3.5 stars, rounded up because I genuinely enjoyed this series. It didn’t do anything that audaciously new, but it had two strong leads who worked well together and made a great couple.
It doesn’t waste any time either, but that’s possibly to its detriment in this final volume, which sometimes feels like it has a bunch of beats it needs to hit and is mercilessly checking them off in rapid succession - the scene with Asahi’s sister, while getting the job done, feels like it was dropped right in the middle of the story.
Also her sister sucks.
The plot machinations threaten to get in the way of Asahi and Yokaze’s romance, but I did like that they spend this volume just being a couple and supporting one another. It’s something more shojo could lean into.
Like I said, there’s nothing new here whatsoever, but I’ll take a basic story told well over something trying to reinvent the wheel and ending up with a mess every time. If you’ve ever been interested in Nikki Asada’s works, this is definitely the series to check out.
I honestly wish it had been a bit longer to give some of these plots time to breathe, but it’s a perfectly nice short series for an afternoon read.
This manga series held my heart in the palm of its hand and tangled my emotions before bringing it to such a perfect ending. I so sad that it has to end, but what a breath-taking series.
The RA turned out to be a not-so-bad guy after all. And they saved the hall. Even better, the young couple get to stay together, under the same roof, & it doesn't have to be a secret anymore! All's well that ends well. These are the kind of stories I enjoy most. Not earth shattering in scope or size, just a fun little school-life rom-com. Art, very well done. Dialogue, excellent. Characters, believable, likeable, relatable.
The previous volumes could be vacuous at times, but this volume pulled the story together with pleasant dialogue and a heartwarming end. Nikki Asada has become a mangaka whose work stands out for me for her strong female leads with charming personalities.
I need physical copies of this series. On the one hand, hate that it's over. On the other happy everything happened so quickly because I hate waiting for the couple to come to fruition.
5 happy endings out of 5 'missing some spiciness though' s
Chapter 14: Parfaits and Dates Chapter 15: The Dorm and Tablecloths Chapter 16: Asahi and Home Chapter 17: Tsukigase and Midnight Oil Hall Final Chapter: Love and Secrets
