The Chanler's summer home in Newport, RI was beautiful. It is now The Chanler hotel and restaurant. Their lives were a mess. Ten of them-- at least one could have remembered how their money got to them. Through their Mother, Margaret Astor Ward Chanler yes, but through hard work their ancestors made the money that this branch of the family spent it all or argued about it. I knew I would would finish the book anyway even not liking them . They were facinatingly odd!

Love all things Astor, Vanderbilt, guilted age! But is there a sequel ?? Or do I have to Google everyone to see what happened to them? I’ve read Archie and Amelie and have sitting here The Astor Orphan by Alexandra Aldrich to start next. Maybe she will shed light on how they lived. Can’t wait to read it!

I've read quite of few non-fiction books about the storied Astors & came across this intriguing book. The Astor, or should I say Astor Chanler orphans were quite a group. I enjoyed the book in that it held my interest. The author's writing style was good and he gave some interesting hi-lights of each family member.

The cover looked interesting, don't know why I picked it. I have no idea what it really is about, except that I believe it's nonfiction.

Enlightened chronicle of the Astor family at the turn of the 19th century.
