Who was Jake Ingersoll? A mysterious death in 1960's Edinburgh leads Detective inspector Bob Black on a journey across Europe that spans decades in a quest to discover the truth.
Can’t say that I enjoyed this book. The story has the potential to be good but it covers too many characters and is set in too many times that it becomes difficult to remember who is who and to keep track of the plot.
If you enjoy intriguing storylines, with an easy rhythm to the pace of a story and one which switches between 1960s Edinburgh and various European countries over previous time periods, then The Lapidary is an absolute must.
I really found myself warming to DI Bob Black who is brought in to investigate the death of one Jake Ingersoll. As he starts the investigation, his first challenge is that the victim is in fact not who he had claimed to be to his fiancé, her family and those around him. And it is from there that the author takes us back in time to learn who ‘Jake’ really was and who would have been driven to now take his life.
This is an outstanding story with excellent characters and a fast-moving plot. It throws into light how some people really are too good to be true whether through fear, survival or greed Julie MP Adams deserves to be recognised as a commanding voice in the world of crime fiction.
