"Oliver's a dark shadow in the corner. Curled up. Only moving slightly as he breathes. But he lifts his head after a moment. Just a bit. There's fur on his shoulders. All over his back. On his arms. He's only wearing boxers now. There's hardly any skin left exposed. But it's him. I feel it. I see it. Deep in his eyes, as he turns. My Oliver.I reach out. Walk toward him. My perfect Oliver. My precious Oliver. What has Fane done to you?"Oliver Stanton and Ellenor Stevens have more in common than their love for theatre. A need to escape. For Elle, it's compulsions. For Oliver, it's mania. When fate pulls them together, they find something a reason to face things. But after Oliver's attempt to get help goes horrifically wrong, he begins to wonder. Does he really need to be "normal"? Or is it enough to just be alive? An exploration of life, death, and love through the lens of mental illness.

This was one of my favorite reads in 2018. 'Alive' is thought-provoking and extremely well-written. You can tell how much energy and heart that Lisa Slack put into this novel. The characters are realistic and relatable; the exploration of mental illness is so spot on. I immediately connected with the characters and couldn't put the book down for want of learning what was going to happen next. Would highly recommend joining Elle and Oliver on their journey.
