This new Short History of Modern Ireland is concise, comprehensive and original in approach. It combines a strong narrative with explanation and interpretation. Locating Ireland within a European context throughout the period, it also stresses the influence of the Anglo-American world. Written in an accessible style, it assumes no previous knowledge of Irish history. It is, therefore, the perfect introduction to the subject for visitors to Ireland, and illuminating for Irish people themselves.
A very brief of account of Ireland from 1780s to early 2000s. Combines commentary and insight; barely a word wasted. A useful starting place. Would have benefited from a map and a bibliography of suggested further reading.
Covers 200 years in 122 pages, a good, quick overview of modern Ireland. Liked the color pictures but book also needed a map. Very nice to now have a broad overview of Irish history and politics.
