A Wartime Christmas by Kitty Danton is a charming and heartwarming historical fiction set during the Second World War. The story follows Sukie and Pattie, two young women from Devon who move to London to work at the Edwardes Hotel in Covent Garden. The novel beautifully captures the energy of wartime London and the bustling life of the hotel, while exploring how ordinary people found hope, friendship, and even joy during difficult times.
What stands out most is the sense of camaraderie and resilience. Sukie faces personal tragedy, but the support of her colleagues and the hotel community helps her navigate loss and hardship. The Christmas setting adds warmth to the story, highlighting small moments of kindness and celebration that felt authentic and heartfelt. Kitty Danton paints her characters with care, making their relationships feel real and relatable.
While the book is enjoyable, at times the plot felt a bit predictable, and some secondary characters could have been more developed. Despite these minor shortcomings, the novel succeeds in delivering a touching and uplifting story about friendship, love, and community. A Wartime Christmas is a delightful read for anyone who enjoys historical fiction with a cozy, festive twist.
It probably was alright if you like that sort of thing. A nice little story of life in the London Blitz in WW2. eminently predictable and somewhat inaccurate. i found it a slow read because it was not well written, I felt I had escaped into a fifties teenage book.
This book fell quite flat for me, I wanted another festive read to see me through to the Christmas period and although I loved the characters I just found it quite slow and I was skimming through a lot of the chapters hoping it would pick up and I’d get invested into the storyline and the characters lives but that just didn’t happen for me, I’m glad I picked it up but it wasn’t a book I’ll remember.
