Robin L. Rotham is a bestselling, award-winning author of erotic romance. Though her genres run the gamut from contemporary to futuristic and sci-fi, and even fairy tales, Robin's stories all include ménage and BDSM themes. She loves exploring evolving sexualities and the fluidity of D/s dynamics in her writing. Robin is married to a farmer, has three teenagers, and lives in rural Nebraska.
I enjoyed this more than the first book. As I wrote in the review of Alien Overnight, this series is truly a “Sci-fi, naughty erotica”, but it is really also a very “meaty” story with a lot of substance. Lots of sex scenes, but also very depthy characters with tragic pasts and ambiguous futures. The Sci-Fi elements descriptions are also very good.
If you thought that Monica, Kellen and Shauss from Alien Overnight would live together for ever, you are mistaken. Shauss always felt like the third wheel in the relationship and Monica was not submissive enough for his taste. Also Kellen was too Alpha for his taste.
Jasmine King is a Terran (human) with a lethal secret. In the previous book she was almost raped by Shauss when he wanted to interrogate her. She should hate him, instead she is crazy in lust for him.
“The first time I saw Shauss, I knew it was him—and yet not. I felt like I’d been duped. I’d walked through the door expecting this gentle watercolor lover, and then the door slammed behind me and I was trapped in limbo with the darkest, most terrifying man in the world.” She swallowed hard. “It was like a countdown on my life had begun, and the harder I fought it, the more inevitable it became—like he was my destiny, and my destiny was my doom.” “Holy fucking shit. What did you do?” Jasmine smiled weakly. “I kept typing and he walked right by. But from that moment on, I felt like I was living on borrowed time.”
While Jasmine tries to understand her feelings for Shauss, while she undergoes a full on transitioning into her real self, while she is absolutely sure that she is dead woman; Shauss will choose her. He will punish her and protect her and he will teach her a few things about herself.
What I really loved was the fact that Jasmine saved Shauss after she disobeyed him. Strong girl :)
This actually sort of explained a touch more about the whole reality we are in, in this series.
To be honest, I think that is what is kind of putting people off. We are told, we aren't shown the world around. I feel like the characters are very vivid and the whole reality is very grey in comparison.
In this series we have Jasmine, the poor girl in book one that was threatened with rape if she didn't 'talk'. Now, although the author showed that the girl was safe by Kellen revealing it during the scene. Jasmine as a character living in the world really thought she was going to be spoiled that way. Violated.
I feel like these Garathan's have too much power once they get a woman in their hands.
I get it, I do, I get this whole thing. In the end Jasmine dug what was being done to her.
However, she was digging it, while feeling no love in the process. That was the different with what was going on with Monica. She was set, she pushed, and she knew were her pushing would get her.
However, Jasmine finds out who her father is, and what SHE is, then Shauss 'punishes' her and it was really uncomfortable and hard to read. He was cruel to 'scare it out of her', yet he reveals later that he knew the whole time she knew nothing, and he felt horrible. She felt like she has no one was just this slave to do his bidding, and yet he doesn't tell her this until the end? I was a little peeved she wasn't more peeved at him. The whole lifestyle should surround a trust and understanding. The only thing that got Jasmine through that I believe was Tiber being there. He felt horrible, but his softness eased the BS Shauss was dishing out.
At the end of the day I ended up liking Zannen better. And he was supposed to be the scary one. Yet, he, at the end of the day realized he would be too much for Jasmine and deferred to Monica as their second.
Yes, this story was wrapped up in a big pretty hunky alien bow at the end. I just wish Jasmine, even Monica, demanded more from them. Expected more of their husbands, alien or not. The author isn't doing a great job of inventing the reality for me to believe these beautiful amazon women would just submit to this without rules and some limits.
Also, I think the f/f stuff needs more of a disclaimer. It is a bit more than just oh a little scene. Monica makes it totally clear she's gonna be dipping in Jasmine's honey pot whenever she wants lol There is also no M/M warning on the book, I believe that is to keep the same readers reading but at the end of the day you need to warn when you are crossing those genres.
As a whole, the story is sexy, it has some pretty creative BDSM scenes and it pushes the limit. However, for this to be labeled romance, the author needs to do a better job at selling that romance to me.
Holy barbarian aliens from outerspace uber-alpha Dom/sub polyamorous tricked out weirdness.
Someone rec'd this one to me here and they were right- I loved it. :P
(You should read Alien Overnight, book one, before you attempt this one because the author jumps right in where she left off - but I liked Enemy Overnight way better!)
Shauss is a Lieutenant for the alien Garathan forces. He is bonded with a GaraTer, Dr Monica Teague, and Commander Kellen, his superior officer. He's actually Commander Kellen's second to Monica and feels like a third wheel when it is clear that they share a bond with each other than runs deeper than his bond with Monica. His bond with Monica is a more physical one as the Garathani do not have women to meet their reproductive or physical needs. Their story is told in the first installment of the Garathanis' lives, Alien Overnight.
When this story starts Shauss has just interrogated Jasmine King, a close friend of Monica's, after Monica is kidnapped by a high ranking Garathani politician wanting to take Monica as his own. Jasmine had been misled into thinking that Monica did not want to be taken by Kellen and Shauss and Jasmine had simply been trying to help her friend escape their clutches. Little did she know Monica was very much in love with Kellen and leaving was the last thing on her mind. Kellen tells Shauss he can interrogate Jasmine King, a traitor, with whatever means he chooses. Of course, being a Dominant, he has every desire to choose sexual coercion and is about to do so when Jasmine spills the truth.
During the course of the next couple of days Shauss realizes his feelings for Jasmine, and his desire to dominate her sexually, run deep. He is a passionate man, in every sense, and his need to take her as his own overrules his desires to release her. She, and all the breeder females that were going to join the Garathanis in the first installment, are now on the Garathani ship following major disorder and explosions in their compound on Earth. Jasmine will not be released till the traitors are found.
Jasmine confides in Monica and tells her that she is not a Terran (a human) but a Narthani, enemies of the Garathani race. Her Narthani parents, stunted her development when she entered puberty and she had implants, as she grew older, in order to look like a woman. The pheromones that Jasmine is now being exposed to are starting to trigger her transformation into a mature Narthani because she has run out of the hormone blocking nasal spray her father developed for her.
A true submissive, Jasmine can't help but fall under the tempting spell that Shauss has weaved for her. She already felt an overwhelming attraction but, without the help of her nasal blocker, she's overwhelmed. Of course, things don't go smoothly and suspicions arise as to how information is getting out and who caused the earth explosions which have now ceased peace talks between the Terrans and the Garathanis. When traumatic events occur on the ship the finger of suspicion falls to Jasmine as she has not earned their trust after the Monica kidnapping incident.
She and Shauss end up having to go and see Monica, for an emergency, when Shauss' sexual appetite (which he seems utterly unable to control with Jasmine) causes her to bleed when his spur (which is released when mating) has stabbed her and opened up her nook (which she shouldn't have since she's a Terran... isn't she?!?!). When Monica and a crying Jasmine talk about what happened Shauss is listening in with his 'second', Tiber. Tiber is an older Garathani doctor whose wife and daughter were killed by attacks years prior. He is a kind man and wants to protect Jasmine but is shocked to hear her discussing her Narathani heritage and transitioning with Monica. Both Monica and Jasmine are now being punished. Kellen punishes Monica for keeping something so important from him. Shauss goes overboard and tortures Jasmine sexually, taking out his more twisted sexual needs on her in order to extract information. Jasmine, though, loves it all. She loves him, she wants him to dominate her in every way.
Theirs is a journey of self discovery. Shauss introduces the Garathani men to desires that they never saw fit to explore before. I really found the story enjoyable. I felt sad for Shauss after the first book. He knew he was playing second fiddle to Kellen, in Monica's heart. He knew he would never be foremost in her thoughts, ever. In Jasmine he found his emotional and sexual equal. In Tiber he finds a man who fulfills his need to dominate and submit. Through them both he is able to finally submit to feelings he could never share. Loved Shauss and Tiber. Wished Jasmine could have been stronger but she fits in so well with them I will overlook that little detail.
This was an okay book. It follows straight on the heels on the previous Alien Overnight which I enjoyed. It was well written and the plot made sense but I didn't like the dynamics of the relationships as well.
I think that these are things that probably don't bother other readers but they matter to me and lowered my star rating, but here they are: I didn't like the way that the BDSM element took over the sci fi plot. It just seemed out of place to me. You've just found out that the woman you're married to is an enemy alien. You've promised to never hurt her so you immediately declare her an enemy and have buttsex with her in front of 18 random horny aliens. And you humiliate her while doing it. So the story is very interesting about whether she is going to come out as an alien or maintain the pretense she is human then the BDSM takes over. I didn't feel the love here really.
And that element seemed so human that I wondered why if the author wanted to include it she didn't make it somehow part of the alien culture but instead she used human terminology and human understanding of how BDSM relationships work and told us that the hero had learned all this stuff on Earth. And I'm left thinking where did my sci fi plot go?
Another thing that I sort of knew I wouldn't really like going in is that there is both FF and MM interaction. I prefer my reads to be MF or MFM only.
This book was the culmination of a story arc started in Alien Overnight, although it does focus on a different romantic grouping. I thought the world building was creative and enjoyed this book better than the first one.
My complaint has to do with the number of, "What? How did that happen? I thought he/she.....", moments in the story. There were several times motivations switched so quickly, I wanted to check back to see if I'd missed something. Also there were times when everything was a bit too convenient, where the story forced the action as opposed to the characters.
When I was very young and watched Warner Brother's cartoons on Saturday morning - oh, okay, I wasn't all that young! - there was a series where the sheep dog clocked into his job watching the sheep, then sat there until the nasty coyote tried to steal one or more of them. In one (or more) cartoons, there was a reveal at the end when the characters zipped themselves out of one animal suit after another to reveal their true nature as coyote, sheepdog or sheep, - rather funny to a (not so young) child. Well, the BDSM in this book felt like that at times - all about the roles and rather contrived as well. Without giving anything away, there was a lot of, "you sub, me Dom", going on (Oh, and did I mention this is a menage? No? Well, it's a menage. ;P), until the end when one of the characters revealed their actual identity was a switch! Gasp! O.O
The story was entertaining, if not always logical (or even sci/fi logical which allows quite a bit of leeway) and the ending was satisfying, even though a bit contrived.
When last we left our double penetrating heroes, things were chaotic. This book backs us up a bit (not literally, because the backdoor stuff comes later) story-wise and throws us right in the thick of things as Jasmine nearly kills herself by trusting the wrong alien. I liked seeing things from her perspective. She came across as bitchy and cold in book 1 but, really, she was doing what she thought was the right thing. It wasn't her fault that she trusted someone who shouldn't have been trusted. Hey. Come to think of it, that's kind of a theme with her, isn't it?
Right. So, Jasmine is forced into a situation that she's entirely unprepared for. She's overwhelmed by Shauss and he's just the right sort of dominating to get her motor revving. Which throws her off kilter because she's trying SO hard to deny her feelings for him. I liked that they had a frank discussion about her inability to orgasm (and that the reason why she couldn't made sense given her physiology) and that Shauss then set out to find away around this problem. You have to respect a guy who gives things his all like that!
I LOVED that Monica broached the issue about why the Garathani males never turned to one another sexually. It put a whole lot of thoughts in Shauss' head and when he eventually decided to embrace his dominant side completely it was sex-ay.
Overall, this was the sort of fun, sexy, double penetrating alien ride that a sexy sci-fi lover will adore. You get all the action you can handle plus a set of restraints.
This book I enjoyed more than book #1 which was really good. The dom/sub wasn't as cruel to me, even though we did get glimpses of Monica's still being so extreme.
Jasmine's back on the spaceship and scared out of her gourd because she's not who they think she is. She's not out to get them, but they may be out to get her. Shauss has become her primary mate and chooses Tiber as his second. The third is kind of flip flopping on who it will be. I loved the ending (well except for the necklace part which to me is degrading but then I'm not into S&M myself). Wonderful book. Hope there's a third on the way.
Bought it the day it came out, read like a mad woman. Sequel to Alien Overnight (and I think I caught the seeds for yet another title in this line). Good read, even better the second time around.
If you like the idea of polyamorous relationships, a lot of Dominance and Submission, sadism, male on male and female on female, then you might want to explore this book. While this book explores the drier sides of some of these types of relationships, that is not all this book has going for it. The story itself is almost enough to keep the reader’s attention.
This book explores all of the above and is preceded by “Alien Overnight”, the first book in what appears to be a dualogy by Ms . . Aliens have finally visited Earth. The Garthani have nearly been destroyed, their women s numbers have been decimated and the Garthani are looking for viable candidates from Earths women to give their men some sexual satisfaction and to replace with cross-breed children, their numbers.
This book contains some interesting characters. Nevertheless, as a sci-fi, this book would never quite make the cut. However, combine the space theme with the “sex-slave’ type of idea and you have an enjoyable read. One of the things that bothers me about this book is how the big old sadistic, dominating, Alpha male turns into such a mewling baby when He is captured and threatened...I usually enjoy when character's step out of their comfort zones, but in this book the change of personality didn't ring true.
Yowza! There was a little bit of everything in this book: M/F, F/F, M/M, M/M/F, BDSM and lots of public sex. Some of it was hot but other parts just had me bug my eyes out.
In a sense it's too bad this was erotica because the sci-fi plot was interesting and well thought out. I think I would have liked to know more about the struggles between the three races without all the sex and domination mixed in.
Well, pre-surprise M/M coupling about 40 pages from the end, I enjoyed this book. Nice story, nice flow, then, suddenly, SURPRISE! So, before that little graphic surprise, I liked it. I'd probably give it a 3 or 4. However, I do not like surprise parties, surprise gifts, or surprise buttsex, so it gets a 2.
I'm not against M/M couplings, I'd just like to be forewarned.
I loved this book. I normally don't read e-books but if you like erotic fiction and don't mind a little guy on guy and Dom action this is a great book and a very creative story. I find the spur nook an interesting touch.
Great book.. Great book series.. Great adventure with lots of thrills.. Great love story.. Very well written.. can't wait for next book in the series..
I had read a post on a blog somewhere about this author and her new release, FRANKENDOM, and it just sounded so interesting and out there that I searched for it on Amazon. It's a Kindle only however, and since I prefer actual books to ebooks, I purchased the cheapest of her other books that was available in bound format. Thus, I read ENEMY OVERNIGHT, which is actually the sequel to ALIEN OVERNIGHT. I don't normally read series books out of order (other than category romances), but while the book references events from the first book it's still a basically stand alone story.
And it was definitely interesting and out there. Not to mention just plain fucked up weird. Not to mention highly hot and entertaining.
I did have a little trouble in the beginning with Shauss being the hero, because he was so incredibly cruel to Jasmine at first (and again later though at that time he believed she was a traitor and had betrayed him). I gathered that in the first book Jasmine played a rather large role in the storyline, having made a huge mess of things for the other characters and caused some problems. Okay, so I do sort of wish I'd read the first book first.
I've read a bit of erotica, and I'm not easily shocked when reading, but this was new territory for me. I mean at one point my jaw dropped and I could not believe what I was reading. So, you know, it's not for the chaste or faint of heart...all those Fifty Shades of Gray fans would probably have a heart attack.
The characters are well drawn. If you know me, you know I like stories that are character driven over plot driven. I like to get to know the characters, be inside their heads, and the author does a good job at making them seem real. I've not read much that dealt with aliens, and despite the physical descriptions I still had a little trouble picturing how Shauss and the others looked. I kind of got this picture in my head of creatures similar to Planet of the Apes – I don't really know why or how and at first I had to keep concentrating and thinking about how they were described to get that picture out of my head.
The storyline was interesting and integral to the plot, and not just back story to weave the sex scenes together. In fact, while there were some sexual situations, there was no actual sex until about halfway through the book. But once the sex started, it was scorching.
The last quarter of the book, I could not put it down and sat up past my bedtime to finish it. This author is now on my list of authors who's entire backlist I must now track down and read.
Who but Robin Rotham can combine worlds and peoples into an erotic sci-fi romantic suspense tale that leaves you breathless in more ways than one. We have hunka-hunka burning love aliens with TWO weenies (and not the Vienna kind but the plump-when-you-cook-em on steroids variety. Whoo-ee! Double the pleasure, double the fun. We have two interstellar races fighting each other with the poor people of Earth caught in the middle. And finally, we have the Terran (Earth) women, the lust interest of the doubly blessed Garathan males. Since the Garathan female population was decimated by a virus Earth females have been in hot demand and recruited to replace and repopulate the species. The "copulation candidates" must accept 2 or 3 as mates and acquiesce to their every desire. Poor things (read: lucky b**ches.) "Enemy Overnight" is the second book in the series and can be read as a stand alone but will be enjoyed (and understood) more if preceded by Alien Overnight. Be warned! It is super nova hot and pushes some envelopes but is a thoroughly enjoyable read. Keep 'em coming, Robin.
Sigh, I tried I really did but this book is awful. I knew there was going to be problems when the main guy threatens to rape her to get information from her, then she's forced to mate later on with her would-be rapist and of course loves it and him. Then they think she's a spy and she's gang raped and loves it of course cause doesn't everyone? The men, I didn't like any of them really they are all basically women-haters since they came from a woman dominated society and they were basically slaves or sub servant so they treat all women like that. The lesbian scenes were interesting, I could see more of a connection to them than Shauss or whatever his name was, I could care less. The woman was annoying, her lying all the time caught up to her. If she was more truthful at the beginning it would have been better for her. Maybe they all deserved each other, I don't care any more and wont be reading any more of this which is sad since I love these mars need women trope.
This series is so addicting. I'm totally addicted. I love everything about it - sexy alien crack (yes, sexy, over-sized aliens have some kind of crack in them), the dubious consent, the feisty heroines, the interesting plot lines, the little bit of mystery and suspense, action. It is just awesome. The BDSM feels authentic, and it certainly turned me on. The M/M scenes are super hot, as is the menage. And there are very emotional parts too. I had a few heart squeezes as well. I highly recommend this one to anyone who enjoys science fiction with lots of sexy and fun story.
I won this book through a contest on Ms. Rotham's website (http://robinlrotham.com) and I have to admit it was on my purchase list before I won it. This book had me hooked from the very first page! It is Book 2 of her Overnight series, and should be read after Book 1, Alien Overnight. Without giving anything away, let me say that her characters are well-developed and the plots just flow. Her descriptions are crisp and colorful, and the sarcastic humor that each character shows at various times throughout the book had me almost gasping with laughter. The sex scenes were hot! This book combines several of my favorite genres (romance, erotica, science fiction, space opera) beautifully.
And I thought her books couldn't get any more stranger. There were some real WTF moments in there. As much as I enjoyed it there were a few downers. I didn't like the rules that the alien race have. The male leads could get away with being so cruel to the heroines and they just had to stand by and let it happen. The punishment was just for the males sick minds. I don't know how to feel about it. There were so many conflicting elements and yet I stayed glued to the page, only wanting more. It's not easy to be hooked so much by a book.
This was Shauss and Jasmine and the doctor (Tiber? IIRC. I read these a few days ago and my mind is moosh at the moment).
Totally sexy, but there is also MAN ON MAN happening. If you are not down with that in your swirl, step aside and read no further, because the streams totally cross in this one. It was hot, though. I dug it!
Anyhow, you kinda need to read the first one, IMO, to get this one, but I recommend you do that anyhow. ;)
Man I don't even remember which one this is. The one with the chick who gave birth to twins hooking up with the twink and the older dude ALIENS? OOOOOKAAAAAY.
Merged review:
I have some serious problems with aliens in romance novels
I don't even know where to start here with this one. Or this entire series. How about how this is about a woman who has crazy BDSM sex RIGHT AFTER HAVING GO THROUGH ULTRAPUBERTY IN ONE NIGHT NO THANK YOU.
Loved the second book to the series as much as the first. There was a lot more mystery and suspense in this one. Really can't wait for the third of the series. Only thing i wish i could have been included (even though it is not Monica's story in this one) was Monica's thoughts and feeling during her punishment/claiming of her second mate. Would love to have read that :P
Oh Jasmine so busted. Though she isn't what she think she is and she will fall in total love with who she needs she has a rough time of it and cant seem to hold on. Love is the best and she has the best of it- even if she doesn't know who everyone is. its a fantastic read and I hope some of you will enjoy it as I have.
(★★★½... maybe???) Read this years ago; remember the general storyline but not much else. Probably was like most of my other RR reads—enjoyable enough but nothing warranting a "wow" or "OMG".
A great continuation of the first book it was erotic and had intrigue and love a truly wonderful race of aliens I wouldn't mind meeting . I find it truly sad that you can not buy this book on kindle anymore it should be reissued
