Here you get a rather mild collection of 21 ghost stories set in Cornwall: A Coach with headless horses, a ghostly duel, the hound of St Austell... interesting thing is to visit the places the stories took place. I bet some of them still exist with the descriptions given in the text. Maybe rather a book for the Cornwall enthusiast than the general reader. To me it was okay.
I picked this one up in the gift shop at Helston Cornish life museum as a quick read this spooky season but sadly I was left a bit underwhelmed. It’s not a very big book and to be honest all the tales were rather tame and some of them I’ve read repeated in order similar ghost story books. They were also told in quite a brisk, factual manner rather than any attempt to spook up the stories for the reader. I think the only benefits I got out of it was that purchasing it on holiday there I was able to associate some of the places the stories took place with the locations we actually visited and see if some of the areas still existed and had any sort of ghostly atmosphere. It’s a quick read but I didn’t get a lot out of it unfortunately.
