Warning: This title contains explicit sex, adult language, sweet lovin’, multiple partners and ménage a trois.
Maya Banks is the #1 New York Times, #1 USA Today and international bestselling author of over 50 novels. A wife and mother of three, she lives in Texas.
Maya Banks is one of those authors I see all the time, but have never actually read until WILD. I really enjoyed her take on shapeshifters, which has always been one of my least favorite tropes in the paranormal genre.
The first story, “Golden Eyes”, is about Aliyah, who is a cheetah when she's not a woman. While in cheetah form in Africa, Aliyah is captured by poachers, who are bringing wild animals to the Rockies and then releasing them to be hunted. Duncan, the local sheriff, is out investigating sightings of a tiger and a lion when he comes across the injured cheetah, and rescues her from the poachers. I enjoyed the story, and the characters, especially Duncan. Their relationship built up pretty fast, and almost bordered on the fated mates trope, which I'm not crazy about. As per the warning on the synopsis, there was quite a bit of explicit sex, and I loved seeing how Duncan reacted to Aliyah, surprising himself with his own fierceness. In between the beddings, they track down and shut down the poaching ring and it all ends on a nice HEA.
“Amber Eyes” was very different. The heroine is Kaya, who is a cougar. She was mentioned in “Golden Eyes”, as she's Aliyah's sister, who disappeared when they were young children. Unknown to her family, she'd been captured, and eventually managed to escape, but by the time she found her way home her family had moved away, and she thought she'd been abandoned and was unwanted. She's been living on her own in the mountains, spending most of her time in animal form, since then. Hunter and Jericho live in a remote cabin, and are a bit of a mystery. They've loved and lost a woman together, but to honor her memory they carry on with their work, which they don't ever talk about, and all we know is they could be called away for an assignment at a moment's notice.
“Amber Eyes” had so much more actual story to it – there is no sex until at least the halfway point if I remember correctly. While Aliyah was cautious and wary lest her secret get out, Kaya is much more so. Having not lived among humans since she was a child, she's much more terrified of being discovered and put in a cage. She's drawn to the cabin, drawn to the two men, and has been watching them from a safe distance for a long time, unbeknownst to them. It isn't until she has an injured paw that she finally becomes brave enough to actually approach them.
With Kaya we get a lot of internal dialogue as she worries about being discovered, worries about surviving, worries about Hunter and Jericho knowing her secret, worries about whether or not they want her, especially Hunter who is more standoffish. In the beginning the two men were almost interchangeable for me, in that I had trouble keeping up with which one was which. I liked them both well enough, but not as much as I liked Duncan.
My heart broke for Kaya over and over, as her tragic past and angtsy feelings were revealed. I became much more vested in her story than I had with Aliyah. The pacing of the relationship between Kaya and the men was much slower than the one between Aliyah and Duncan. Hunter and Jericho have loved the same woman before, and while they shared her, it was never a smooth and comfortable relationship because she never truly trusted the relationship. They both want Kaya, but they're reluctant to go through that heartbreak again.
Lots of feels here. Eventually the men must leave for an assignment, and are gone much longer than anticipated. When they are all finally reunited, I teared up. Then Kaya and Aliyah are reunited, and I cried a bit. And then Kaya is finally reunited with her parents, and I blubbered like a baby. So much emotion packed into the last thirty pages or so!
“Golden Eyes” is an enjoyable, sexy story. “Amber Eyes” is a wonderful and touching and sweet character study. And Maya Banks has a new fan.
1. Sheriff Duncan keeps hearing about people seeing lions, tigers, cheetahs all his jurisdiction. He goes to check it out, finds poachers and then finds an injured cheetah. She's actually a shapeshifter and freaks him out at first. Eventually he finds out how she got there and they try to stop other animals from being killed.
2. Kaya has been living in the mountains for awhile after being caught and escaping from her home as a child. She's been watching these two men who come and go from a cabin near her. She's also a shapeshifter mountain lion, who is lonely. She meets the men both as the mountain lion and her human self.
I was a little worried that this might be erotica that's constant sex scenes but little story. I didn't need to worry. The author did a great job with the stories.
Golden Eyes was good but my favorite is Wild. I didn’t expect it to be my favorite since I don’t like ménage stories because it’s either instant love or the heroine is not interesting enough for me to watch her play ping pong with two men. This one felt more genuine and they found what they need and wanted in one another. And Kaya is so cute I really loved her.
Two novellas here. 2-1/2 stars for the first one and 4-1/2 for the second. Both of the stories were about female shifters (sisters) who are discovered by and fall in love with non shifter men. The shifter world is a bit different in that the type of animal you can shift into is determined by the Great Spirit while you are in the womb. So shifting is more a magical thing. Shifters are few and far between and are not an organized society.
The first novella was Golden Eyes Aliyah, a cheetah, has just escaped after having been capture by bad men who use exotic animals to stage illegal hunts. Duncan is the sheriff of the Colorado town nearby. He rescues what he thinks is an injured cheetah and gets a woman instead. They spend the book having sex and shutting down the bad guys' operation. The book is nice but kind of average. The sex scenes were very explicit, too racy in my opinion for where they were in their relationship. I don't really mind anal scenes if they're done right but not the second time you make love with a stranger on the second day you know him. Am I being bad by saying that this sort of thing says something about our heroine that sort of at least whispers of, oh I don't know, the S word maybe? Perhaps farther along in a relationship where it could illustrate trust would be better perhaps? So quick story with too quick emotional growth.
Second novella Amber Eyes is much better IMO. It is the story of Kaya, Aliyah's sister who was captured and taken away from her family when she was 4 as the captors thought she was an out of place cougar. She escapes in Colorado and has spent the last 20 years living mostly as a cougar in the mountains. She hangs around the cabin where Hunter and Jericho live between mercenary type jobs. She approaches them as a cougar when she's injured but changes into a woman after night in order to get food from their kitchen. They find her but don't realize she is the cougar. She is in and out of their cabin both as a cougar and a naked woman for a while before they figure it out. The author did a good job here showing her as a person who didn't really understand the human world and showing the confusion of the men as they dealt with this woman running around in the winter in the Colorado mountains naked. This was one of the better menages that I've read. The men had shared a woman before but that situation had not gone well and they were reluctant to do it again. Kaya, however, was so unused to human mores that she felt that having 2 mates to look out for her would be a fine thing and she felt no shame or what have you about it. Plus the issue of how others might feel about it was addressed. Also while the sex was certainly there, it was much more sweet and emotional than the first novella. The guys were very aware of how innocent she was and treated her with kid gloves. Lovely story.
this book had two novels in it. the first was Amber Eyes and the second was something i can't remember. even though i can't remember the second books title i really like it. it was a manage and a continuation of book one. both novels involved sisters that had been separated at a young age because poachers tried to kill they're family/people. they are shape-shifters. both sisters were ruffing it in the wild and came up on some men they fell in love with and in the end were reunited. there were some pretty good love scenes especially in bk2. i'm hoping there will be another anthology that continues the story.
This is a hard book to review, there were aspects of the story that I really like, the biggest one being the shifters in this book and just how they work in this world. But what really took away from the story was the characters. The women were so passive, not really taking control of anything other than the couple of times when they led in sex, which really surprised me. The story fell flat for me, and the sex at times seemed forced. It is too bad I felt like this because I had been really looking forward to this book.
Two stories, about two shifter women (long-lost sisters) finding the men of their lives. Which could make you go all “awwww” if it wasn’t for the fact both stories seriously lacked in plot, and compensated with sex.
In that aspect I can safely say it was very MayaBanks-y. A lot of sex (front and back, upward, downward, sideways etc.) and not much of anything else.
Notice the first sentence of this review...I didn’t feel it. I didn’t feel the love and affection, a lasting bond. It was just sex. Nothing more (and nothing less).
This wasn't one of my absolute favorites by Banks but it was still a good read and a great introduction into the world of shifters. This book contains the stories Golden Eyes and Amber Eyes. I have to say I did find myself liking Amber eyes some what better. One thing I didn't like though was that some events just seemed to happen too quickly; I would of liked them to be slowed down some and have more elaboration in parts. All in all, I enjoyed both stories though, and especially liked how the two stories were connected and finally came full circle.
So worth the wait. I feel like I've been waiting for this book for years. Ever since I read the synopsis for the Golden Eyes, I've wanted to read it.
Duncan and Aliyah are so hot!! And Kaya is one lucky girl to have Hunter AND Jericho! Plus their story has so much pain that you can't help but get a little teary and be impatient for the HEA.
I love that this is a completely unique take on shape shifters. Refreshing.
This book is a compilation of two novellas into one - I considered buying them both in ebook form, but decided that since they are related stories, I'd rather have them in book form.
And I'm glad I did!
An excellent read - for me, the first story is a bit stronger than the second, but that's my take. And I've been spoiled 'orribly by the Colter men, so...
Two very erotic stories about female cat shifters in the Rockies. Action moved slowly but I teared up at the end. My rating is 3.5* (Golden Eyes) Sheriff Duncan finds an injured cheetah and later discovers she is also a woman Aliyah. (Amber Eyes) A woman Kaya and a wounded cougar slowly befriend both Jericho and Hunter.
This really should be 3 1/2 stars. I loved a lot of the two novellas and other parts, not so much. The first novella was hard to get into, but when i did I enjoyed it. The second one started well and then seemed to be finished in a hurry. This book would have had a higher rating, but for the bits where suddenly kaya is left alone, pregnant, months pass and it gets a bit choppy
The first story was pretty good. The end seemed to wrap up to fast. I enjoyed the second story better. I liked the way the 2 stories tied together in the second story. I enjoyed the fact that the men in these stories were not over bearing to the point where they were too controlling. I like the tough guy that can also be the caring partner.
These stories were ok. The second one was better than the first, although I didn't get the feeling that either Jericho or Hunter was very thrilled with sharing Kaya. For a Samhain book, the stories weren't very erotic, and the shifter part was ok. Not a keeper.
2 related stories of cat shifters. Decent enough. Sex scenes were steamy. Think I just really wasn't in the mood for this one. I generally like Maya Banks, but this was just kinda ho-hum. Never really grabbed me and sucked me in.
I really enjoy most of Maya's books. I pick her books up without even reading the synopsis. I was not disappointed in this one. It was odd and rocky at parts, but was still a fun way to spend my Sunday afternoon.
