Not sure what I think of this book... it's obviously written for kids (maybe middle school age), but the writing really fluctuates. The first half covers a lot of different creatures, - ghosts, lake monsters, vampires, were creatures, Yetis, giants, etc. Just a page or two to cover each topic, with little paragraphs and photos sprinkled throughout the page. On each topic, there's a little snippet at the end, most of which say something to discredit the myth - like "Monsters don't exist" - "The idea of vampires is really quite silly..." - or "Despite the increasing sophistication of modern technology, there is no conclusive proof of the existence of ghosts." There are also a few page on psychics, telekinesis, and ESP. Then you hit the second half of the book, and you hit pages and pages about aliens, alien abductions, UFOs, and so on... And the snippets start turning more "serious" - "If you meet an alien, RUN! Modern UFO writers don't claim that all aliens are dangerous, but there is enough evidence to convince you not to take the risk." And "Reports say that UFOs can 'turn off' human technology and shoot down military planes. They have paralyzing beams and can abduct entire regiments of men. They do horrible experiments on people. If they exist, these beings are much more advanced than us, and they are dangerous." WTF? That escalated quickly.
Great gateway for weird kids like I was into the myths and mysteries surrounding popular "scary" creatures or stories. Similar to the Eyewitness books layout where there were multiple pictures with an accompanying paragraph outlining the history, social context or why something is perceived as scary.
Scare facts! While lots of interesting facts are given, the writing style switched from fractural hat includes some sophisticated ideas to patronizing conclusions speckled with exclamations marks. Who is this book for? According to the cover, ten years and up. Before giving to a child, be advised the Christianity is portrayed as myth and New Age practices are deemed possible if not proved. In the spirit of political correctness, pollution is included in in modern monsters.
*Donated by student at Book Fair Spine tingling good fun, this one will surely scare the pants off many of my readers. Read at nearly midnight, even I found some of the creepy tidbits unsettling. Ghosts, monsters, demons, ESP, aliens, psychics...this and so much more await the reader brave enough to open the book. I predict You Can't Scare Me! will be checked out over and over again.
The book was actually better than i expected because it honestly convinced me about the strange paranormal things going on all around the world and in the past. I love reading about mythology, monsters, and the paranormal activities so this book was absolutely a good choice for me.
Ummm alot of paranormal stuff. If you like ghosts and UFOs read it.I liked the UFO parts and the monster parts.Ghost parts weren't bad but I HATED the psycic and mindreading stuff.
This book covers a lot of different superstitions and topics, so that makes it interesting, but it isn't something that hooks your interest necessarily.
A good "non-fiction" resource for kids interested in such stuff. Has both paranormal and scientific research included to debunk the ghostly stuff that is reported. Interesting way to organize it.
