I'm a longtime fan of Disney Channel's productions...but, I was late to the party with High School Musical. I didn't even see the first telefilm in its entirety until nearly a decade after its release! Still, I made up for lost time by seeing the three movies, not to mention the dreadful spin-off flick Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure, which was a total slam against Amy Adams, but that's another story.
After watching the movies in their entirety, what was left? The books! Not the novelizations; the original series that serve as a sort of expanded universe. I read all of the ones my local library system had...but, I wanted more, so, I put in a special request, and, now, I'm one step closer to reading all of the books!
How was the book? Well, as a longtime devotee of the Mouse network, I'm probably biased, but...it was a cute story of how Troy, Gabriella, and friends take a trip to the Big Apple, where some big surprises await them. Reading it actually makes me want to take a trip to New York City.
this is an exciting book where you would want to read the whole book at one go.This story took placed in New York city.Troy,Gabriella,Chad,Taylor,Sharpay, and Ryan are heading to new york city on a class trip!Everyone is eager to bask in the lights of Times Square and explore the bustling streets of Manhattn. Then some unexpected opportunities arise:Sharpay and Ryan put on their dancing shoes and try out for a real Broadway musical, and Gabriella and Taylorvie fo scholarship money on a game show. But are any of them ready for the level of competition they'll face? And will their friendship survive the challenges ahead?.....& more.
I’m sorry but it was so bad. It felt like a messily written fanfiction, I half expected to it end up with some badly written smut. All the story lines were just sort of ‘meh’ and the pacing felt so off.
This one was a nice, easy, quick-read. I was engaged because the characters were nailed perfectly. They all acted just like I thought they would. Apart from Ryan, but we'll get to that...
I loved the basketball competition, the Sharpay vs. Anneclaire, and I loved how Ryan managed to realise that Anneclaire was similar to Sharpay.
The quiz master show was enthralling, and I'm glad Martha and Gabriella won. The last question was a great one. And I actually learned a few things here and there from the quiz alone.
One annoying thing was Ryan! Even though it is never specifically said in the films, or in any books, but I have always believed Ryan to be gay, because he is that sort of stereotypical character, and as soon as he became interested in a girl in this book, it practically knocked me sideways. I looked all over the internet and Disney has specifically said they have never had the opportunity to portray a gay character, as well as that, they don't want to influence children, which is fair enough, but quite a few children know from a young age what sexuality they are regardless of what is about them. I felt there was no need to turn Ryan straight in this book, and it practically infuriated me. If you can't let a character be true to himself, then how are the next generation supposed to be true to themselves. The character may well be straight, but I'm not the only one who thinks he isn't, and there's no need to flaunt a massive "I'm Straight" sign in front of us. I think it let the entire book and series down. He didn't need a love interest at all.
Overall I would normally stop reading these books, purely because of how infuriated I am with this one alone, all to do with Ryan. But I can let this slide, but only this once. I hope the next book brings something for me to enjoy more.
