American expat Scott Nolan has recently moved to Ireland and enjoys a flourishing career as a doctor, a rising media profile as a persuasive campaigner against drug abuse, and is very much in love with Laura, his beautiful new wife. But one wintry Dublin morning, Scott’s life is changed forever when a team of contract killers attempts a daring double ambush. Their target: Ireland’s antidrug government minister and his medical spokesman, Dr. Scott Nolan. The attack goes horribly wrong, and in the bloodbath that follows, Laura is killed by a bullet meant for Nolan. Fueled by grief and revenge, and desperate to claim back his life and find the killers, Scott enters into an uneasy alliance with his wife’s brother, police detective Mark Higgins. Together they embark on a highly controversial international covert mission to slowly and systematically infiltrate the drug scene and track down the assassin. Using secret U.S. army interrogation compounds and breaking almost every law in the land, the duo finally close in on their target . . . . This nail biting, heart-pounding blockbuster weaves a tale from the back streets of Dublin to the red-light districts of Amsterdam and the seedy streets of Bangkok, accelerating to a breathtaking climax that will test Nolan’s physical and moral fortitude to the absolute limit.
Paul Carson is a doctor based in south Dublin where he runs an Asthma and Allergy clinc for children. He has published a number of health books and, as well as weiting various medical journals, he was editor of Irish Doctor magazine. Dr Carson is married and has two children.
This tale--of an Irish-American surgeon teaming up with his brother-in-law and the Irish police to catch his wife's murderer--moves along well enough, but it's a fairly by-the-numbers, tepid affair. And that's apart from the unlikelihood of a surgeon quickly becoming a weapon-savvy, James Bond-like avenger. Not really worth the time.
This was the final book of Carson's I have read and I would argue very much the best. It is well written, detailed and the raw grit of Nolan and Higgins going after Laura's killer is brilliant. In Sean Kennedy is a villain that would rival most and Carson could easily do a prequel on just him !! Good book, and would recommend it to those who like a good drug fuelled tourist trip around the world and specifically Dublin.
Slow in parts, fast in parts. Not a huge fan of the writing style, but thought it had a good plot line. Not a favorite read but I think it could make a great movie.
A double assassination attempt on the streets of Dublin changes an American doctor's life forever. He gets involved in the attempt to bring the terrorist responsible to justice.
