In Tyrolin Puxty’s book The Bazaar, Brianna is a young woman who is part of a Romani clan, yet she feels disconnected from her family and clan. While she’s always been told to leave them would be to die, she has reached a breaking point – she wants to find any way possible to strike out on her own. However, trying to do so sets loose a series of events that threatens not only her clan but also the entire world. Only with the unlikely help of both friends AND enemies will she have a fighting chance of setting things right.

Although the writing style was engaging, I found myself having several critiques of the book, and it mostly had to do with the worldbuilding rather than the writing itself. One, the term “gypsy,” which is used throughout the book to describes Brianna and her clan, is considered derogatory by many. Two, often the main character groups her entire clan into a faceless entity – “they” always do this, “they” always do that – so it’s hard to feel an emotional connection to them when they seem so monotone in construction, especially when their lives are threatened. Three, the setting is confusing – is it present day? Then why no cell phones, no internet, no airplanes, etc.? Is it the far past? Then why is there a television in the Healer rooms and microphones mentioned when the clan performs for an audience? Some of the book’s worldbuilding seems inconsistent, including the level of technology present. It might have been better just to leave technology out of it altogether, since it never actually plays a part in the story – it’s just mentioned a couple times and forgotten, but enough is put in to create questions about what exists and what doesn’t.

I have a feeling most of these things won’t bother many readers – as mentioned, the writing style is engaging and it’s an easy read, with a humorous, chatty tone and not a dull moment. However, every time one of these small worldbuilding “problems” popped up in the book, it gave me pause when reading and made me feel disconnected from the characters and what was happening to them. But if these types of inconsistencies don’t bother you, then I’d recommend this book to fans of fantasy who want to read a story with some light adventuring and a humorous tone to the narrative.

This was a great start to the Gypsies series, it had what I was looking for in this type of book. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and their world. I had enjoyed the way Tyrolin Puxty wrote this and can't wait for more in this series and more.

This book is a great page turner. Bree and West were exactly as brothers and sisters are. Griffin was my favorite character. I love that he cusses. Such a fabulous read.
