In my defense!

description

MC: 1 – Ray Clancy – Disgraced cop turned PI

MC 2 - Andrew Shay – Waiter

The story started ok, building, I am there telling myself, finally a great serial killer mm book. YAY!

Everything should have worked, we have a disgraced cop turn PI - Ray, a serial killer on the loose and Andy a younger guy/serial killer target as the love interest. See? This combo makes my blood boil, stomach churn and everything in between. The story had that film noir, AE feel. I was an excited baby peanut.

description

Then! THEN! The MCs meet, i.e Ray the PI meet the potential serial killer victim/love interest - Andy and boy DISASTER! UGH! It is freaking bam boom! kiss, Insta! Don’t get me wrong, I like me some Insta when it is done right, here, it was all ugh! I couldn’t feel the zing connection at all, I wish it could have at least been Insta- Lust, or they could have just stuck to investigating.

Speaking of investigation, where was it? You are hunting a serial killer, PLEASE! just HUNT!!!

description

I read mystery to follow along on the whodunnit, if it is sprinkled with a little bit of a side romance, i am a happy camper.

There are still good cops out there, right? I found it hard to believe that a witness to a serial killer murder would be ignored by the police, these guys form units to hunt down serial killers, sometimes it takes years and they take any help they can get. It was a poor set up to let Ray take lead on the case.

The writing style was a little off, especially the transition between the chapters, it was hard to tell keep track of who was talking, and it was all telling and no showing.

Anyhoo don’t mind me, maybe I have read/ watched so many mystery books /TV shows that I have become immuned, I knew the serial killer the moment they appeared on page.

The premise was all set, but I feel the execution failed.

Three men entangled in a game of cat and mouse...

Ray Clancy, a disgraced cop with a shady past, now working as a PI and still obsessed with a murder case he couldn't solve, finds himself back in the game when the killer suddenly resumes his killing spree by murdering young gay men with ties to a club.
.

Andy Shay, a young waiter in a fancy restaurant, breaks in on someone murdering his roommate in the most gruesome way and suddenly finds himself in the crosshairs of a serial killer.

A delusional cold-blooded murderer- although delusional puts it mildly and cray-cray to the highest degree would be more appropriate - seems to take personal interest in both men, although his end game seems to remain a mystery.
Ähnliches Foto

When Andy reaches out to Ray for protection, Ray realizes how much he missed the hunt, but suddenly it's not his highest incentive anymore. A certain young man is well on his way to steal his heart and changing objective to keeping him save is now a matter of the heart. Easier said than done, though, because the killer plays dirty and has some nasty tricks up his sleeve and Ray is forced to pull some strings by calling in old favors while doing his damnedest not to get killed in the process...

This was my first book by either of the authors and overall I liked it. Both main characters were flawed, vulnerable and had quirks, in other words they didn't represent the typical superhero image at first glance, but both guys possessed an inner strength I appreciated here more than a missing sixpack. I didn't even mind the age-gap of twenty years which is usually a bit too much for me, but these guys were simply made for each other. The mystery part was truly engaging and at the beginning I couldn't shake the feeling that I would be reading the script of a film noir, which in retrospect is probably utter nonsense, but the atmosphere gave off a certain vibe I can't explain any better.

I had some minor niggles, though, like first person POV (yes, of both characters), but that's usually one of my pet peeves and it's always hard for me to get used to it and Andy seemed sometimes not really consistent and a bit contradictory to me. He went from damsel in distress to 'leave-me-alone-I-can-protect-myself' and right back in the blink of an eye. Of course I don't mind character development, but I couldn't really buy the back and forth here.

I would have rounded it up or even given it solid 4 stars, though, if it weren't for the ending. I could smell the outcome from miles away - not necessarily the identy of the perp, although I had a hunch when I was halfway through - but how it would go down. It was way too predictable for me and the showdown towards the end was so B-movie it had my eyes in a rolling spin.

These are only personal preferences, though, and I'm once again in the minority here, so I hope you will enjoy it to the fullest.

After being framed for taking a bribe, ex-cop, Ray Clancy, has been spending his time following cheating spouses. He still can't forget the cases he was working on and how the police were not taking it seriously. When the murders start popping up again and there's a witness, server, Andy Shay contacts Ray for help. The attraction between these two is immediate but Andy's life is in danger and Ray is still trying to solve the murders.

I enjoyed this for the most part. I loved grumpy Ray and sweet Andy and loved them as a couple. I did feel like the romance took a backseat to the murder/mystery but in the sense of one minute Ray was saying how nothing could happen and he needed to be professional. And the next, they were kissing and having sex and feelings involved shortly after. I wanted a little more build up in their relationship. It was kind of abrupt in my opinion.

I was left guessing until near the end who all was involved in the murders and how. The murders are gruesome just be warned. There's several side characters I'd like to see get a book. But overall, it was a good read for me. I still love how Dabney incorporates every day characters in shape and body type.

This was a wonderful treat. It was suspenseful, intense and a page turner. I liked both MCs, their individual characteristics complementing each others. There is insecurity and vulnerability in both, and their relationship is not certain but in a midst of danger they find peace in each others' arms.

Ray Clancy is an ex-cop who was ousted from police force by another dirty cop. He is trying to put his life back together. He was good at what he did, and he misses the thrill of the chase, that adrenaline that came with putting a criminal away. Now he is eking his living as a local PI and detests every second of it. Prior to him involuntary leaving police he was investigating a series of murders that had young gay men slaughtered in a horrible fashion, and now after nearly half a year the killer is back again worse than before. A young man stumbles in his path seeking help and he does not know what will kill him first - the case or a possible broken heart.

Andy Shay is a server in a posh restaurant, he is making a small life for himself with his roommate Francis. There is not much but it's theirs. On one fateful night he finds himself smack dab in the middle of a murder case that puts his life in danger but brings him to a man who might be his future. His life was never easy and it's hard for him to believe that someone so self confident and handsome as Ray could be interested in him - an awkward and lanky man.

Ray and Andy try to untangle the threads of this case that will point to direction they never expect, Ray uses all of his cunning intelligence and a vast array of connections both legal and not so much to find out who is the crazy man that is stalking him. The truth is never easy or what they presume, it's shocking and frightening. This case just shows how much we don't know the people we deal with, how much is hidden behind a friendly smile and benign facial expression. So many innocents die because of a sick obsession, and when Andy's life hangs in the balance Ray unleashes hell on those responsible.

I enjoyed it a lot. It was the imperfect characters that were easy to relate to and a wonderful murder mystery that made the book awesome. Plus the secondary characters made an impression, provided humor and sarcasm, sassy banter and showed that loyalty can withstand years of separation and even change of sides. A wonderful read by two wonderful talented authors! A job well done! I highly recommend it.

Do you know that feeling when it seems that you read a different book than everybody else? That always makes me doubt myself but no, everybody else loves it, and I don't. That's the plain and simple truth. Mind you, that doesn't mean that I'm right and all the four and five stars are wrong but still, here we are. It was ok. Two stars. My opinion.

It always seems a little unfair to compare different books but I think I might have enjoyed "The Hunt" more if I hadn't just a couple of days ago finished the latest installment in Cordelia Kingsbridge's excellent Seven of Spades series because frankly, that sets the bar pretty high with regard to obsessed serial killers. Still, I doubt that it would have wowed me even if that weren't the case.

The tone is a supposed to be noir - cynical older detective who has been wronged by the powers that be, develops tender, protective feelings for the damsel in distress yadda yadda. That this has been done a million times before does not necessarily mean that it has to be bad but it would have needed a lot more spice to make this same old recipe work for me once more (btw I think there should be a law against a character thinking to themselves that they are too old for this shit. Srsly.).

Long story short, too much telling instead of showing. There was hardly any actual investigation, you know where people find clues and stuff, and deduce whodunnit. I mean, I was pretty sure who the killer was because we basically get told but Ray ignores that because it doesn't make sense to him and guess what? He's right. The motivation of the killer didn't make a lick of sense to me either.

Add to that insta-love-add-hot-water-and-stir. Andrew just goes to Ray and starts following him around like a puppy and wham! they are in true lurve. I didn't really feel the characters and their relationship at all.

Many people enjoyed the book and maybe you will as well but it didn't really work for me. Sorry, book.

It's me not the book, I'm almost sure. Read till 20%, couldn't connect so I left it at that.

Why? The writing, it felt really amateur, the beginning of almost all sentences started in "I did this" "I went" "I saw", there were a lot of repetitive words and I don't know why but I couldn't flow with the story, my mind stopped every time I saw an error. So yeah, couldn't.

It seemed interesting, a shame I couldn't connect enough. 😪😪❤

I was so invested in this story, especially the ending. It was intense and suspenseful but I can't say for sure why I enjoyed it so much. The romance wasn't the greatest I've read, cute but I didn't feel likethe authors did a great job I showing why they loved each other so much and there wasn't much of a chemistry as in other books I've read. I was more in for the serial killer element and the plot twist had me glued to the audiobook.

Huh. Talk about disappointing. I was all set to like this book because the blurb sounded really interesting. And let me preface this by saying I don't mind insta-love AT ALL, but this just didn't ring true. I felt no connection between the MC's. In fact, I felt no emotion while reading this book. The love scenes weren't emotional or sexy to me. Even the descriptions of the killings were unemotional.

I've not read any books by either of these authors, so maybe they aren't for me. I don't know. But I just did not connect with this book on any level.

3.5⭐

I liked this book (it was my first time with both those authors) and I found it very enjoyable, it took me a couple of hours to finish it. The mystery is involving and the pace is good. The mcs are a little too much 2d-ish, they are portrayed only superficially and the romance, lovely, isn't deeply shown (and also all the sex is off page, and that's ok).
I would recommend this one if you love good mysteries with a touch of romance and a lovely HEA!

And I'd love to read Bradford's story, pretty please authors!!!

The Hunt is a strong romantic suspense, in fact I find myself more intrigued with the serial killer case from the beginning. Ray is the hardened by life ex-cop who had seen too much and tired of all the bullshit, but he is relentless about solving the murders of the young gay men in the city. Andy is a server who witnessed the murder of his roommate and decided to call upon Ray to help him.

I love the suspense plot of the story, which detailed Ray's investigative work and the paranoia that cloud Andy's life. Andy is desperately in need of help and Ray is more than willing to assist. I read the entire book in one night, trying to figure out who-done-it because I knew most of the time the culprit is someone we know.

As for the romance angle, I didn't really connect with both Ray and Andy in the first half of the book. I find there is lack of sexual tension and chemistry. They sorta just came together without much fanfare and their first kiss kinda caught me off guard. But as the story went on, their relationship started to grow on me and of course I enjoy seeing Ray went all heroic trying to safe Andy and all that. I also like the supporting characters, especially Bradford and Ritchie. I hope they will get their own book and provide us with glimpse into Ray and Andy's life in future.

This was a great balance of mystery, suspense, and romance for me. While instalove isn’t usually my favorite – the sort of forced proximity and highly stressful situations worked here. I liked both Ray & Andy as individuals and as a couple. I’m a huge fan of age gap and this 45-year-old former detective turned Private Investigator and 28-year-old waiter duo complemented each other well.

Their relationship was low angst and all the drama came from hunting for and being hunted by a serial killer. I liked the twists and turns in the investigation and that I didn’t figure out who was involved until the characters did. Enjoyable story.

Narration:
Casting Tor Thom as Ray and Kirt Graves as Andy was absolutely perfect. Plus, they each did their opposite characters and the secondary people well. I really enjoyed both their performances. Great listen.

***** We have older guy Ray, ex-cop, now P.I. who is still interested in the gruesome serial murders. Ray...

A recent witness and hard working nice young man,
Andy,

isn't happy with the police protection and calls Ray.
Now they are both swept up in the process, the new murders, and more are coming.

It's a tense investigation, with trouble on every corner. The killer is leaving messages.

Is this wacko after Andy? Ray calls in some favors from the old days, and things get complicated.

This is a thrill ride, and we see tough guys, cops with attitude, and Ray trying to keep Andy alive. Soon, Andy and Ray are hot and heavy, and each guy is loving every minute of their sexy times. New evidence, plus old evidence brought to light.

We get a stakeout, problems, rescue and justice. We are guessing until the end.

Highly recommended. ENJOY !

Sorry to say this one didn't work for me at all.

The romance was too forced for me. They met and fell in love but I blinked and missed the how and when.

The crime parts were so muddled with bad guys that were good but bad and good guys that were bad. While I'm sure the climatic ending might of worked in an action movie, in a story I was just left groaning and shaking my head at the simplicity of it all.

Seeing each chapter through alternate between Ray and Andy mostly OK as long as I remembered whose head I was in.

But overall this failed to draw me in and instead I was bored and interspersed every few chapters with a few rounds of FB games to keep me from totally zoning out.

This was an enjoyable read. A killer on the loose, lots of solid characters.. but just lacked a little depth for me. This really had the potential to be a “hold your breath” thriller. An easy read if you like a taste of crime 😊

A Joyfully Jay review.

4 stars

The Hunt is an entertaining mystery/suspense story that grabbed me right away. We are thrown into the action from the start and can really feel Andy’s fear as barely escapes the murderer and knows he is likely in the killer’s sights. The mystery unfolds nicely and I liked the way we see Ray work his back channels since he is not officially on the case. Ray has a checkered past and it was kind of fun to see him team up with the bad guys for the greater good. The story is interesting and well developed, and while it lost a bit of steam for me at the end, overall I found it a great thriller and entertaining mystery.

Andy and Ray make a nice couple and I liked their dynamic. While this is clearly Ray’s world and he is not only older, but more experienced, I like that Andy can mostly hold his own. He joins in with Ray, helping to investigate and being a part of the case. These guys are both lonely, both feeling a little out of place, and so it’s nice to see how they fit together. The romantic development takes somewhat of a backseat to the mystery side, but I did feel like we get enough to believe in their happy ending.

Ray Clancy was framed for something he didn’t do because of his past. None of his colleagues on the force backed him up, so he could do nothing else but take a deal and continue as a PI, leaving behind a serial killer case he was looking into.

Andrew Shay a server at a very nice restaurant and finally out of debt, returns home to find his roommate brutally murdered and the killer still inside. The police doesn’t do anything and they don’t even acknowledge that there is a serial killer on the loose. Andy decides to look into it and finds the lead detective of the case and contacts him to ask for help.

Andy keeps receiving threats from the killer, and Ray is trying to gather more info and try to help Andy as much as he can. Along the way, their relationship develops and they fit so well together. There is an age gap between them about 20 or so years.

The mystery was very well done, the authors had me guessing and I failed miserably, I was so surprised at the turn of events at the end. The side characters where fun to read and I wish they could have their own book.

It was an easy read. Fast and interesting all the way through.

I highly recommend it to the people that love mysteries!

Review from 2019

I've given this a B/D+ for the narration (Graves/Thom respectively) and a C- for content at AudioGals.

Both J.M. Dabney and Davidson King are new-to-me authors, and I confess I picked up their latest collaboration, The Hunt, mostly because Kirt Graves is one of the narrators. The other, Tor Thom, is a name I’ve seen cropping up more and more frequently of late, and I wanted to try something of his – but the jury’s still out. My initial impression, from the first few minutes, was not at all favourable owing to a lot of audible breathing and Mr. Thom’s low-pitched almost-whisper; and had I not been reviewing this audiobook, I may well have set it aside never to return. But I persevered, and was able to at least make it to the end without ripping out my earphones and stomping on them.

The Hunt opens with Detective Ray Clancy arriving at the gruesome scene of the murder of a young man who was mutilated post mortem. This is the third such killing he’s seen and the Medical Examiner at the scene privately agrees with Ray that they’ve got a serial killer on their hands that, for some reason, the higher ups don’t want to acknowledge. But before Ray can get started on an investigation, his captain sends him back to the precinct – to a meeting with Internal Affairs… and his suspension. Accused of taking bribes and with no way of proving otherwise, Ray eventually quits the force and sets up as a PI.

Some six months or so after this, Andy Shay, a server at one of the city’s most upscale restaurants, arrives home after his shift one night to find his roommate dead and the murderer still on the premises. Running for his life, he calls 911 and then heads for a local diner where he can wait until the police arrive. Unable to return to his apartment – and not wanting to return anyway given what he witnessed there – his colleague, Elise, offers to let him stay with her, an offer Andy accepts gratefully. Although the police had taken on board Andy’s concern about the killer having seen his face, he knows, deep down, that they didn’t really take him seriously, which both worries him and pisses him off. When he sees the murder being reported on the news as the work of a possible serial killer, Andy does a bit of Googling and decides to see if he can get in touch with the man listed as being the lead detective on the previous murder cases, Raymond Clancy. He can find nothing indicating Clancy is still with the force; instead, he can only find reference to a PI by that name, but decides to contact him anyway.

News of this latest murder serves to further convince Ray that whoever was killing and mutilating young, gay men has started up again after a few months of nothing. He can’t work out why the big-wigs in law enforcement are still refusing to admit they’ve got a serial murderer on their hands, and determines to start looking into the case on his own, knowing the police are no closer to solving the crimes than when he was still on the force –and that the killer isn’t going to stop until they’re caught. When he meets Andy Shay, Ray becomes even more determined to solve the case – and to protect the young man whose guileless charm very quickly starts to get under his skin.

The Hunt is a very run-of-the-mill, predictable mystery featuring a grizzled, cynical cop and a younger (by twenty years) ‘damsel-in-distress’ type that’s been done countless times before. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing – tropes are tropes for a reason after all – but the authors tread a very familiar path with nothing new to say or offer in terms of plot or characters. In fact both those are tissue-paper thin with lots of inconsistencies along the way; for instance, Andy goes from being (rightly) terrified to then insisting on being left alone because he can take care of himself and back again while Ray, supposedly an experienced detective, fails to follow up on a lead, even when the identity of the killer is flagged up to him, simply because it doesn’t make sense to him. There’s hardly any investigating going on, lots of telling rather than showing, and the romance (and I use the term loosely) is of the insta-love variety, with little chemistry between the characters – and the sex scenes take place mostly “off screen”.

As I mentioned at the beginning, Tor Thom is a new-to-me narrator whose name I’ve been seeing around more and more often over the past year or so. (He has 84 titles listed at Audible all recorded since the end of 2016). Unfortunately though, the poor impression of his performance I gleaned at the beginning of this audiobook wasn’t changed very much by the time I reached the end. The audible breathing I so disliked at the start abated somewhat, but I found the rest of his performance to be pretty uninspired; he sounds bored and his almost monotone delivery spoke to a disconnect from his material. I liked his narration best when he was performing Andy’s dialogue, because he became a little more animated and he changed the pitch and timbre of his voice to differentiate him effectively and to (I’m assuming) suggest something of the youthful tone used by his co-narrator. When it came to differentiating the other characters, however, Mr.Thom was less successful. Almost all the other male characters’ dialogue is voiced at an even lower pitch than he employs for Ray and the narrative, and apart from coming dangerously close to making them sound like Eeyore (in fact, one of them sounds just like Eeyore!) it just sounded strained and forced.

Kirt Graves, on the other hand, was very good. His light tenor worked perfectly to depict Andy’s youth, and even though he didn’t have much to work with in terms of characterisation, he conveys Andy’s emotions and insecurities really well. His differentiation and pacing are fine, although he does struggle a bit to lower the pitch of his voice sufficiently for Ray’s dialogue, and sometimes ends up sounding a bit… off.

At time of writing, I have a couple of audiobooks on my review pile featuring Tor Thom (one of them pairing him with Kirt Graves again) and I’m hoping that perhaps I’ll hear an improvement. Wish me luck.

4 Romantic suspense ✨

Ray Clancy is a hardened ex-cop in his 40s. He was framed in a bribe case and forced out of the FBI. Now he is working as PI, moreover, he had a shady background and even shadier friends. He is still hung on his last unfinished case when the killing of young people began again.

Andy is a 25year old server, he saw the dead and mutilated body of his friend and got entangled in the ' Hunt'. I was not able to piece the whole mystery puzzle till the end.

The attraction between Ray and Andy was instant but the relationship development was slow and adorable.

Holy thriller, batman…. this one was a doozy!

Ok, now I’m a huge Dabney fan, so I knew this one was going to be a good one, but it’s so different from her other reads, I didn’t know what to expect when she collabed with someone I’d never read before. So, we started out with Ray, who was a good detective in a cesspool of shady people. Being framed for a crime that he didn’t commit, I’ve gotta say, wasn’t a good start for me…. If you read any of my reviews, you’ve gotta know my biggest pet peeve is terrible people getting away with being terrible people, and it seemed like this happened ….. keep reading!

After taking a deal and losing his spot on the force, he starts a PI practice…. It allowed him to stay in the type of work he was in before, I reckon. He got to keep his gun, and it kept him out of jail at least… but I kept my eye on Captain Green, I didn’t trust him from the very beginning and had you asked me if he had a hand in the business what was going on in the book, I’d have said definitely. I was really kept in suspense with the who-dun-it and the why.

See, Ray was smack in the middle of a serial case where young men were getting mutilated and murdered when he got fired. As one could imagine, it was hard to let go, but he didn't have much choice. He did have a friend or two that let him in on some details, but enough to keep track of what the serial killer was up to…. Other than the killing of course. That’s when he meets Andy…..

Andy came home from work to witness his roommate, and best friend murdered and being mutilated. The police (Captain Green), wasn’t doing much about it, not even informing the public that a serial killer was in their hood. Why they kept denying it, I still have no idea… but, Andy was scared, and nobody seemed to care that he was on the killer’s radar….I mean, he did see the guy…. That irked me, another black mark against Green… seriously, how did he still have a job at the end?

Anyway, he called Ray, having gotten his name by doing a little digging himself, and Ray, attracted to Andy, but also needing to solve this case, agreed to help…. It’s a confusing runaround, trying to gather evidence and motive and any link at all that would give them a clue who was terrorizing the young men of New West City… Ray used some of his old contacts that he knew growing up, and I had to admit, even though they were criminals….well-known criminals, I kinda loved them anyway… Especially Bradford and Richie. I wouldn’t mind a book about either one of them!

And like I said, by the end of it, when everything came together, I was surprised and no longer confused, and I felt like my heart was going to jump right out of my chest. It’s a real page turner for sure and if you enjoy murder mysteries with some man on man love thrown in…. don’t pass this one up. There are some typical Dabney errors, like, no question marks when one is obviously needed, but if you’ve read any of her books at all, you’ll know she’s allergic to the question mark. It doesn’t bother me in the slightest… but I know it’ll be a common complaint. So heads up…

Overall…I really, really enjoyed it! Sweet ending….would most definitely recommend.
5 stars from me!

Audiobook Narration was 5 terrific stars!

The plot was an unsatisfying 4 stars~
The story started off amazing and immediately I got sucked into the whodunit vibe. The tension, the intensity and the betrayal Ray received had me on edge. Andy's charming character, his relationship with his best friend/housemate and his strength to survive through the days was admirable. I love both characters since the start. But when the two MCs meet, I feel like the focus got blurred at some point. I didn't get enough satisfaction from the crime-solving and the romance. It felt as if the authors were juggling between romance and crime and just could not decide where to go. Even so, I was still on edge throughout the book anticipating to see who the criminal was at the end. And my dear readers, I did not expect that ending at all!

The Hunt is a good book and I did enjoy reading it however the storyline felt very rushed and crammed into just a little over 200 words which is why I’ve given it 3 stars.
A lot of questions were unanswered too for example; did Gabin and Augustine reconcile? Also there were quite a few spelling mistakes which threw me off at times.

Altogether this book would have been a lot better if it was longer.

This one was just okay for me. It was actually pretty good until towards the end when "the plan" became part of the plot. It was just idiotic and I can't believe that a former cop would go along with a plan like that. It was cliched and everything from that point happened exactly as you'd expect with the ridiculous "plan". I also think the author couldn't decide if she wanted the MC to be a bit of "grey character" with a rebel side or a strong, heroic cop because it seemed to go back and forth and I didn't really believe the character. In one scene he has all these really strong morals and in the next he's friends with and working with mobsters and has no issue with it. He just seemed to be all over the place. Then there was the whole investigation part - it just seemed far fetched and unbelievable. The killer just seemed crazy and the motivation for him unbelievable. The killer's dialogue was also just off for me.

This was a dual narrator and I liked Kirt Graves but while Tor Thom has a really interesting, deep voice the emotion just didn't seem to be there for me.

Soo many things about this made no sense. Especially the fact that all the police force ignored a witness to a murder.

Their relationship escalated way too quick. "Baby" was tossed around after their first kiss! (Or shortly thereafter.)

Ray being one of the best detectives out there...? Um. I didn't see any of that. Particularly towards the end.

Speaking of, the epilogue was pointless. It would have been much better to leave it on its light, fun note than go through each characters "where are they now."

It was alright, but it didn't really made me care for the characters. The writing was kind of bold, for my taste. The transition from chapter to chapter wasn't smooth and how the story was written... How the characters told the story, it just didn't feel smooth. I can't describe it any better at the moment. The mystery was okay, but did have more potential.

Let’s go hunting for a serial killer shall we? A vicious serial killer is mutilating young and pretty gay men across town. (Most) of the police force is turning a blind eye, but detective Ray Clancy isn’t one of them and he’s determined to put a stop to the killer before more bodies turn up. That is until he is framed for a crime he didn’t commit and subsequently kicked off the force.

Now six months later he’s started his own private investigator’s firm, but he’s getting fed up with the cheating spouses’ cases he’s forced to take on to pay his bills. Until one day when he gets a phone call from Andy asking for his protection after witnessing his best friend’s murder. A murder the police is still reluctant to tie to the previous ones. As for Ray; he’s determined to once and for all catch the sadistic killer – before he gets anywhere near Andy, the sweet young man he’s starting to fall for.

The first part of this book hooked me. It had me forget everything in real life and I was immersed in this story and these characters. I wanted to solve the heinous crimes and put the killer behind bars – or six feet under – either option would work for me. The characters were engaging and the mystery so gruesome that you just had to know more, to prevent there from being more victims. I did have an issue with this book and that was the dialogue. At times it just felt off – especially the ones involving the killer. It felt like it was trying too hard and it just didn’t work - at least not for me.

Kirt Graves narrated the parts told from Andrew’s POV and he did them really well. He captured his personality just right and it felt like you got to know him. He also varied the intensity of his narration depending on the mood of the book; sad, suspenseful, terrifying, or tender. This performance really enhances the listener experience, for me at least. It draws you in and makes you a part of this hunt – or in Andrew’s case – being stalked by a deranged killer.

I love listening to new (to me) narrators, love to find new gems. However new narrators are also always a risk as you don’t know what you’ll get. Tor Thom had a nice enough voice to listen to, but in general his narration didn’t work for me. He felt uninspired and bored while reading the words in front of him. I don’t know if that was because he was uninspired or if it was due to his monotone narration. Either way it didn't do anything for me.

Great first read from both authors. The suspense was excellent and the characters matched each other perfectly. A cop with a shady background but a good moral compass makes for a great read.
