It contains one of the finest translation of tanka (then called waka) by Shotetsu. The meter, the inagery, economy of words, and Japanese aesthetics are second to none.

Stark, lovely glimpses from the whole, rough gamut of conscious human feeling. Engagingly translated, with brief, informative notes (many by Shotetsu himself) and phonetic transliterations for individual poems. Great bathroom reading.
