Peter Stipe had always been curious about his heritage. His mother, who insisted they were Scottish, often made up stories that Peter would later question. After discovering a couple of old books, a marriage license and memorabilia, Peter embarks upon a journey to discover his family history and the truth about who he is and where he came from. With detailed honesty and heart-rending curiosity, Peter's quest for the truth leads him to discoveries that will forever alter his inner and outer view of the world.
Following the evidence wherever it would lead, author Peter Stipe fleshed out the lives of his great-grandparents Oscar & Maggie and their descendants, including himself and fashioned a family history into an historical novel. With the help of historical societies from the towns in which his ancestors lived and more modern tools such as Ancestry.com he brought life those who might have otherwise been unremembered. Written well enough to maybe inspire one to research their own family's roots.
An interesting take on a memoir - a journey into the past. The author discovers that much of what his mother has told him about his family history is false. Without trying to upset her, he begins his own search into the truth. It's a mix of memoir and fiction as he tells the story - as he imagines it - of his great grandparents. If you are curious about your own roots and family stories (legends) you should give this a read. Recommended.
