Steve has gone missing without a word to anyone. He lived with an abusive father, so everyone believes Steve has run away. Mitch is Steve's best friend, and he is far from ready to accept that answer. There is Steve's father, who wouldn't care if anything happened to Steve. There is Tehgo, who is another friend to the boys, but has a secret of her own. Mitch knows something happened to Steve, and he is willing to do anything to prove what happened, and who caused it.
This was an interesting read. I read this as an ARC and didn't know what to think at first. It was suspenseful thats for sure. I kept wanting to read more to find out what happened. However, the main character was annoying af. I understand his best friend went missing but he tried way too hard. Also there were two parts to the ending and I didn't like either. No spoilers, but the one part was kind of obvious but at the same time felt kind of random. The main ending was just annoying. We read this whole thing but never got the answer we expected. I want a part 2 lol. I would reccomend this though.
It starts with a boy talking about his best friend, Steve, and what a rough life he had with his mom leaving him and his dad abusing him. Most of his time is spent hiding out at his friend’s place. All he wanted to do was get out of it. And now he was missing.
Right away, this story grabs the reader with that strong start. It slows down for a while as it details the all the things that Steve and Mitch do as Steve continues taking the brunt of his father’s anger. These basic scenes all lead up to Steve’s sudden disappearance, which occurs in chapter 5, when he fails to show up for work, sending poor Mitch on a desperate panic to find his friend. Did his dad finally do away with him? Did he run away without telling Mitch?
The rest of the story is spent with Mitch searching high and low, holding faith that the police can find something, and awaiting Steve’s pending return. The narrative is simple and easy to get into. I liked the emotional weight of Mitch’s concern and his willful determination to keep looking. The search for the truth turned this into a compelling read. You just had to find out what happened to Steve. There was a nice twist after Mitch found Steve’s car in the woods, but I had anticipated another scenario, which I probably would’ve liked better. Still, Mitch had to come to some hard realizations afterward.
Although I wasn’t totally satisfied with the ending, I was well kept with the story and was engaged with it from start to finish. I would still be interested to see where the author takes this story in a 2nd book.
This has to be the best book I've read so far this year. The characters are so real and the situation so (unfortunately) possible. Draws you in and doesn't let go til the last page.
I was very intrigued by reading this book, it's one of the genres I'm definitely into. After reading some of the books I've read lately, this one didn't finish like I'd expect it to. But it was still good and I'm always happy to support a very local author!
