A century ago, colonists crashed on a distant planet. Technology failed and strange energies caused catastrophic mutations . Now every generation slips away from science, into superstition and darkness . Solenne survives among the broken relics of the past, trying to protect her family from the mutated beasts that wax and wane with the moon. When her father is seriously injured, she turns to the one man she swore never to speak to again. The man who kissed her, vowed he’d return and broke her heart. Can this be their second chance? Since being bitten and cursed to shift into a werewolf every full moon, Aleksandar has lived in exile. Until he receives a letter from Solenne, the woman he promised his heart to years ago. She’s the only thread that keeps him anchored in the chaos, the only memory that keeps him sane.He must protect her from creatures that stalk her family, but how can he protect her from himself? The monster within him won’t be denied.
Nancey writes fun, fast and flirty scifi romances featuring feisty heroines and out-of-this-world heros. Nancey lives in an old house with her husband and two cats who have complaints with management. When she’s not writing, she enjoys video games, horror movies and anything involving time travel.
3.5 stars This was an interesting mix of old world regency and paranormal/scifi. I enjoyed Solenne and her brashness, impulsivity, and inability to lie. I had a hard time with their relationship because they hardly had any time together (at least on page) to rebuild a meaningful relationship. I mean sure, they both were hung up on each other, but they hadn’t spoken in a decade. Since they were teens. The world building was interesting.
Spice: 2/5
Triggers: violence, gore, death and murder, discussion of parent death, animal/monster attack, purity culture, controlling parent, financial hardship, fire, taxidermied sentient creature, poisoning, severe illness
I really liked this sci-fi/paranormal/historical?? The books setting is a distant planet, post technological town, but also feels like a historical and a paranormal with the werewolf mystery going on. It's highly intriguing and kept me entertained. On Everand this is labeled as YA and this is certainly NOT YA, though not too terribly smutty (there is one and a half sex scenes, maybe). I enjoyed it and would read more from this series.
This one should have been a banger: growly grump and bluestocking spinster meets sci-fi regency chaos plus sharp banter, lush worldbuilding and a side romance that stole the spotlight.
But somewhere in the middle, the fun stalled, it felt drawn out and repetitive and didn’t recover. The leads, once delicious, started testing my patience and didn’t live up to their potential. It picks up in the end, but I wanted more bite and all I got was bark.
2.5 ⭐️ The first half was cute, but the second half just got so choppy. I wasn’t as engaged. It was also a bit predictable. I got through it fast and there were really cute components, but overall just okay.
Desperately needed an editor to fix the numerous inconsistencies, grammar, and absolutely ham-handed attempts at foreshadowing/hints. Extremely predictable, to the point where I was wondering if ANY of the characters had a brain cell to share. The characters felt flat, especially towards the end and not a lot of their actions made sense, pulling emotional 180s left and right. I think I got whiplash. The supporting characters’ motivations were especially lacking weight.
There was a Scooby-doo level explanation from the FMC at the end of a nearly incomprehensible climatic scene despite the need for urgency to aid some of the characters. Like the situation called for immediate intervention but it was apparently fine to just sit and discuss the hows and whys for a bit before fixing it all.
It’s honestly a shame because the idea for the book is solid and there’s some promising world-building. It just falls short of the mark and I find myself not believing in it enough.
Are there good beasts and bad beasts? On a planet for decades, the technology their ancestors brought from Earth don’t work and are now rusting and of no use. There is something about the atmosphere and the moon that prevent the old technology from working and also people have been turned into witches, vampires, and werewolves. And the wolves are a danger because every full moon they attack, and if bitten the person becomes a werewolf. But witches are immune to the bite and they have become the hunters of the wolves. Solenne lost the love of her life when she was sixteen. Her dad threw him out because he wasn’t wealthy, and it’s been ten years with no word from Alek. But now her family needs him and she hopes he will come. What she doesn’t know is that he is one of the beasts now and he is afraid he will hurt her. His beast wants to claim her. Two beasts are terrorizing their village and Alek needs to protect his mate and her family. Even if they can never be together. I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I really wanted to love this one—shifters, danger, and a promising setup usually have me hooked faster than a mate bond at a full moon. Unfortunately, this just didn’t land for me.
The pacing felt uneven, and the story skimmed the surface instead of digging into the emotional depth it needed. The characters had potential, but their development felt rushed, making it hard to truly connect or care about the stakes. The romance especially fell flat—more told than felt—and the tension never fully paid off.
It’s not a total loss: the concept itself is intriguing, and fans who enjoy lighter, fast paranormal reads might still find something to enjoy here. For me, though, it lacked the bite I was hoping for. 🐺💔
Sometimes the wolf howls… and sometimes it just whimpers.
I was unsure if I would like this novel, but I loved it. The world building was creative and different from anything else that I have read. I love sci-fi, fantasy, and paranormal romance, so this novel was a thoroughly enjoyable mashup. The writing quality was superb. The characterization was excellent, and I loved the strength of the heroine and the sexy monster-ness of the hero. He was HAWT, in my opinion. I also loved the length of this novel. The one thing I did not like much was how long this novel took to arrive at the sexy bits, but I know lots of readers really enjoy slow burns, and this slow burn was quite well done. I greatly anticipate the release of the next novel in this series. Great job, Nancey!
Overall not a bad book. Interesting enough plot with some intriguing world building. I liked the idea of a once advanced people losing technology and regressing to an earlier time, though society reverting completely to regency mannerisms and style seems a bit ehhh. Then again, imaginary world! I had some issues with the pacing. The beginning seemed promising and I was hooked, but then there were random jumps forward without any real build up. Major spoilers ahead. Like pretty much the whole plot…
A whole dang wedding is planned and then suddenly needs to be postponed by three weeks for *reasons*, which is apparently no problem at all. Then we jump ahead those weeks. We don’t even get to really experience the wedding. How did Alek feel seeing her walk down the aisle? No idea, cause Alek spaced out due to excitement until he needed to kiss her. Then in the epilogue Miles and Luis are magically great. Everyone was gone, until they all come back together from doing their respective stuff which is best case bland and worse case vague, and everything was just business as usual. There were a lot of things left unexplained, too. For example: - Who were all the other wolves? We know one was Chambers, that seemed pretty obvious from the start. But who was the one Alek killed while traveling and then the one who supposedly burned in the barn? - Why was Chambers so obsessed with Solenne? He wanted her to be his anchor, but WHY? Why was he so obsessed with having an anchor in the first place? He was old and seemed to have full control of himself, he didn’t need one. Why did he map out their house and break in? For Wolfsbane? Seems dumb. He took that one weapon on the solstice and then what? Just kept it? Why did he take it?! - How is it Charlotte was just randomly suspicious and decided the day of her wedding was the day to say “hmm, I have reservations.” Like, wha? Maybe it’ll be explained in her book, but it left a lot to be desired that she just found out he had a wife who died (when? How long were they married? We don’t know), and decided he was fishy but never did anything for weeks (or months, I’m unsure since the timelines confused me). - Chambers turned almost comically evil out of nowhere. He was fine, albeit a bit sketchy, and then TA-DAH! Evil mastermind spiking wine and trying to get Miles to attack his wife in public for *reasons*. Alluding that he will beat his wife. I get that people can hide who they are, but he gets like five pages of sudden dastardliness. His death was a bit anticlimactic, too. - How is Jase training to be a hunter? He doesn’t have the extra powers! - Witches and magical technology swords were a mere blip of a plot point. Did Solenne infuse that butter knife with power? Did she do something at the stones? It’s never fully fleshed out. There are more, but that’s enough.
So, like I said. Overall an enjoyable read. Low angst, the couple has been in love for forever and try to fight it…sort of. Bit of a slow burn. I think there are two spicy scenes that don’t occur until well after 70% in. Nothing super exciting. Not my fave, but not bad. I’m still interested enough to read Charlotte’s book.

I was curious to find this werewolf fantasy romance to actually be SciFi, though it feels much more historical urban fantasy than anything else, to be honest. At the same time, it also gave me vague Bloodborne vibes, if much more light hearted, but that was fun! The mystery wasn't the hardest to figure out, but I enjoyed the misdirection that kept me second guessing. What I found more annoying was that I couldn't quite place the worldbuilding, particular the societal standards of the setting. There seemed to be a bit of a mismatch between what's expected of women, because there are plenty of sexist expectations, and talk about how 26 is super old for being unmarried. But at the same time, women are hunters and scientists, and young men can equally be married off for money, which speaks of a much less big gap between social expectations for gender roles? The romance was pretty basic, childhood sweethearts torn apart who now reunite. The werewolf stuff lacked a bit of depth to me, mainly because it pretended there to be a lot of depth expect we don't really learn much if anything about how it actually works? Despite all these flaws, I had a pretty good time with this, and I'm happy to read the sequel immediately.
I voluntarily read an arc of this book for an honest review. I was very happily surprised by this book. I struggled a tiny bit at the beginning to get into the story. It was part Christmas stress, part being unable to concentrate because I struggle when the main characters don’t begin the story. Man am I glad I kept reading! This story is unlike anything I’ve ever read before. Like Van Helsing meets Underworld. There are Hunters and there are werewolves but not your average genre. It’s on another planet that was fascinating to read about. Energy fluxes at the equinox, Hunter energies and a mystery that keeps you on your toes. I have to brag though, through foreshadowing and intuition I knew early on who the villain was. However, I still had some of the characters motives wrong! This book has so many layers you will love it! The romance aspect is that of soul mates kept apart for their own good or so it seems. The peripheral characters really are an integral part to the story as well. All combined this book makes for a very interesting and eventful storyline that will keep you turning pages.
Solenne gave up her education to come home and take care of her family after her mom died. Her father and brother are focused on protecting the town from werewolves and need her to take care of the homestead. When her father is injured, Solenne writes to Alek for help. Alek is her childhood love who she has not seen in ten years. She believes he has gotten over her and is unaware of the real reason he has stayed away so long. He was bitten by a werewolf. As Alek comes back into her life they realize they can never be parted. Alek is determined to keep her safe from the monster within himself and the one that is stalking her.
This was a cute romance with a fun paranormal theme. I liked the characters a lot, but some of the scenes felt off and the timeline jumped oddly at times. There was a lot of action and a bit of explanation of the magic system that I still do not understand. It left off on a cliffhanger pointing to the next book which left me curious to see what the author does with it. I am thinking about it...
This book was cute and suspenseful at once. I enjoyed the mystery aspect, despite how easy it was to figure out. I think there were too many hints given which gave away the villain in the end. I believe it would have hit harder if there was more mystery. It would definitely make the ending more dramatic. The romance aspects were pretty cute. Primal play was well represented in the characters, which was nice. The backstories of the main characters and the family was helpful in understanding the groundwork made before they came back together. The smut was sweet, but hot, despite there being less than I anticipated. The setup for the next book was well done and I look forward to it. I give this book 3/5 spicy stars and 4/5 stars overall!
From its setting in a future alternative for humankind (that actually strips us of technology and is more regency era), to its approach to werewolfs/monsters, this book was such a surprise from this author. I’ve liked a few of her other books but I LOVED this one. I loved the romance and storyline of the main characters and I also loved all the secondary characters and was thrilled to get to know them as well. I can’t wait for additional stories in this world and really hope we see Solenne and Alek again as their love was so deep and lovely to watch.
Edit: I assumed this book was a new release (March 2023) but it was actually published in 2020. I also see older cover art on Goodreads from what is currently on the cover of my kindle unlimited version. The new graphic illustrated cover is much more fitting to the story than the outer space themed original which I probably saw previously but it never grabbed my attention.
I generally really enjoy Nancy Cummings' s sci-fi romances but, for me, this one's world building just did not gel. Earth space travellers who go off course and end up rebuilding their Earth environment on a hostile planet: fine. But why would their descendents end up with furniture that's described as if it would fit right in to a 1800's Georgian or Victorian-style house? I just found the mixture of space travel and such old fashioned elements odd.
The story actually seemed more attuned to the 19th century in general, the dress, the courtships, furnishings, etc, than outer space. Female lead Solenne and her best friend Charlotte, apart from mention that Solenne wears trousers as well as dresses, would seemingly be right at home in Jane Austen's era, as would the men in the tale. Cummings provides a plausible reason for the loss of their space age technology but these other old-fashioned elements not so much.
For me this story was okay but seemed long and not terribly memorable.
I read a complimentary advance copy; this is my voluntary and honest review.
I was bored and was skipping and skipping, hoping there would be something interesting happening , beside the conversations I really did not cared about .. I refused to read the last 1 or 2 chapters. I was bored out of my mind. The second book in the series I liked but this one.. no, that was not my thing at all. I mean what do you really have here? Father gets attacked by a werewolf, she writes to her friend , dude she loves for ever, he shows up. He is a werewolf , has it handled because she is his mate ( I guess) so he doesn`t , did not turned into a mindless beast. They kill one or 2 beasts. They want to marry... that is it. This is more like a family novella, about people talking , problems inside a family, and having friends come over . That is all that is to it. My opinion. The " fantasy story part and the werewolf part , do not even matter.
Now this book took a moment to fully understand how the author was detailing the story. After being confused to the time period of the book this reader finally understood. Now me the story usually needs to spell out the time period without a doubt but this one will make you think a past , a present and a future in such a way that you will be the author got confused.
After stating all of that the book was not boring. The characters actions may feel some emotions of dislike, disbelief and utter disgust but you should not be bored. The was one character that made you want to like her but her personality for me was off putting but she ended up stealing the book in the end. Now ever reader may not believe this but pick up and enjoy the hunt.
A century ago, settlers landed on a planet and when technology failed and something caused genetic mutations. Every full moon, they would change into werewolves. Solenne came from a family of hunters of these werewolves. When her father was attacked, she has no choice but to contact an old childhood friend, Aleksander. However, Aleksander has a secret. He's a beast, himself
Loved this so much! This was my first story by Nancey Cummings. It was so unique and totally loved Aleksander and Solenne's story. What really got me was Nancey found a way to add Sci Fi, PNR, and historical romance into one story.
I received an ARC via Nancey's Newsletter and voluntarily gave my honest opinion and review
Humans have advanced greatly, but it does them no good on the planet these colonists crashed, and it fails them. Solenne's family helps protect their town from the beast that hunt them, by hunting the beasts, but her father is hurt. In her desperation she sends word to Aleksandar, and hopes he will come and help them. Aleksandar will need to decide if he will take the risk (that he could hurt her) and help Solenne. I enjoyed this interesting world where the people are struggling with the loss technology and the planet only had a small portion of it made suitable for humans. I liked Solenne and Aleksandar, and their story, although sometimes the ideas of their society are a bit old fashioned. I am voluntarily reviewing a copy I received, and giving my thoughts and opinions on it.
This book took a long time to get into and I’m not sure what era it was supposed to be in, I understand that that they landed on the wrong planet and earth’s technology doesn’t work because of the atmosphere and moon and now they are back to living in the 1900 with horse and carriages witches, vampires, werewolves etc. Solenne Marechals family are the Monster Hunters of Box hill and the small village relies on them for protection but when her father Godwin is injured and her brother Luis is not up to scratch she calls her on her best friend Aleksander that her father had thrown out because he wanted to marry her. Now he’s back 10yrs later and all he has ever thought of in that time was his mate Solenne but he has a secret now that stops him from claiming her and her father made him promise not to pursue her. How does this all turn out for everyone, get this book to find out.
Aside from the fact that it was painfully obvious that , this was perfectly fine for what it was.
I found the combination sci-fi/historical fun. I wouldn't say this was the best paranormal romance out there, but it fit the bill when I just wanted something easy to listen to.
There were some plot holes and unexplained events that did lessen the overall quality of the writing (which you can read about in this review), but again, it was something I could overlook because I was entertained well enough and also listening on audio (which historically means I give a book a slightly higher rating than I likely would have had I physically read it with my eyeballs).
Hopefully this is the beginning of a new series... there are so many juicy characters... Nancey never disappoints.
I really enjoyed Solenne and Aleksander's story... but I'm so intrigued with the little juicy tidbits about the Nexus and Alek's family. I like how strong Solenne is and I hope this is just the beginning of her becoming even more kick ass in future installments. Alek never stood a chance, even if he'd wanted to...
I could figure that our villain was truly our villain but it wasn't revealed what his angle was until the end... It's like you can figure something is hinky but can't figure out the why... Very satisfying...
I freaking LOVED this book. It was SUCH a pleasant surprise!!! From the very beginning, everything was so compelling- the world building, the characters, the relationship development, literally everything. And it was all remarkably well-written. Alek and Solenne had literally the most romantic relationship… I love LOVE a “not a damsel in distress but he’s still going apeshit and saving her” moment. I normally shy away from anything sci-fi, but I thought the whole premise of this book was actually super interesting and felt more like fantasy with a sci-fi origin story than anything else. Overall, just great!
I love the idea of a Regency novel with werewolves, especially the backstory of a planet partially terraformed by humans who have gradually lost almost all their technology over 150 years. But the execution leaves several things to be desired. Fully formed characters, for one—everybody seems to have just a single character trait. More evocative description of what would appear to be a pretty fascinating setting. Actual chemistry between the protagonists. Twists you can’t see coming a mile away. You know, that kind of stuff!
I really enjoyed Solenne and Aleksandar story. Hopefully this is the beginning of a new series. The world building in this story was amazing. The characters in the story have very interesting backstory and monster origins. I'm especially intrigued about the Nexus and Alek's family. Overall a great read. Looking forward to seeing what else is in store for this series. As always my reviews are totally voluntarily no monetary compensation was received and the opinions I have expressed are my own.
I really liked this story. I thought it mixed the future, paranormal, and a touch of a Victorian feel into an interesting story. At heart it s a tail of lost childhood love and a bit of a mystery and a touch of scifi. The story itself built slowly as it revealed what might be going on and how odd some of the characters were. Kept me guessing and thinking what might be revealed next. Entertaining and a different spin on a werewolf story.
