Title: Meanies (part of a series)
Author: Joy Cowley
Illustrator: Deirde Gardine
Date of Publication: 1983

Genre: Picture book, Fiction
Summary: In this classic silly book we meet the Meanies who have some very odd habits like drinking bath water and mud and sleeping in rubbish bins (trash cans)
Evaluative Commentary:The class I was observing this semester had this book in large format and you could tell from the worn out pages that this was a loved book. The teacher confirmed that she has been teaching this book for years and the students love its silly story and fun pictures. Lots of opportunity for interaction and an excellent choice for emergent readers and read aloud lesson. Great for language learners as there is lots of repetition in the text. Can be used for discussion story arc and character development.
Discussion Questions:
What do you remember about the Meanies? (before re-reading the text)
Who remembers what is a “rubbish bin”?
Do you know any one who reminds you of a Meanie? Why?
What was your favorite part of the book? Why?
What other books have we read by this author?
Is this a fiction or a non fiction book?
Do you know what a trickster is? (Discuss)
The meanies like to be tricksters, have you ever acted like a trickster? What did you do?
What did your parents do when you were acting like a trickster?

Extension activity:
Make a book with the title “Meanies visit me at my house” or/and “What meanies would do if they came to school?
Use chocolate pudding to make some muddy art!
Use finger paint to illustrate your own personal Meanie friend!
Write a recipe for meanie soup!
