Birth of Heavy Metal #1

He Was Not Prepared Lib/E

Rate this book

HE WAS NOT PREPARED.

Born from the fertile imagination of bestselling author Michael Anderle

Fountain of Youth, or Valley of Death?

While eating his supper of microwave popcorn, PhD student-genius Salinger Jacobs is grabbed from his apartment in California, stuck on a C-130 military plane and sent to the Sahara Desert to witness the reality of the ZOO for himself.

With the life expectancy of untrained scientists working inside the ZOO measured in hours, he has a lot to learn.

Fast.

First order of business?

How do you shoot a gun, and just  HOW MUCH   is that plant worth?

The government needs the best of the best military and scientific minds working out how to pull the secrets from the ZOO, while keeping the deadly fauna and flora in check.

There is one major problem, Salinger doesn't even have a PhD.

If he can stay alive long enough, he might be able to afford something besides packaged microwave popcorn to eat.

THAT IS A BIG IF.

NOTE:  There may or may not be gratuitous sex in this book. Or it might actually play into a later book with funny talk about men's vs. women's abilities and capabilities. There is ABSOLUTELY cursing in this book. LOTS of upset cursing, cursing out of anger, fear, and other emotional issues related to carnivorous alien flora or fauna eating humans who don’t say ‘darn.’ LOTS of gratuitous cursing just because the author finds it funny, too. There is death and sadness...and more death. In fact, it’s a blender of blood out in the ZOO. Man vs. Alien nature seems to justify ugly results. Plus, people have emotional hangups. Expect to smile, laugh, cry, and perhaps have a spate of jealousy or two. Further, there might be explicit sex, thank you sex, and you're welcome sex. Finally, there is no Coke in the ZOO.  That is probably the worst and most offensive trait in these stories. This is Michael Todd, and I approve of the shenanigans pulled in ZOO stories.

----

Join Salinger Jacobs as he learns about the ZOO, how to stay alive and the opportunities that being a part of the ZOO has brought him.

The future is looking interesting and humorous, except for the death part.

Well, there I was. Having just purchased Arcs 01-07 of the Bethany Anne series (A Christmas present to myself ... thank you for the fan pricing!!) When a little elf told me to go to the Zoo. The Zoo I say, surely not, it's raining and cold outside. So I typed in The Zoo and found a brand new series start-up from Mr. Todd. Yeah, I screamed!!! All the sugar plums started dancing, it stopped raining (no it didn't). I thought to myself ... well, it's Christmas and I have more time on my hands than anyone I know. So I picked up this book and thinking ahead, I put the books 2-3 on my wish list.

Imagine my wonder ... no really imagine it. This is another show-stopper by my favorite Author. I love the concept, the characters are truly characters, and even though it seemed a little slower than anything else by Todd that I've read. It is well worth it!! This is not a book that you can scan, it must be read. You will not be dis-satisfied.

One of the best books I've read in December. It started a bit slow/weird amd wasn't sure I would enjoy it. But it became a fantastic book, that takes part in a wonderfully created world with interesting characters

He Was not Prepared - a review by Rosemary Kenny

*slight spoilers*
The title says it all - nerdy PhD science graduate Salinger ('Sal') Jacobs is a typical slobby student munching on pizza and chilling out as usual, when his life is changed forever, in Michael Todd and Michael Anderle's great new series Birth of Heavy Metal, of which He Was Not Prepared is Book 1.

What Sal's not prepared for is being kidnapped to participate in a containment exercise, that could end life as we know it. With other scientists having participated in a Government experiment with alien biospheres they've been ordered to distribute in an area of the Sahara Desert, (hoping to provide a miracle answer to end world food shortages, cure cancer - maybe even baldness and the common cold?
The Triffid-like plant-life that results runs wild, infecting every life-form it encounters; a Wall built to try to contain the resulting mutants proves ineffective, leading to the research area known as The Zoo. As time runs out, can Sal and the others come up with an 'antidote' for the 'alien invasion' before it's too late?

Get your copy of Michael Anderle and Michael Todd's He Was Not Prepared to find out - then get ready for Book 2, wherein the adventure continues!

This book confuses me because I don't know what it is. Start with the words The Zoo on the cover. The book isn't called the Zoo and neither is the series named that so why?

Is it science fiction, harem fiction, or just fiction not that it matters I guess.

I liked the characters a lot and look forward to the next book. The premise is a bit weak. A government controlled area that is rampant with poachers but no one cares that there are poachers? If this were the real world the govt would want poachers killed.

Overall I liked it a good bit.

Well, this new series, for me, is certainly an attention grabber, especially in the introductory chapter!

It has a slightly different vibe to it than Apocalypse Paused, but I already like the characters, and expect to warm to them even more as the series goes on.

How do I know that?

Because half of the writing team is Michael Anderle, and I haven't read anything of his, yet, that hasn't had excellent characters, and blow your mind plot lines!

This book was no exception, and I found the development of Salinger Jacobs, from being a rather lazy, but extremely intelligent young Biologist, who was basically kidnapped into the job the government wanted him to do, who, through his experiences in the ZOO, turned into the kind of person that would be a great part of a team, inside the ZOO, to be a great example of this.

Even the lead female role, Sergeant Madigan Kennedy, was fully fleshed, and a very convincing female character.

What they both went through, in the ZOO, was as crazily bizarre as I've come to expect from it - although I noted that the ZOO denizens weren't quite as crazily mad as in Apocalypse Paused, and there was a little less gore than I'd got used to, in that series, very thankfully! Lol

All-in-all, this was a great start to this series, and I'm looking forwards to going on to Book Two: She Is His Witness, once I've managed some sleep because, as is usual with me, it's now 1:30am, and I know that, if I start reading it now, then I'll get no sleep at all!

So, after I've slept, and have read Book Two, I'll catch you on the flip side, to let you know what I think of this next session with the ZOO.

Brand New Concept

I've been reading "speculative fiction" for over 60 years. I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of times I've read a completely new concept, but this is one.
Geek, genius scientists that evolve into something greater? Been done.
Man eating plants? Can you say, "Little Shop of Horrors"?
Alien presence observed coming into Sol's space? (Hehe, yep) That goes way back.
Aliens shooting stuff at Earth? Sure.
Human researchers getting their hands on Alien biological specimens? OK
Discovering a substance from this Alien biological material that could cure cancer, diabetes, ischemic heart disease?
The preliminary results being so positively mind boggling that Earth's scientists risk deliberately introducing this substance to a closed environment on Earth? Maybe, well parts.
An environment (a jungle) that shows signs of intelligence? Again, some.
Animals that exhibit those same characteristics, across species, combined with the trees and grass and vines and etc.? None.
All those things previously mentioned combined in one book? Not even close!
Finally, add some sex as a part of the whole concept? For some less mature individuals, this book may require they put some effort into their reading . J.D. Salinger comes to mind.
The feel of this book is much like Bob Heinlien's "Stranger in a Strange Land" in that it "challenges you to think" (Heinlien).
The Michael's have written a great book with a universe populated with as many (or more) possibilities as that little movie, "Star Wars".
Nope, I wasn't paid. I didnt even get a free book.

Great book and great start to the series.

Wow I love the main character development and the different characters in the book. The story started out gradually but action and events went pretty fast. I was so involved in the story that I didn’t want to put the book down until I finish it. Now I’m disappointed that I have to wait for the next book. I can’t say enough about this book. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who love action, adventure, and a little sci-fiction thrown in. Especially with a main character that can adapt to the Zoo environment. Michael Todd (Michael Anderle) you did it again. Got me hooked on a new series. Still loved the first book I got hooked on from you, Bethany Anne. Of course not to mention all the other series that branch from this. Now I’m looking forward to this one too.

This would be a solid 3 if not for the lazily contrived set up at the start of the novel and the sex scenes. Don't get me wrong. I'm not a prude but... The sex scenes are between two characters that you get to know and are graphic in a way... That really doesn't serve the story at all. It's more likely to serve a voyeuristic kink. Not really my thing and definitely not what I picked this novel up for.

Well this was definitely a bit of a weird one. The story starts off well enough with a mysterious alien ship depositing an equally mysterious substance on earth. A substance that is not just biologically active but hyperactive. Obviously strange things are about to happen.

So far so good. Then enters our genius hero who actually is a fairly likable chap. He is briskly swept away by the men in black. National security and all that bla bla. Still on track but now it starts to get weird.

Now we get introduced to consultants, mercenaries and whatnot investigating the most important, and dangerous, scientific find ever. Just to mess things up even further poachers are roaming the site as well. Our hero is thrown straight into this without much of an explanation or training. Oh, forgot to mention that there are a shitload of mutant animals and plants as well. This not just unrealistic but bordering on the ludicrous. Come on, there should have been a regiment or two of soldiers protecting the site and professionals doing the research instead of these “entrepreneurs” paid based on how much “stuff” they bring back.

The entire story from there on is so weird and unbelievable that I’m seriously in doubt whether I will go for book two in the series.

The thing that saves the book from being a write off plain and simple is that I did like the hero as well as the soldier, an attractive and strong woman of course, that he pairs up with. I also really would like to see where the story goes and what happens with this strange substance.

Oh, by the way. Why is the text “The Zoo” plastered all over the cover when it is not in the title nor in the series name?

Good start

Good start to a series, it's not a serious piece of literature so let's not pretend that it's earth shattering. I enjoyed it, there is just enough character to maintain interest and its easy reading. Alien created resource, incompetent human handling, corporate greed and governmental meddling, there's nothing wrong with any of that for story!
This is a classic action adventure redolent of the gold rush era of the wild west, I can see great possibilities for better character definition and a modern take on an adult relationship that seems more real than most in this genre.

Jurasic Park meets Evolution (the movie)

Interesting plot, apthe main character is asmart, yet unmotivated ex-collage student who is forced onto an expedition/patrol in an area in the Sahara Desert where wild life has started evolving at a rapid pace due to scientists releasing space borne bacteria (goop).

Humans are rapdily bulding a wall to contain it, but while the wall is being built people are needed to explore the new jungle which has arisen in order to bring back specimens and curb the wild life.

Nothing about this ia stable

This was a very good book. I have no idea if it ties into the show the zoo, (possibly?), but since I only saw small pieces of that show, it really doesn't matter. The story is fantastic, and it's got all the things a scifi junky would want, aliens, hunting, explosions, guns, vicious animals, guns, explosions, (and did I mention guns?). Ok, so not all that many guns, but Mechs, even though they aren't called that, great stuff here folks, if you're a fan of alien invasion stories, you'll enjoy this one for sure.

Great fun

I give this book top marks because it kept me from getting anything done for the entirety of my reading. And that's not easy. The zoo is well built with plenty of room to grow. The main characters,Sal, a super genius but a gormless mess as a human being P is well drawn and compelling on his journey through the pages ,gradually becoming a decent sort with the help of a strong female soldier, Kennedy. Behind every successful man they say. Buy and read it . He will has three more in the works. Enjoy..

Fun start

So this is the intro to the Zoo. Fully half the book was one run into the zoo. This was to show what the zoo is and it's dangers. I don't completely understand where this is going but that is the point since this a collaborative universe for multiple authors. I felt the book was good but not great as lacked some flash or something. I did like the characters in this series so far but hope it is expanded in the next one. I expect more of everything monsters, abilities, change, and of course lust and love.

This book is a wild ride! Sal is living a quiet existence as a grad student who is brilliant (getting his Masters degree before he can vote) but not willing to play the game of kissing up to arrogant people in order to get his dissertation finished and actually get his PHD.

His life is turned upside down when he’s kidnapped by mysterious Men In Black and sent into the most dangerous, terrifying and hostile environment he ever thought possible. Amazing himself, he actually seems to come to terms with his new existence. But things are so very uncertain…

First book in the series, not so good.

I never thought that I would dislike a book that this particular author wrote, this is the first. I did not like the protagonist, I thought he was bland and not very interesting, no spark to his personality. Not even sure if I like the premise of this book. But I suggest everybody read it for themselves and gather their own opinions, don’t be sheep.

Looked like an Annihilation cheesy clone, but not at all.

Well, except for the weird mutating flora/fauna zone, but the rest of the book isn't up to Annihilation. It's a more basic mercenary hunters that go and harvest dangerous resources for moolah. The main character is ok, but the tone is still basic Anderle/Todd. Nothing very surprising overall, even if the rhythm is good.

The Zoo is apparently three concurrent series; I think I'll skip the other two unless this one picks up better.

New fresh meat for the Zoo

Salinger Jacobs is minding his own business as a starving intern when his world is turned upside down and he’s very rudely introduced to the Zoo. Nothing can prepare you for the Zoo, and Sal goes in with last minute, minimal information. Will he survive?

There are new creatures and plants, new people, and new threats to go with a high death count. Who will walk out of the Zoo to explore another day?

Awesome Series

Michael Anderle has been one of my favorite authors for a long time. While this hero isn't one of Michael Anderle's typical characters, I found him to be much more interesting because of the growth he goes through in the story. I like the nature of the new world and am impressed (as always) by the vivid details that bring this world to life! I'm looking forward to the next in this series.

Wow, this book is fantastic

An incredible and creative series start. Main characters are engaging and likeable. Action is almost nonstop. This is the authors best work and I have read dozens of his books. Even though I have kindle unlimited, I bought this one. Go Michael go!!!!

Looks like a great new series

Great characters and very interesting premise. Huge action in this one and some really cool creatures in the zoo. A little science and a little weirdness and imagination. Going to love this series. Not to mention that MA/MT can summon some badass female characters. Love Kennedy.

I looked, and saw a NEW universe descend . . .

5 stars just isn't enough for this one! I really like new worlds, with new characters to get to know. I see huge potential for where this one might go. A genius and a bad-ass, heavily armed and in a place with few rules. What could go wrong?

Book one

Mistakes found: I found two, but one of those was in the author's notes after the story.
Plot: Interesting concept. I did have a problem with the MC drinking water inside the zoo without testing it first. We will wait and see if it comes back to play a part later in the series.
Characters: they are well done and believable.

Not Prepared

This is a much better book than I expected. Prepared to slog through it, it quickly drew me in and I definitely enjoyed it. The characters are engaging and the plot is well defined. The premise of alien goop morphing into strange plants and animals grows to a detailed and entrancing environment. I want to know more about Sal and Kennedy and their odd relationship.

Everything I have come to expect and enjoy.

Ok, wasn't expecting the actual sex action. However, it was well controled and relevant to the story. As someone who has read many of your books, this is a great first book to follow into the blue goop. Thanks for letting me follow along.

Jurassic Park meets Aliens!

What would we do if aliens invaded our biosphere with a massively mutagenic terraforming agent?
Would we destroy it out right?
Or would corporate greed overrun common sense and allow doom.to befall us all?
Hint: go with corporate greed, it's the safe bet.

Interesting

I like books with a twist. On the other hand I feel like Amazon Unlimited drives authors to pad their books as they get paid by the number of pages read. So a grudging 3 for an interesting but padded plot. I passed on the sex scene as too often they are a precursor to the male protagonist thinking with his little head. We will see.

New series

Ok, I’m hooked.
Mike you’ve came up with another great storyline. The alien from space thing with you just gets better. The sex scene in the book was a surprise, and added a new twist to your persona as a writer. I enjoyed the book and will read all of them in the series.
