The Quest

Rate this book
TRUST WAS A JOURNEY OF THE HEART, AND IANA DUNCAN HAD LITTLE CAUSE TO TRAVEL THAT ROAD.

Victim of an abusive marriage, Iana vowed in her widowhood never again to put her fate in masculine hands. But one man, Henri Gillet, heir to the Trouville dynasty, had aroused her slumbering desires --- and endangered her deepest resolve.

Love, Henri Gillet pondered, was simple. Noble obligations were not. And now he faced a royal-size dilemma --- for though the Lady Iana had saved him from certain death, her shadowed past, so full of the darkest secrets, stood between them and threatened a future together! ...

Lyn's foray into book-length fiction began in the early '90s, and she signed her first contract with Harlequin Historicals on Valentine's Day, 1996. "Flowers, candy, kisses, and a book sale, too! There will never be another day quite like that one!" she says.

"I always loved to write and even got excited about doing reports and term papers. I neglected other homework just to make that short story for English class as riveting as I possibly could."

Even so, she never really considered writing as a career until much later. Instead, Lyn studied art and worked in Europe while she visited the places she now writes about in her historicals. At that time, she was painting those sights and selling pictures.

While working at Boeing as an illustrator, she had the idea of trying to freelance book covers. Since she liked to paint faces and figures, romance novels seemed a logical choice. However, the field of cover art is highly competitive and she discovered it would take a great deal of research and preparation.

While studying the market on covers, she became firmly hooked on the contents of the books and decided to try writing instead. "Definitely one of my better decisions," she admits. She is still an avid romance reader and manages to read an average of four per week in addition to one or two books outside the genre.

Lyn feels a special affinity for England and Scotland with their wonderful castles and intriguing history. The American South and Southwest are her favorite settings for contemporary adventures.

She and her husband, Allen, both natives of Georgia, live in North Alabama near their two children and four grandchildren. "The family contributes to my research," Lyn says.

"They buy me books, clip articles, sketch costumes, and sometimes act out scenes. Even the grandchildren serve as inspiration for the younger characters."

Iana saves Henri’s life and the two fall in love. The problem? Henri needs to marry someone suitable and Iana will not divulge who she is. Iana is opposed to marriage anyway. A widow who was married to an abusive husband, she is terrified of ending up in the same situation. Unfortunately, her brother wants her married.

I enjoyed this story although, at one point, Iana’s reluctance to marry Henri got tedious.

My favourite parts were Henri adopting his squire, Ev, and Iana adopting a foundling, Tam. Tam was in very rough shape when Iana found her. Henri was going to have her see a doctor in France. Although we know she is greatly improved, I would have liked to know what the doctor said. I would have also preferred more about Tam’s growing relationship with Henri than Iana’s constant reluctance to marry.

Her brother’s wife ends up in a convent out of the blue, and some explanation would have been appreciated.

This book was obviously written to express how women do not like being thought of as property. Iana was a forward thinking female for her time and did not belong. She refused to accept her "place" according to the men in her life. Henri is different than the men she is used to dealing with, but even he had to adjust to the fears Iana has about being controlled and hurt again.
It's true that not all women want the same thing in life and it can be hard to disagree with the societal norms. Iana was willing to brave everything that was thrown at her to gain control of her own fate. This is an important message to share. This story is worth reading at least once.

Typical medieval story. Man gets hurt. Companion finds woman to help them. They fall in love but she refuses him. Evetually, it turns out and they all live happily ever after. Not much excitment in there.

I finished it, but it as a chore -- it really dragged an nothing really happened. There was potential, but the author didn't expand into what could have been "the good stuff"
