This story line had great potential. Unfortunately I felt that some of the writing was juvenile in description. I also felt that the ending was brought on too fast without the sense of conclusion. I may attempt another story by this author as I did really like the plot.
A woman regains her speech and hearing, then she starts experiencing strange things and it all culminates on Halloween. Perfect book to read in the Fall. It'll creep you out and remind you to be careful what you wish for.
I loved this book. This was my first story by Sian Claven and now I want to dive into them ALL. I didnt know where this story was going to go until the end and thats what I love about good story tellers. Not being so predictable. I went back and forth on 4 stars and 5 stars only because of the ending seeming to feel alittle rushed. But that didnt diminish the fact that this story was really good and I couldnt stop reading it once I started. I can't wait to read more of this author's darkness.
Shh… by Sian Claven was a fun story pertaining to an experimental surgical operation. Heather is deaf and mute, and has a chance to gain those abilities back. However, there is always risk involved in any operation. Heather and Andrew have no idea what repercussions await them, their family, and lives.
The operation is a major success, but what at cost? When Heather begins hearing, seeing, and saying odd things she becomes worried. No one else seems to be seeing these hallucinations, or hearing them. Will Heather figure out her issue? Is she going crazy? Or is something more sinister to blame?
Shh… was a great story, but I did have a few complaints. The writing was improved drastically from #RIPJohn, but #RIPJohn felt more like a YA horror novella so it fits. I did feel like the characters could have used a little more fleshing out. I couldn’t picture many physical characteristics in my mind, or the environment either. I also felt some was predictable, but when things began to become exciting I felt the book ended a bit more abruptly than I would have liked.
All in all, I give Shh… by Sian Claven three and a half cochlear implants out of five vocal chords. Rounding up to four. My complaints as stated above is that I felt the characters needed a bit more depth, and description as far as characteristics. I also would have liked to see the finale drawn out a bit longer. It felt really rushed, and left me scratching my head. Not a bad book by any means, but I still think my favorite so far is Buried. I want to thank Sian for being the spotlighted author this month in Book Nerds, and I look forward to the live Q&A! Until next time, my friends.
Another fantastic read by Sian Claven. I believe the moral of this story is be careful of what you wish for. A horrific accident caused the loss of both hearing and sight but miraculously a surgery could restore all of that. But at what cost?
An experimental surgery gives Heather the ability to hear and speak again after many years. The consequences of the surgery are, at first, positive and amazing! Then, slow and seemingly inconsequential results begin to manifest. As time goes on, Heather begins to suffer sudden and debilitating sleep deprivation. Subtle things begin happening that make her question her sanity and the safety of her family.
Why is this happening to her and can she stop it before it changes her life in ways she never thought possible???
This book had a twisty ending that I loved! I also really enjoyed the subtle horror that keeps you on your toes. It spooks you, but also makes you wonder if the narrator is losing her mind, has a medical issue or whether something sinister is really going on!
So it was slow at first but I enjoyed the perspective that the main Character Heather was Mute and Deaf, not commonly brought up in books. The author really made it feel like I was seeing the sign language. The author eased into the problem but it was a great timeline, then sudden plot twist at the end. Great book and I can’t wait to read the next.
An absolute whirlwind of a psychological thriller with a nice finishing twist.
Heather is deaf and mute for 15 years. Following a miraculous procedure, she can now hear and speak again! But what happens when some of the words she says and hears aren't hers? Traumatic side effects from surgery or something far more sinister?
Take a deep dive into "Shh..." and experience the ride for yourself!
Imagine you can't hear or speak. Then your spouse signs you up for some experimental surgery.... Then all of a sudden, you can hear and speak. But then imagine this... you start hearing voices that aren't real. At times you can't control your tongue. So the surgery came with a price much higher than you could ever imagine. Overall, this story was great. This horror subgenre isn't my most fave, but the story sounded good and this is an author on the FB BOH list (my reading challenge of 2022 to read more Boh authors). I will say this. Kudos to the author for correctly conveying when someone was using sign language or speaking aloud. I could see where that could get complicated. For a novella, the story was well paced
Shh… is the fifth book/story I’ve read by Sian B. Claven and while this is a quick read, it was very entertaining. For the first half of the story, I was wondering if this story was a different genre than her normal genre, but suddenly the horror element raised its head ever so slowly until it was on full display. Once the horror element arrived, the pace of the story took off and never let up unit that last page. I can’t say this is my favorite of the five stories I’ve read by Ms. Claven, but it’s at least as good as the top three. If you need a story to fill some spare time – like waiting on an appointment, give Shh… a go, you may find yourself hoping the appointment drags on a bit.
