Hilda Stahl was an American author of middle grade and young adult novels, many of them in series. Most of her books are classified as Christian fiction.

Biography from one of her books: "Hilda Stahl was born and raised in the Nebraska sandhills. As a Young teen she attended Bible college, where she met her husband, Norman. They raised their seven children in Michigan, where she lived until her death in 1993. When Hilda was a young mother with three children, she saw an ad in a magazine for a correspondence course in writing. She took the test, passed it, and soon fell in love with writing. (Book 2 in the White Pine Chronicles) The compelling saga of one woman's dangerous struggle to find her legacy even as she battles to save the beloved white pines. The last stand of pines became Clay Havlick's on his 25th birthday. But Lark Barrit considers the forest her home as she walks the line every day- guarding them against the greed of men like Willie Thorne. Burdened by the promise she made to Jig, just before he died, Lark agonizes as Clay begins to court Willie's daughter. Can Lark survive is she keeps her promise? This book was intrigueing, interesting and held my interest well. It was slightly confusing to me at one point but it that might have been a reading error on my part =D

It was full of dangerous happenings for Lark, an orphan and friend of Free and his wife. Willie and his Indian wife are still trying to kill and ruin the pines and Free's son-Clay's business. The story was well written and the characters were believable but it just didn't measure up to book number one. It lacked the punch and the hardships that existed in the first book. It was still great in the spiritual insights.

Another fast and heartwarming read. I really enjoy all of the characters and the plot of this series. I'm so glad that grabbed it off of my grandma's book shelf as a teenager. If you are looking for something with drama and lots of feels, this is perfect.

Lark was such a strong character, worth more than the storyline she received from Stahl.

Read my review from the "Covenant". The book that I have was an exclusive combination, in which it had books 1 and 2.

Lark is the main character in the 2nd book in the White Pine Chronicles and she longs to protect the last stand of white pines and keep the promise she made to her friend, Jig, before he died. But will it cost her her life? The greed of the Thorne family continues to cause trouble in this book as well. Betrayed by the matron of the orphanage she came from, does she have any hopes of finding her father now at the age of 22? While the first book in a series is usually the best, I liked this one a lot too. The story didn’t weaken and was just as compelling.

Book 2 takes place in 1890, Upper Michigan, with the continuance of the preservation of the White pines. Now the villain is an adult and Mr. Thorne has raised a daughter to be as conniving as he has been. She doesn't realize it though, and doesn't see her father as he is until much later in the story. Jennett and Freeman Havlick have now raised their children and Lark, an orphan marries into their family after she comes to work and guard the trees. Much happens during this time in relationships and Lark finds her real father. There is one more in the saga.

Romantic historical fiction - More engaging than the first book as it added an element of mystery and several twists. It was nice to see that the introduction of love was not simply physical and that when you marry your love for your spouse should grow in the journey.

A little cheesy, but continuing story of the descendants of the Havlick's and the White pines. I read it for feel good, emotional value.
