Busy preparing for a hard winter, the growing community outside New Albany finds themselves targeted by desperate raiders and organized criminal gangs intent on making their own preparations for what may come. All the while, an unexpected war with Mexico means resources meant for recovery are instead being moved from the area. What will Bryan and his family do to insure their continued survival?

No plague. No EMP. No zombies. Grateful for the continuation of the story of life in a small Texas community after a meteor strike on the other side of the planet. The story is driven by the actions & thoughts of the people affected, not by political rhetoric or fill-in-the-blank zombie warfare. Mr. Allen has created people you root for & who you want to spend time with. I thank him VERY much for his writing & look forward to the next book in this series!
This is a book that deserves a solid read time - while it is a good stand alone story it would pay to go back and pick up Rockfall as the beginning of the adventure
It never ceases to amaze me how the opinions on this book can vary so widely. From one to 5 stars... and everything in-between. Be that as it may... I found the series great and half hope that there will be a follow up. The characters are easy to identify with and are portrayed in detail. While none of us hope to ever see this story come thru... it is believable enough and we've only been on this planet for the blink of an eye. God only knows what the future may hold ? If you are into the apocalypse books, you oghta give this series a read. Recommended.
A well thought out and researched book. Good interesting storyline, pretty good character development. Starting to slide into just a series of gun battles rather than addressing impending extinction, it's now more about the bullets than the beans, but the other books have set the scene well enough that the story carries it. Could do with a good proof read as the flow is annoyingly often broken by an out of place word of a grammatical error. But all in all a gripping story
There were no punches pulled. Our people in this story are facing the harsh realities of surviving in the devastation after the meteor strike. Every person is very real and responds not like superheros but like real people we know. This one has a hard ending. I think one valuable lesson is learning that it is those that can adjust are the ones that have the best chance of survival. Looking forward to the next book in this very well written series.
I have really enjoyed this book, the third in the series of Rockfall! Mr. William Allen, congratulations on another best seller. I do have to admit that you made me cry, and they were not tears of happiness! Just saying! I love the characters and the way they keep expanding their community. I would definitely recommend this series to everyone, it is that good. I hope the fifth one won't be a long wait.
This is a great read. The storey moves forward with plenty of action as well as keeping you envolved with the characters. This arthur s ability to keep the reader invested is one of his best strength. Get the book you will enjoy it.
I rush to read these books by William Allen. I am totally invested in these characters and the struggle they go thru to survive in this terrible time. These stories satisfy and leave you wanting more at the same time. Bring on book four, Mr. Allen!
Just finished reading "Bite of Frost", the third of the "Tertiary Effects" series, and quite liked it. This is not a stand-alone book, and if you don't start with the first book in the series ("Rockfall") you'll quickly get lost.
I liked that there were enough variety of characters to keep my interest, but not so many that I needed to take notes to remember who was who. I also liked that the series didn't focus on the initial disaster, but on its secondary effects. The people he wrote about sounded like anyone you could meet on the street.
Ryan and Mike -- two of the main characters -- do seem to have very good luck at getting out of the situations they were in, but this is typical in "action" type books, as no one wants to see the heroes die on the second page.
Also typical was the emphasis on the make, model and detailing of every gun they came across, which got a little dull at times, but seems to be standard in this type of fiction.
The slow-motion detailing of the effects of the disaster seemed real enough, although I had to question the bit about the eruptions of so many volcanoes at once. But...it was an interesting plot point, and could be true for all I know. As no one's ever been around to record what happens when something that big hits the earth, no one really knows. Regardless, it did add to the story.
I especially liked the time the author spent showing the economic and supply-line problems; most authors of the apocalypse genre only focus on the first few days, and don't write much about the economic, social and political problems afterward, which I found most interesting.
So yes, I enjoyed William Allen's first 3 books in the series, and am looking forward to reading his next one. I can recommend it to anyone with an interest in apocalyptic or disaster fiction.
I've read the first two books in this series, and I was only so-so about them. This book is a further letdown. I originally picked up the series because of the title and sub-heading, thinking it was mainly about preparing for a Great Apocalypse and surviving the aftermath. But those themes are really just a plot device to display great detail about paramilitary hardware, tactics, and extreme vigilantism. There isn't a real coherent overall logic, path, and structure to the series. The author admits that he planned a trilogy, but later needed to expand to four books. I can see why. This book doesn't propel the story forward very much. There are a LOT of writing mistakes (or poor editing) in this book. There's minimal weather impact shown, despite the title. Small changes in the Prepper and Homestead arrangements are presented. There is very little discussion of the science and world events due to the Apocalypse. 90% of this book deals with paramilitary offense and defense operations, with MUCH detail on tactics and weaponry. The main character continues to devolve into a Rambo-style invincible and omnipotent commando and unremorseful assassin. Great, if that's what you're looking for. Not for me. I'll skip the fourth book. Wish I'd skipped this one.
Mother Nature Eases off a bit but humanity redoubled its horror!
The icy cold has battened down the hatches early on but things have eased a bit on the flooding and other attendant natural disasters. However large scale, looting, hijacking, murders and torture take center stage as organized crime, gangs, and trained rogues band together in an organized effort to corral the few supplies still available. And, of course, let's not forget the inbound meteorites due to impact in the next 90+ days.... even as the ranks of the defenders are thinned... Drama, danger, and death.... Get your next book in the series NOW! A fantastic read!
Yet another in a long list of books that I’ll be following. I appreciate the new take on apoc fiction. Can’t wait to see how the Hardin family and friends hold up to the oncoming tribulations. I highly recommend this series.
I can't wait for the next one. Love the characters. They are well developed.. Action and realistic. However, there were several editing errors or misses, but it doesn't take away from the story.
There is a lot of detail in the story and sometimes it feels like it drags, but overall a good plot and characters. Enough to compel me to read all 3 books and look forward to the next.
Tensions mount as Bryan and his family/friends try to figure out who his behind the highway men that continue to take the lives of innocent people just trying to survive Rockfall. I am looking forward to the next book.
Post apocalyptic at its best. Great characters, incredible story. When the third book came out, I reread the first two books, and they were better the second time through. If you like Louis L'amour, this is your type of book.
I have enjoyed this series! I like that it's not about the main disaster, but the smaller issues that most people wouldn't even think about. Can't wait to read the next book!
Decent story line but needs a good editing review. Would like to catch more of the actual weather effects and more of the relationships rather than extreme details of clothing by every character. Yet I can appreciate details
This book kept me on the edge of my seat and reading well past my bedtime. I laughed and cried with this no. It held me captive until the very last word. Why an adventure! Now I need Book 4!
An excellent story. I truly enjoyed reading this series of books. It held my attention very well. I am looking forward for the fourth book. Hope it's coming h like soon!
The ugly “what if” realities play. But they don’t play “out.” Not yet. Reading this author’s way with his character’s thoughts and words somehow makes the troubling stuff tolerable.
I have been sucked into this series from the first chapter. The relationship between the brothers Byron and Mike remind me of the bantering between my brother and I.
