We're getting closer to the Heart...
Every time I start a new instalment of the Alice Worth series, I consciously set an end to my reading time. It is very easy to get sucked into Alice’s world with all her dramas and I’m always desperate to know what will happen next. I sneak peek at what’s ahead in the next chapter even when I know I have to stop for sleep/work/life. But, how can I stop when the baddies drop a magic bomb, Jack just went douchewaffle, Charles is manipulating, Malcolm just went skew-whiff, and Sean just growled???
Heart of Ice was everything I hoped for and more. Alice is back and she’s stronger, fiercer and smarter than ever before. But, she’s also showing a wee bit more of her vulnerabilities especially when it comes to the attachments she’s forming.
Alice is letting the barriers (and wards) down from around her heart. The constant tally Alice has kept, balancing out her past (that she had no control over) with the good deeds of her now, must surely be even. The risks she takes with her safety are pushing her friends to their limits. Finally, she realises that it hurts those around her when she doesn’t let them keep her safe as much as she keeps them safe. It is a work in progress, but she is making headways on trusting those around her. Her Heart of Ice may even be thawing enough to form attachments and stop her from running away.
Malcolm, her trusty, ghostly side-kick is still at her back fighting and helping to investigate in a quiet and lurky way. I feel like I’ve gotten to know him even better in this instalment. We get to know more about his history and how he came to be haunting Alice. They are nearly separated but Alice’s quick-thinking saves their link to each other. Malcolm also manages to play matchmaker, romance counsellor and storm brewer.
Sean…oh, my favourite werewolfy Alpha, you are one good man…with animal tendencies. Poor Sean, he’s finally realised that he can’t change Alice, and he’s going to have to live with her “issues” to keep her. Sean’s pack is giving him grief over dating a non-shifter and it seems that a few of them will go to any length to stop him from mating with Alice. There’s a certain pack member who I would have liked to fall off the side of a cliff. He and his wife were not my favourites and I was kind of cheesed off that they’re still around. I can’t see them putting aside their grievances and becoming happy packs with Alice around.
Charles, that fangy bugger, boy I wanted to kick his butt. I have never met (in a reading kind of way) a more manipulative, frustrating and jerky, jerk face in ages. I hate him one minute and the next, I’m contemplating Alice leaving Sean for him. But, like Alice, I know that his idea of love and commitment is a far cry from the normal. I almost need Charles to find his own HEA. I don’t want him with Alice because SEAN IS AWESOME!! I kind of want him to apply that same devotion he shows Alice to someone else. Hmmmm…there was a certain rum punch buddy of Alice’s at the end that could certainly give him a run for his money.
Talking about rum punch buddies…THAT WAS AWESOME!! I loved getting a glimpse of the mysterious and secretive Cyro.
Another fantastic instalment to the Alice Worth series. Heart of Ice is probably my favourite…since the last one. Lisa Edmonds’ has a fantastic writing style that is engaging and shows intelligence, imagination and thoughtfulness. It is also quite a coup that she provides a near perfect advanced copy where I don’t have to leave my grammar and spelling mind on the sideline. Each read from this author is a pleasure and I can’t wait for more.

⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱*I Need More From It*⋰⋱⋰⋱⋰⋱
This book was better than book one and two in some ways. This is simply because Alice ‘Allie’ Evelyn Worth (29, turns 30), a licensed private investigator, was more..... kind to Sean Maclin (42), a werewolf alpha of the Tomb Mountain Pack. I liked that she let him a bit more in. However, Alice has too many secrets and it's getting annoying. The there's the annoying Charles Vaughan (200), a member of the Vampire Court and a broker of mostly treasures and secrets. I just don't like him and how he acts around Alice. Maybe this is also a reason for not really liking this series; Alice's reaction to him. Again, this series has so many similarities to the Kate Daniels series that it's not even funny. This one just falls really short compared to it. I need Sean to be more powerful, I need Alice to open up more and I simply just need freaking more. I skimmed a bit in this book as well. It just can't seem to catch my interest.

This series gets better with each book, probably because Alice is less and less annoying…
When an investigation for the vampire court does not go as planned, Alice becomes the target of an ex-military vampire hater, and she is forced to hire Maclin Security to have a protective detail with her 24/7 until the man is caught. Alice is also hired to retrieve 3 magical objects that have been stolen, but when Sean and her finally locate the last of the missing items, they realize that it’s much more than a simple magical trinket as they were led to believe, and it puts Sean’s life in danger. To add another layer of problems, Alice meets Sean’s pack in this book, and not everyone is happy that Sean is dating a non-shifter. It doesn’t matter that she is a powerful mage, they think that an alpha should date a shifter, and some members of the pack are even plotting to get rid of Alice.
Alice is showing her badass side more and more, but she is also getting more clever and vulnerable at times. Overall, it makes her a much more likable main character, and I can even say that I like her now. She feels less cold and self-centered (I know it was a defense mechanism, but it still made it hard to connect to her), and she listens more to what others have to say and takes into consideration how they feel. Granted, she often listens and thinks about their feelings after jumping feet first into danger with her reckless plans, but it’s progress; at least she is willing to listen and consider them.
Alice is back with Sean, and they are stronger than ever. She is slowly letting him in, and she trusts him more and more. She is not ready to reveal all her secrets, but she comes to realize that he will never hurt her or betray her trust and that he knows the gist of what she is hiding and loves her despite her dark past. He is willing to wait for her to be ready to talk about it, and the fact that she is slowly opening up to Sean also shows him that she is serious about them and wants their relationship to work.
I have to give it to Sean, his respect for Alice’s private life and the way he lets her set the pace of their relationship is swoon-worthy at times. He understands her better now and knows how she thinks and how she will react to certain events to the point where he can stop her anxiety spiral before it even truly starts. I still think that Charles is more intriguing and that Alice and Trent would have been a very interesting couple, but I have to admit that I can’t dislike Sean or find a reason why Alice shouldn’t be with him. He’s a dreamy boyfriend.
Malcolm has been a favorite of mine from the very first book, and he continues to be amazing. He is a steady support for Alice but also does not hesitate to let her know when she screwed up and when she is being an ass. He continues to be involved in the investigations as Alice’s sidekick, and we are also slowly learning more about his past… With Bell being at war with Murphy now, I have a feeling that Malcolm will become more important eventually, seeing as he was one of Bell’s most powerful mages, and he will want to get him back.
Is it bad that a part of me is still rooting for Charles? I know Alice will never end up with him, but I find him intriguing and mysterious, sophisticated and refined, and I struggle to resist his appeal. His moral compass leaves much to be desired, but I don’t think he’s bad. He’s a somewhat good guy who does bad things sometimes, but deep down I don’t think he truly is a monster… Anyway, as I said, I know Alice will not end up with him, but I truly hope that he will remain in the series until the end as her friend because I love his character.

Re-read: 09/2020 - still 5 stars!
Well, she's done it.
Three five star ratings in a row, this entire series so far. I don't think any other author has ever accomplished that with me.
I just love this series to bits. It's all I look for in the Urban Fantasy genre:
1) A strong, bad-ass female lead who is perfect role model material. She's compassionate, resourceful, a total smart-ass who doesn't take crap from anyone.
2) An amazing love interest who worships the ground she walks on, who isn't only protective of her but of all the people in his care, and still doesn't try to cramp her style. He's supportive, passionate and yummy.
3) A fantastic cast of supporting characters, including Malcolm the adorable ghost (who may or may not be the love of my life), inscrutable but oh so intriguing Vampire Charles Vaughan, and finally a fun female sidekick I can't wait to read more about.
4) Elaborate world-building, a fascinating background story that's getting revealed bit by bit and keeping me on the edge of my seat, lots of suspense and action.
At the beginning of this book, I even thought it might become too much... There were so many subplots being stacked upon one another I was worried the story would lose itself in them. I mean there was no way Lisa Edmonds would manage to do them all justice, right? Wrong!
All these subplots weaved perfectly into each other and created this brilliant overall narration, all of it coming together in the end and leaving me content and happy.
And to think that amid all this action and general bad-assery, she managed to still muster up time to develop a sweet and swoonworthy romance that had me all tingly and fuzzy on the inside...
Kudos for that.
Then I noticed the heading. "Oh, you have to be kidding me. 'Storm Girl?'"?
He frowned and took the phone back to look at the picture. "What?"
"They're calling me Storm Girl," I fumed. "Maybe the hoodie made me look young. I'm a high-level mage and a licensed private investigator. I'm on a first-name basis with five of the nine members of the Vampire Court. I'm thirty years old, for crying out loud. Storm Girl?"
Sean's mouth twitched. "And?"
I crossed my arms. "Damn it, I should at least be Storm Woman."
You're looking for a sexy, fun, exciting series?
Then this is my heartfelt recommendation for you!

I really enjoyed it - I like Alice's growth as a person, and I like that she doesn't charge off to handle everything alone like a moron, the way so many UF heroines do. She makes a plan, she utilizes her resources, and she wrangles whatever backup is available to her.
Because of that, I got really pissed at Sean in this book. Like, smoking pissed.
Fortunately it didn't drag out too long, and Sean took steps towards redeeming himself. But we'll see how he acts from here forward. I honestly like him a lot less now.
And then in the very end, I was also mad at Alice. So the very end of the book pissed me off, because she was suddenly being a stupid asshole out of the blue.
Still, 4 stars for the story. Just ugh. This dumb shit needs to end.

I had to think before writing this review... it was such a ride. How to write a review without giving away plotpoints or spoilers.
This is the 3rd book in the Alice Worth-series and it is not a standalone. It is an ongoing series about Alice, a mage working as a PI. She has a werewolf boyfriend, Sean, and a ghost for a house-guest (Malcolm) as he is connected to her. Alice has fled her horrific past and made a new life for the last 5 years, but her past is getting near and it is unsettling.
Hired by the vampire court Alice is on a misson when all goes to hell and she has to be protected by Sean's security firm. Meanwhile she also has a PI job to retrieve some magical objects and that is going quite well until it is not and Alice has to risk everything for the man she loves.
I cannot reveal more, only that this is freaking-awesome and I think the best in the series yet. Alice is such a great but complicated character. I also enjoyed all the other characters (Malcolm!) and love how Alice is changing and growing despite everything she went through in her life.
I can't wait for the next in the series, especially after the ending and the teaser chapter. This series is on my favorite-series shelf for a reason!

After a slow start this one really got going. I liked the magic system and the characters . I can’t wait for the next book. My only hope is that the author doesn’t drag out the secrets for any more books after this one....it’s kind of walking a fine line now between building tension and being just plain aggravating.
I’d recommend this one to fans of Ilona Andrews and Patricia Briggs.

As always with this series, I enjoyed my time with Alice, supernatural private detective and the other various characters in her world. I especially enjoy Malcom her ghost sidekick and Sean, her pack master boyfriend. Now she has a new garden in her backyard and one really must stay away as it eats those not allowed to be there. That was a fun addition to her world building which I’ve also quite enjoyed in all of the books.
This time she’s on the hunt for magical items recently stolen from a rich woman in her town. In addition, she’s undercover trying to find the culprits responsible for a horrendous attack on vampires-ones that Alice personally knows. So with two very active cases going on there’s never a dull moment. Add in her ongoing fight to stay hidden from her estranged(and maniacal)family members and this ended up being the best of the three books I’ve read so far. However, they are all very good. Recommended to adult urban fantasy and/or paranormal romance readers.

One of the things I do love about Lisa's storytelling is her ability to give each character their own distinct voice.
Charles is a guy few could conquer, but Alice has a way about her with him. He would be high maintenance to date. Oh, boy!
Sean is all things loving and gorgeous... and patient!
Malcom is the perfect, loyal sidekick.
The crew of sub characters really help keep this series fast-paced and interesting.
Villains around every corner.
Alice gets beaten to a pulp every book, but it doesn't get old because she fights the good fight and she is kickass.
I love seeing Alice opening herself up to female friendships.
Awesome storytelling.

The crew of sub characters really help keep this series fast-paced and interesting.
Villains around every corner.
Alice gets beaten to a pulp every book, but it doesn't get old because she fights the good fight and she is kickass.
I love seeing Alice opening herself up to female friendships.
Awesome storytelling.

Welp. This book solidifies my rooting for only Sean!
So, there is a lot going on in this one. Alice is working with the Vamps to bring down the faction that bombed Charle's bar- as well as track down some mysterious magical items that happened to go missing from an elusive wealthy client. Also, amidst all of the chaos going on in her professional life- Alice is still slowly coming to terms with how her actions are negatively affecting her relationships and friendships.
With new secrets revealed and old enemies coming back to haunt her-Alice has to do everything she can to fight for her new life and open herself up to more people.
Also, Also--Charles
And side note- I wish Alice would stop flirting with other guys- I mean damn Sean HAS to be seriously secure to deal with all of the attraction she's constantly having towards other men.

Woohooh!! Alice is FINALLY starting to soften and seem human (well….)! And, that makes an already fabulous series - and story almost perfect! Lots of page-turning action, twists and all around yummy reading pleasure!

This book was a hell of a ride!
I am so glad I found this series and it has rekindled my love of Urban Fantasy.
Only a few niggles and the main one is the secret keeping. I get why she feels she still needs to hide her true identity from Sean, but surely with the way this book ends she needs to tell him now. Also, after everything that went down, she should have told him about her deal with Veles.
I really love Sean and Alice though and I love the oaicng and the plot. Alice is far from perfect, but she really is a great heroine.

I had so many people around me wondering if you were strong enough to be my partner that I didn’t think to ask if I was strong enough to be yours. It’s me who needs to be stronger, not you. I’ve always told myself that I wanted a partner and a mate who would stand beside me and who would fight with and for my pack, but I don’t think I ever really understood what that meant until now. [...] You are exactly what I’d wished and waited for, and I almost blew it because I didn’t know how to deal with your power, your courage, and your need to protect others. You face your enemies as though you were the alpha of a pack. You are fierce and you’ll fight until you have nothing left. [...] The minute I figured out that I had to stop trying to force you to be someone else, the answers fell into place.
Ok I know that quote is kind of long but I was just blown away at the end of this book, and I would like to congratulate Lisa Edmonds for being literally the only author that I can think of to write an urban fantasy with a werewolf love interest that I actually like! I'll admit it was a little bit rocky in the first few books, but I think Sean and Alice have both grown a lot since then [this book was GREAT for their individual character development and the development of their relationship] and it's great to see them in a place where they respect each other. Seriously, A+ for having your ~dominant alpha male~ character examine his behavior and admit that a lot of it is unreasonable and he's working on it [and also that Alice has a few things to work on as well, it's nice to see them meet in the middle].
The rest of the book was great as well. Definitely a lot happened here regarding Alice's backstory and I'm excited to see where that is going to go next. Also I just really love the focus on like ...free will and consent in this particular story line. It's sad how refreshing that is in the urban fantasy market today but it is unfortunately true. Overall just a really fun series with a very interesting magic system and three-dimensional characters and relationships. Can't wait to see what happens next!

Read for Gotta Have Romance With a Kick group series buddy read.
This book pissed me off. Well not the book but specific characters.
A LOT happens in this book. Alice has bodyguards due to a crazy person who is after her. So she hires Sean’s company. That’s cool. But then there’s some dissension in the pack with regards to Alice’s place as Sean’s potential mate. What happens during this frustrated me to no end.

4.5, my favorite so far. Would have made the 5 star if the MC didn't annoy me sometimes still - but she's thankfully gotten much better on her prickliness and devil may care attitude. I'm still head over heels for Sean, although even he has an overdone angst moment where I wanted to shake him.
I do wish she wasn't so fragile and showed her power a bit more - but we do get an epic scene, excellent fight finish - we need more of these!
The scenes with Charles were grim and enjoyable. It's not a love triangle thankfully, but it's interesting in one way, a bit frustrating/sad in another.I want them to still have a strong bond/connection even though I'm team Sean romantic wise. Enjoy her new fighting bud, and we get some Malcolm heart to heart. That ghost needs to stick around.
And the new plants? Hilarious
Will there be any effects to the dream attack since she saw an effect on Jack from it? hm.

This series is starting to get really good! I like how the author is setting up things in this book that will obviously come into play in later books. I love a good long game!

Alice is hired by a wealthy woman who has been the victim of a burglary. She is tasked with retrieving the three magical items that were stolen. Each item has an interesting effect on her or the people around her, serving to take the plot in new directions. On a related note, Alice's Aunt has been sent to the city to further the war her grandfather is waging against the local cabal. Alice must unleash new powers to keep her aunt from destroying the city; however, it may reveal her true identity.
I'm loving this series. Alice is an interesting MC. I can relate to her self-imposed isolationist views and I like how she is figuring out how she affects the people around her that care about her, like Sean and Malcolm, in particular. I'm not sure what the deal is with Charles. I keep expecting him to become a love interest, but Alice resists. Even saying that I am still Team Sean all the way. It seems Alice's past is about to come knocking and I'm excited to see how that plays out and I'm wondering if it will give her a chance to relax and enjoy life a little.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this series so far and this third book did not disappoint. Some seeds planted in the prior novels are taking root (figuratively and quite literally in one case ;) ). I love how in each book we learn more not only about Alice and her dark past, but also about each main character and the different supernatural factions (not in an infodump style, but in small glimpses that occur within the natural flow of the story). In this book, we finally get to meet Sean’s pack. We also meet someone from Alice’s past leading to further foreshadowing of that inevitable showdown this story is ultimately building towards.
It is so easy to get lost in this world with such a strong, intelligent, and empathetic female lead who keeps fighting to help people despite all the horrors she has lived through and keeps encountering that you can’t help but cheer on (Stormgirl is such a badass ;) ), not to mention the intriguing and fun cast of characters in this story (Malcolm is still my favorite ❤️). The effortless flow of the narration and plot attest to the author’s impressive writing style and beautiful craftsmanship. This remains one of my favorite Urban Fantasy series (ranking up there with Ilona Andrews’ Kate Daniels series, Patricia Briggs’ Mercy Thompson series, and Kim Harrison’s Rachel Morgan series). Highly recommend this series (make sure to start with the first book!). Can’t wait for the next book. :)

All I can say is wow! With a lot of series, as you get into further books the story begins to lose steam. With the Alice Worth series it’s the opposite. I didn’t think Lisa Edmonds could wow me anymore than she already did in Heart of Malice (book 1) and Heart of Fire (book 2), but Heart of Ice was so intense and thrilling that I was breathless (quite a feat given the sedentary nature of reading) and could not put it down.
Like the first two Alice Worth books, it’s a read-through-the-night-ignore-all-your-responsibilities-by-day-until-you-finish kind of book, only even more so than books one and two. I think part of it is that the stakes are more than Alice’s life or safety now. Now, the stakes have upped to include her heart, because she is finally starting to share it. Additionally, Alice’s past is beginning to catch up with her, leaving me both terrified and eager to see how that unfolds.
I should add that I was really pleased with how much Malcom we got in this book. Some reviewers of Heart of Fire (book 2) expressed disappointment that Malcolm was barely in that book. I loved Heart of Fire, but I agreed that I missed Malcolm. Lisa Edmonds definitely delivered here in Heart of Ice (book 3). Malcolm is very involved in the story in Heart of Ice and it was great to see his relationship with Alice, and even Sean, grow further.
It’s so very rare that I discover a book in which I connect so intensely with the main character. With Alice I feel like she’s real; I connect so deeply that it’s like I’m reading about real people and real friends not characters in a book. This is a series that keeps getting better and better. Alice and Sean are back dealing with stolen magical items and an ex marine out to kill her. I love how much Alice is changing in each book. We get more glimpses of Alice’s past and how powerful she can be. Her relationship with Sean is changing as well as the one with Charles. This series has it all. Bada$$ heroine, sexy alpha, and lots of action. Kept me turning the pages well into the night. If you like Kim Harrison and Patricia Briggs, you’ll love Lisa Edmonds.

This story was super exciting, full of intrigue, nail-biting moments, and a romance to cheer for. I am loving this story, loving Alice, and loving falling deeper into this rich world. Highly recommend!

This was a little on the disappointing side. The first 50% of this book felt like a slog to get through and I kept putting it down. The first half primarily focused on Alice as the target of one of the guys who fire-bombed Charles's bar in the previous book and her search for three magical objects for a client. But for the first half of the book, the "new danger" from Alice's past who is mentioned in the blurb is nowhere to be found. We have more of the stupid lust triangle between Sean, Alice, and Charles (although it's not so much a triangle since Alice seems to have made her decision, just Charles is kind of creepy and stalkery (and not in a fun way), but I'm supposed to believe she's into him and fighting it) Also, the book shifts (I'm punny) focus to Sean's pack drama and...
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz....
The book picks up about halfway through when the "trap" mentioned in the blurb is sprung. Unfortunately, we have more Charles and Pack nonsense to get through, but at least it felt like the plot was finally moving. I also felt like the big climactic action at the end was a bit... anti-climactic after some of the events that went before.
I have said it about another book, but I do like how the author clearly plans these out in advance. There were seeds of what is happening in this book planted from the first and second books and I'm pretty sure I spotted a couple of minor loose ends that could start to come unraveled in a future book . While I don't think these books are as good as Kate Daniels (but what is?), I absolutely love the effort the author has put into plotting them out. Kudos to her. It's rare to find that kind of detail in a UF series these days.
But thanks to the slow first half, this book was pretty meh. If the whole thing had the well-done plot and pacing of the second half, I'd have rated this 4 stars, but as it is, I feel like 2.5 is more than fair.

3.5 stars. Alice is .. improving. Sean stepped up in this book and actually put down some rules with his pack but he’s still a softy with Alice. Not a fan of Charles.. he’s wayyyy to manipulative and shady
