We notice all around us that the Church in the West is in rapid decline, with a shrinking percentage of the population identifying themselves as "Christians." Yet around the world, the revolutionary movement of Jesus continues to expand at an amazing rate. So we know there is yet hope for the Western Church, but much must change to see that hope realized in the lives of people - and the local churches they participate in. The authors boldly advocate for a new reformation - a returning back to the simple teaching of Jesus - that will release again the revolutionary fire of the Church unleashed!

My denomination gave me a copy of this book after attending a Zoom seminar last year. It's useful for its focus on what they call "the irreducible core (IC)" -- distilling the gospel down to Jesus' 2 great commandments (to love God and the neighbor) and the Matthean version of the Great Commission. (The authors never explain why Matthew's version preferred over the ones in the other gospels). There's a good focus on relationships, with God and others, in discipleship. Missional living comes from that. There's also a good focus on structures and forms that empower for ministry, rather than serving as impediments. Their ideas are good; sometimes they make the mistake of treating them like they're the cure-all for church decline. But I do like focus on the New Testament design/call for the church, and to hold confidence that the true church in the larger sense is not in trouble. God knows what He's doing.
