Marie F Crow believes that monsters should keep you up at night with the thoughts of “what if” stalking your mind. She began writing horror after feeling the genre of zombie horror was getting too far away from actual horror, forgetting what a zombie is, and what that can mean to your world.

The recent advents of movies and literature have pushed the concept of the flesh eating undead too far into the realm of the mundane and cute. There is a need to once more rehash the genre with the proper respect to the psychological ramifications, and sheer horror, that the monsters deserve.

That sheer horror of possibly having to kill your friends, family, or anyone else for that matter before they become a shambling corpse willing, even driven, to consume the flesh of their own. The psychological destruction to the minds of the living their deaths could cause to those around them.

With the release of The Risen series, she hopes to, once again, breathe fear back into the genre that has always been a favorite of hers. Crafting her stories with honest emotions, and believable circumstances, she creates her world with an added twist to the classic monsters. She believes nothing is sacred in the land of horror inviting the reader to explore the depth of that concept by luring them deeper into her realm with visual images and emotional drama wrapped with a sparkling, gore dripping bow.

With open arms, she welcomes them back into the world of horror hoping they enjoy the ride, but requests they do keep all their limbs inside the ride at all times. The Risen are waiting, and they are hungry.

I love the cover, that's why I bought this book.
The reviews are great so must be a great book.
Not for me, it was boring.

After reading about 105 pages I'd give up.
I've read the end part also, but in the middle only short parts.
It was all the same.

Long and boring.
It's just not for me.

I think if the book was shorter it would be better

This book came to me by way of a friend. It was described as zombies and Walking Dead with a kick butt female. Let’s do this!

This book was like a breath of fresh air. It’s unique and totally engaging. It also has a Walking Dead vibe to it and I was there for it. Yeah I went there but it’s true. The beginning hooked me. Once you read it, you’ll know what I’m talking about. Thank you Miss Crow! As the book progressed, I was more and more pulled and invested in the story. These characters had become my family. The author was able to make me feel so many things from sadness to anger then had me laughing. Ah good times.

This is the first book I’ve read by this author and certainly not the last. I’m officially a fangirl and I look forward to reading more! If you’re a fan of the Walking Dead and strong females that kick butt but also want something new and unique to read, this book is for YOU! You won’t be disappointed. I give this 5 stars

First things first, The Risen:Dawning should nit be mistaken for just another blood and guts zombie novel! If you're looking for straight up action with a minor in characterization and major in gore you'll want to go find anorher novel. Here instead we find ourselves in the midst of what I can only refer to as a haunting one of spirit, regret, love and loss. All of itvery, very real.

In Dawning we meet Helena (aka Hells) a woman long torn by family strife. Young and aloof she's had to maintain a shaky balance between the home in which she was born but unwelcome and her life at the biker bar with her much more accepting family, the members of G.R.I.T. At night she is happy and in the morning she must go home to care for her much younger siblings three blue eyed angels who hold higher value in her parents' affluent lives. Its a pattern, she's resigned to until the morning she comes home to a nightmare. Lost and full of regret she runs to the only isanctuary she knows and soon after embarks on a new like with J.D., Lawless, Aimes, Rhett, Marxx, Chapel and the open road.

Things aren't always easy. J.D. demands respect and there's always danger to be coped with in the aftermath of the Risen but Hells faces it with a strong spirit and a will that few are able to back down. For a long time its a battle to find a safe haven but after Hells takes one reckless leap of faith they find themselves the newest members of a gated community and reluctantly appointed protectors. Haubted by her loss and challenged by the life ahead of her Hells isn't what it is she wants but soon this new life will make her choose.

This book is full of haunting imagery, well established characters and a very interesting take on the zombie apocalypse when many of us hhorror fans have had our fill of them. I enjoyed this book because rather than focusing purely on the horror of the undead we are asked to consider the ways these events affect us, change the way we interact with each other and every aspect of the way we live. I'm also quite fond of this group of bikers, a smaller group with a hardcore way of life. Rather than falling back on the usual gory mess Crow offers us a literary horror novel with a more traditional and grounded approach which pays off very nicely.

I read this one impulsively after the author posted about it in a facebook group the other day and I'll be honest, I wasn't expecting too much. When you read as many zombie books as I do, it takes a lot for a book to stand out. But y'all, this book wrecked me emotionally. And I loved every minute of it. For me the book checks all the boxes. Great plot, gory but doesn't depend on that to carry the storyline, unique in a oversaturated genre - oh and did I mention the best part, a super alpha biker gang determined to protect their girls, and specifically our MC Helena, no matter the cost? Honestly the dynamic between the guys and Hells was slightly reminiscent of what you find in a reverse harem but there was none of that here, just a bunch of hot, brutish men in leather handling the situation in a zombie apocalypse. SoA meets TWD. .
.
Yes please.

I really liked this book. I read it for free using my Amazon prime membership but I plan to purchase it. I can't wait to read the next even though it looks to be more of a short story rather than a proper series book. I loved the characters and wanted to jump into the book just to help them out when things were bad. I also like the different twist to this story. Most of the zombie type books I have read will never find a true ending but the problems that these characters face gives you both the zombie awesomness as well as hope for the characters to find an end and get to rebuild their lives. I am not one to tell others readers everything about the book. those are spoilers in my opinion but I will recommend for anyone who likes zombie books.

As a major Walking Dead fan, I'm drawn to anything zombie related. The author sent me this for a review and the summary didn't tell much, so I didn't know what to expect. I believe that it was labeled for teens. I wouldn't necessarily let a YOUNG teen read it, as it is quite gruesome in parts, but I would let an older teen read it. I loved the gruesome, gross parts though! I mean, zombies are SUPPOSED to be scary! This was a great book that sincerely creeped me out in parts. I loved it and cannot wait to see more.

Edit--I apparently made up the teen part somehow. Regardless, this is great and it's a good read for any zombie or horror lovers! I felt like I was watching it all play out.

I wanted to like this. Loved the premise, the beginning had me on the edge of my seat and then...it just fizzled for me once they hit the bar and the rest of the characters were introduced. I kept reading in hopes it would grab me again; instead I began to hope a few of the main chapters would get caught by a zombie. Not a good sign. Others obviously liked it so maybe it just was not for me. (For the record: I am not a Twilight fan and don't watch TWD, just wanted a good zombie/apocalyptic thriller to read to hold me over until Part 3 of the Justin Cronin series comes out.). I am not writing off the whole series yet- going to give Book 2 a try.

Definitely want more Helena, Lawless and the whole G.R.I.T. MC! Can't wait to read the next book and find out what else is in store for their group. This is what a zombie book should be like. No one is safe and you never know what s behind the next door. Wow! Crow has made me fan for life with The Risen series.

While I am glad I read this novel, truth be told it was a too slow a pace for me. It is very well written; indeed, Ms Crow brings some true literary class, if you will, to the zombie apocalypse genre.

This book was not what expected! I received an ARC of this book and it did not disappoint!

I’ve read zombie apocalyptic books before where all the wrong characters die and their deaths don’t make any sense. Not the opening scene but the next that follows takes us to the beginning of the end...or is it?

This book was action packed, filled with sarcastic little people, one over protective sister and about a zillion zombies (not really but hey, I can have an imagination) or as Helena says they aren’t zombies.

I recommend this book to anyone that loves a good thriller/mystery zombie apocalypse. Great read! Patiently waiting for the next!!

The writing is poetic, emotional, & beautiful. My emotions ran the gauntlet, from laughing out loud to tears rolling down my cheeks. Unexpected responses and surprise events. Not at all what you expect from a horror. I couldn't put it down, fell in love with characters & felt what they felt. The way this book is constructed is truly poetic. Thoughts and descriptions are original and yet so real and understandable. Can't wait to read the rest of the series.

“Dawning is a well-developed intense tale that lays out one thrilling storyline and a gripping plot that is enthralling and unpredictable. I could not put it down, held captivated by the unique and well-defined characters. I highly recommend this read.

Grade: A+

I reviewed this book on my blog, Sunshine & Mountains Book Reviews

I don’t often give A+’s for book reviews, because honestly, it takes a lot for me to think a book couldn't be a teeny, tiny bit better. A’s are wonderful, well written, interesting books, but A+ means, it has no fault in my eyes.

The Risen: Dawning is an A+ book for me for numerous reasons.

Marie F. Crow has an outstanding writing talent and a unique voice to her novel. The introverted thoughts, along with the fabulous descriptive writing kept me tied into the story from the moment I started. I felt how the characters felt, I smelled what the characters were smelling. Marie has an unbelievable talent for involving all 5 senses into her writing that few authors today do.

Zombie novels are a dime a dozen, and it’s almost comical how many there are. We lost the innate fear that zombies have the power to create. But not in this book; this book harkens back to a George A Romero zombie movie, a classic. Not in the plot, but as a real horror story, giving us chills, and sticking with us. Filling our minds with the wonderfully created terror that oh so few authors have the ability to grasp. She gives us the gore that so often has been ignored. Zombie and gore go hand in hand, and I’m glad to see a author who truly understands that.

She manages to interweave horror, humor, and a bit of romance is a way that’s natural, progressive, and interesting. There’s nothing in this novel that hits you over the head, no cliché scenes. Marie takes the zombie novel and elevates it into a movie for the mind. Every detail is there, each description is alive, but not overly wordy.

The character development of Helena as a character was also exciting and painful all at the same time. She has to wipe away years of resentment in a single instant, making decisions based on gut. She’s a strongly written, well described character. She has heart, a bit of humor, and a multitude of thoughts that help us really get into her character and sink into the story.

I’ve seen the reviews on Amazon for this book, and if you do not enjoy original thoughts, wonderfully well written stories, with lush descriptions, then fine, don’t buy this novel. It’s your choice and we can respect that.

In my opinion, saying that this novel isn’t worth the 2.99 price is a travesty. Readers who want to see new things, to be brought into a whole new world, experience great writing that uses wonderful description can be assured The Risen: Dawning is a great choice. I honestly loved it, and thought that it was a fresh take on zombies with a unique and not unwelcome writing style. Some may say it’s wordy, but I think it’s perfect.

I plan to buy the paperback and hunt the author down to get it signed, because this belongs on my real bookshelf, not just my kindle shelf! :)

** I was honored to have been given a copy of this novel, to read, and review honestly. All opinions are my own. I stand behind my comments.

Article first published as eBook Review: ‘The Risen Dawning’ by Marie F. Crow on Blogcritics.

Before I dove into The Risen Dawning by Marie F. Crow, I have to admit I went to Amazon to check out what others were saying. Of course, like many reviews posted out there, there was a mix of good and bad. I never set my own expectations based on what others say but I wanted to see what people were saying.

Reviews come down to a matter of taste and writing style. Not everyone is professional when writing their reviews and not all of the reviewers out there are respectable. There were mentions online about how the romance was terrible and the chapters were wordy or didn’t get to the point right away. I have to respectfully disagree.

Now, I will say that the writing style is some form of dark poetry mixed with female sarcasm, a writing style similar to a disturbing sweetness. The main character, Helena Hawthorn, is living her dark life in the shadows of her siblings, never living up to the expectations of her family. Helena is never quite as good or worthy of her parents’ love or affection as her siblings.

This is a zombie horror story from a female perspective. While there are relationships and friendships tested, this is not, by any means, a romance novel. Those who dared to compare it to a romance novel truly give potential readers a misleading start.

I have not read but a couple of zombie books. I do not watch zombies on TV or follow the craze in the paranormal fantasy world. I consider this a good thing because that means I can give my overall best, offer the most open mind, without comparison to any other book or even compare to a best-seller.

So I can simply say Marie F. Crow really has taken my heart.

While some cannot appreciate the descriptive writing style, I have to say that it painted a perfect picture. Like a horror movie with soothing classical music in the background but then the sound becomes more intense in the right places and makes you jump or squirm because you didn’t expect what was coming next, right there on the pages in black and white.

That might sound crazy but what is the purpose of reading a book if you have to use your own imagination to guess what to see when the author lays it out perfectly that you visualize what they want you to see? The only reasonable comparison for the writing style is one of a dreamer. The Risen Dawning is similar to an exaggerated dreamer, clinging to details, leaving nothing behind. Refreshing to say the least.

Is The Risen Dawning different? Oh yes. Was I satisfied? No…I am left yearning for more! Would I recommend this book to females across the land? Yes, in a heartbeat! This is Marie’s first book in her series and she really has me as a fan. I am excited to read the next in this series.

If you are a zombie fan, then this book is for you! I gave this book 5 stars because it is wonderful. This book is well written and keeps you entertained. Once I started reading it, it was really hard to put down. You really get feel for what the characters are thinking and feeling. You can imagine what is going on down to what the characters facial expressions would look like if this book were real.

I really felt sorry for the characters in this book, especially winter time. The days are so much shorter in winter, so they had to spend a lot more time inside. The first chapter of this book really draws you in. This book definitely does not start off slow. I was thoroughly surprised by meeting a zombie in the first chapter. You must read this book to find out who the first zombie will be.

Such an amazing read. The writing is different but I love it. Helena is an awesome MC. I love her motorcycle gang and the familiar comraderie between them. J.D. is alpha and he's basically a father figure. Lawless is hott! He is Helena's love, her lighthouse. Chapel is like the preacher type, then theirs Marxx and there's Rhett the protector/security of the group. Aimes is Helen as bestie. They've all been together for years and are like a family. This story is so detailed and I felt like I was right there with the group experiencing everything as they we're. It was intense and had me on the edge of my seat biting my lip and nails. The zombies, or Risen as they call them, are not super fast but their huge amount of numbers is what is so dangerous. The ending was so horrid. Not in a bad way just so sad and heartbreaking! I can't wait to see what happens in the next books.

The Risen: Dawning is the first book in Marie F. Crow’s Zombie Apocalypse series, and it is a great start to a new series. This book contains just about everything a fan of this genre could want—scary zombies, a likable cast of characters, action, and my favorite part—trying to find some semblance of a normal life against the backdrop of a world turned upside down. Crow is a very talented writer who loves to take her time using language to create the most descriptive scene possible. Her writing is lush, highly nuanced, and extremely evocative. The detail and description reminded me a lot of Anne Rice although Crow’s style is very much her own. This is a great book for fans of zombie novels who want a different take on the genre.

'The Risen: Dawning' takes zombie books back to the way they were always meant to be; brutal and terrifying. Marie F Crow weaves a spine-chilling, detailed horror story of survival in a zombie Apocalypse. Enemies both living and dead are everywhere, and staying alive is a constant struggle that no one is spared from. There is a bit of a romance to be had in here as well, but like everything in this book, nothing is perfect and safe anymore.

This is a great book for zombie enthusiasts to check out, and anyone up for a thoroughly spooky horror story that nightmares are made of.

The Risen:Dawning...........talk about a cliffhanger!! Loved it. I don't generally read books about zombies but this one has a lot more than zombies to hold your attention. The author draws you into the story and makes you feel like you're a part of it. I found myself rooting for the heroine and the rest of the gang as they face horrific struggles in their everyday life. I am impatiently waiting for the next book in The Risen series.

I have just spent the past 24-36 hours immersed in the world of Marie F. Crow and I am astonished! I love this series! I can honestly say that it is by far one of my favorite series in the zombie genre, and trust me I have read plenty. As soon as I finished the first book, I went and purchased the other 3, because I HAD to know what was going to happen! Completely hooks you and drags you in!
I would recommend this series to anyone who is about the human side of things and not just the zombies!

From the first shiver to the last gasp, this book kept me mesmerized! The nightmare-inducing descriptions made me wish I could read with my hands over my eyes. The humor, love story and bits of mystery woven in made the characters seem so real. I fought along with them and was exhausted by the end, yet begging for more!
P.S. This book is NOT for the squeamish!
