiority issues, but she’s trying to change. He’s a misunderstood “bad boy,” who is actually nice and very supportive and patient with her. They discover a shared love for a boy band, and thus begins their unlikely friendship,

I am still one big smile after reading ”When We Shout for Love Vol 1” by Yuka Kitagawa. It is such a happy and positive read!
Mayuko struggles with social anxiety and prefers to be in her cocoon at home. Her ray of light is her favourite girl group, KBF47. Their songs are the soundtrack about her life and the life she wished she had - the kind of life where she's not scared of what other people think of her.
Ohba-kun, our male main character, is assumed to be a thug, but by chance, Mayuko learns that they have a thing in common – they are both fans of KBF47. But no one at school understands their new friendship, questioning why these two would even spend time together. Mayuko wants to change herself so people will get a different opinion, and no longer think that it is strange that Ohba-kun is by her side.
I need to gush about how good a guy Ohba-kun is! Ohba-kun is the polar opposite of Mayuko, but the BEST friend, and as Mayuko decides to begin her change by entering an online dance contest, he is by her side, supporting her.
This was a sweet story about finding the courage to be you and like the things you do in public. The message and story were so positive and I´m in awe of Mayuko and Ohba-kun's friendship. I want a friend like Ohba-kun!
