Derick hunts demons. He has been doing it for as long as he remembers. He does it because protecting the people in his city is his duty. It’s always been a straightforward job, until a demon saves his life. What does it mean for Derick that a demon wants him to live? What does it mean for the world he knows? The people he is supposed to protect? When the most basic fact his life is built upon might not be true, how is he supposed to figure out who the enemies are? Who his allies are? And if all sides want him dead, should he even bother fighting them?
This is a fun addictive urban fantasy set in an alternate semi-sci-fi setting on another world. The main character, Derick, is a demon hunter, keeping the city safe from demons who kill and eat humans. However as the novel progresses we, along with the protagonist, discover things aren't all as they seem at first. I really liked the world-building around the demons and the main character, and I'm interested to see where it goes in the next book as Derick strikes out on his own without the agency.
MC is like a robot: no emotions, doesn’t have feelings. He is trained to fight demons for humans, and it goes normally until he encounters a smart demon who doesn’t want to kill him just willy nilly. He has to sift through what he was told when he was made and what the demon says.
